Last Wizard King's SSS-Level Magic system in Modern World-Chapter 37 - - Did you do it? - Part 1
Chapter 37: 37: Did you do it? - Part 1
Liam pulled his hood lower as he walked, the rain masking his movements. Relief washed over him as the fire faded into embers, but just as he was ready to slip away, a chill ran down his spine. Someone was watching him.
He forced himself to keep moving, his steps casual. Every fiber of his being screamed at him to look back, but he knew better. Acting unnaturally would only confirm any suspicions.
'Stay calm, Liam! Everything will be just fine'
He told himself.
Carefully, he glanced upward under the guise of avoiding a puddle. His breath caught for a moment when he spotted him—Elder Erin.
The elder stood near the edge of the crowd, his sharp eyes flicking between Liam and the rain still falling from the sky. His expression was unreadable, but his gaze lingered just a second too long on Liam.
'Damn it. Why is he here?'
Liam thought, fighting the urge to tense.
Elder Erin was one of the most powerful and well-respected magic users in the region. If anyone could sense what Liam had just done, it would be him.
[System Alert: User's unique magical signature has been masked. Probability of being found: 10%]
Well, it was not zero percent, and Liam felt nervous because of this.
Liam quickly dropped his gaze, pretending not to notice the elder. He adjusted his hood and continued walking, deliberately blending into the crowd. Each step felt heavier than the last as he resisted the urge to glance back.
The rain continued to pour, its rhythmic patter almost deafening in his ears.
'Act normal. You didn't see him. You're just another person heading home.'
Liam repeated to himself like a mantra.
Once he turned the corner and was out of sight, he let out a shaky breath. The presence watching him had faded, but the tension in his chest remained.
By the time Liam reached his small apartment, he was soaked through, but he didn't care. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it, his mind racing.
Elder Erin had been there. And he'd been watching.
'This is bad. Really bad.'
Liam quickly opened the door to his house and walked inside. But he was not alone in the living room.
Asger was waiting for him, the T.V.'s light illuminating the area around the living room. It was the middle of the day, but his house still felt dark and gloomy.
"Hey, human, you finally came back. Did you use your magic? I could feel it even from here. If you're going to waste your magic like this, then give it to me instead. I'd make good use of it."
The half-dragon complained as he turned around on the couch and changed channels.
One of the channels he skipped over was a news channel covering the fire and sudden rain. It piqued Liam's interest, but he didn't ask the half-dragon to change the channel.
He figured he'd just look up the news on the internet later since it would be faster.

"Oi, human, that old man left a message for you. He said he got called out because of a magical emergency that shouldn't be ignored. Something about a magical fire or something... I didn't bother to hear him out. He did leave your portion of the food in the kitchen."
The half-dragon seemed uninterested, and Liam quickly walked into the kitchen, reheated his food, and ate it.
He wasn't sure what would happen next, but one thing was clear—he'd defend his lie about not being able to use magic for as long as he could.
Liam finished eating in record time and quickly took a bath. By the time he was done, Elder Erin had returned. The elder sat in the living room with his arms crossed over his chest.
It was clear he was waiting for Liam.
"Excuse me, but do you want something from me?"
Liam asked, not beating around the bush as he sat down in front of the older man. He kept a confused expression on his face, trying to fool the magician.
But the elder had far more life experience than Liam and didn't fall for the act.
"Mister Sanders, I couldn't help but notice you at the site of the fire when I went there. Perhaps, there's something you'd like to tell me about yourself and what happened? Something about the origin of the fire, perhaps?"
The rank #3 magician asked in a calm voice.
It didn't sound like he was accusing Liam of anything, but it was clear this wasn't just casual conversation either. This was an interrogation.
[Magician Eryndorius Valtessar is trying to use the truth-binding spell on you. It has no effect on you due to the magic resistance.]
Liam blinked as he read the system's message. He had no idea what "magic resistance" meant, but he felt lucky that it protected him from Elder Erin's spell.
Elder Erin looked satisfied, seemingly unaware that his magic had failed.
"Mister Sanders, please answer my question. What do you know about that magical fire, and were you connected to it in any way?"
The elder's voice was heavy with authority, and Liam instantly lied.
"I have no idea what happened. I was in the area making a delivery for our shop when the fire broke out. I decided to help people, but once the rain started, I headed back since it was getting late."
Half of what Liam said was true, and his words made the elder frown.
It was clear Elder Erin didn't trust him, but without evidence, he couldn't accuse Liam of anything either.
Liam had gotten away with the perfect crime and no one knew about it. Even the older male looked frustrated, but Liam did not care.
[System Alert: Your magic signature has been perfectly masked. User's magic will not be discovered by anyone who has a lower level of magic.]
Liam sighed in relief at the message. He felt like he had gotten away with a lot this time.
