Chapter 24 - Madness or Defiance?

[Thunderclap Strike]

As I muttered the spell, my mana focused on the sharp edge of the estoc. The blade crackled with amethyst lightning like a serpent coiling around it, ready to burst forth into the metallic fur of the Ironhide bear. I swung my blade wide at the beast forming an amethyst arc in the air.

-Boooom!

As soon as my blade connected with its fur, a thundering sound echoed in the area. The iron hide bear reeled due to the sheer impact of the strike but the force was too much me—

I was sent flying a few steps back. I plunged the tip of my blade into the ground stopping the momentum of my before I collapsed on my knees.

"It's over," I muttered clutching the hilt of my blade. Sweat trickled down my forehead. The spell took every ounce of Mana because it was an expert-ranked spell. Almost two ranks higher than my own rank.

-Graaaaawrrrrrgh

My breath caught in my throat at the sound of a roar.

'No'

My eyes widened with shock and disbelief as I shifted my gaze towards the direction of the Ironhide bear that refused to die. Its battered body was covered in dirt and blood, the wound I gave him was just strong enough to neutralize his metallic hide—But still not enough to kill him.

My body was no longer in the condition to fight. I had used up all my mana which left me without any way to fend the beast off.

I was totally and utterly screwed.

"Fuck," I cursed as I met the eyes of the Beast before me. Its lava eyes looked at me with intense fury. This time, he won't just stop at killing me—No.

I was about to be ripped apart by him.

I shot a glance at my brother who was holding his hand out to block Alicia from helping me. His eyes were expectant as if he knew that I would survive and if I failed he was here—He could deal with it.

I stood up from the ground using my plunged blade for support, my body trembled from the exhaustion of Mana. My hands moved the blade upright in a ready stance—I was not going down without a fight.

The beast hurled towards me—Its movements slower than before but it did not matter. My whole body trembled and refused to move. The gleaming claws of the beast came into view which were aimed at my neck.

-Clang!

I barely raised my sword in time to block the claw but its sheer strength sent a jolt down my arms. My feet slid back and I fell on one knee. I gritted my teeth trying to push the beast back but it was futile as if I had been trying to push a heavy boulder.

The bear swiped again with its other claw.

-Screech!

I dodged—or I thought I did. Its claws dug deep into my flesh. Pain erupted in my chest as I fell on my back, my chest felt moist and warm. I looked down and saw crimson liquid oozing out of the wound.

[Noah!] Dante shouted as if to warn me about something.

-Slam!

But before I could process everything another strike sent me flying. My back hit something hard like a tree and my body slumped. I gasped out rugged breaths as my mouth tinkered with the taste of blood. The pain lingered around my chest and back. My vision blurred around the edges.

It was the same feeling all over again—The time when I was hit by that car, the time when I was beaten to a pulp by that shitty father. Those things were happening all over again. And here I was still powerless.

I said that I would Survive, Right? But it looks like I am powerless to do anything by myself.

I was dreaming Big—Stopping the demons and finding out about Azkarath. But it looks like I can't even defeat a fucking Greater Beast.

"Haha..." I chuckled looking at my pathetic wishes when I did not even have the power to defeat a Mana beast.

"You are a disappointment" Those words echoed in my head over and over again.

"Disgrace"

"Disappointment"

"Stain"

'Fuck them all. Those words do not define me.' My fists clenched.

'I swore to myself that would Survive.'

'I swore to myself that I would defy my fate—the fate to die protecting someone who did not care about me.'

'The fate that cursed me to live such a life. The fate that binds me to mortality.'

'I will sever that thread and live... free. That is my wish'

"Hahahahahahahahahaha" I let out a laugh—A single and long laugh. A fire erupted in my chest, cold and scorching all at once. It wasn't pain—it was clarity, a shattering of chains I hadn't even realized bound me. It burned with something—Something that was both cold and warm.

[Noah?] Dante echoed in my head with a hint of concern.

'Even if it meant sacrificing innocents I will do it. Even if it meant killing the Gods themselves. I will do it.'

I stood up from the ground. My entire body ached and demanded rest but I did not stop. The estoc I held before was nowhere near me. But my arms did not tremble, all my senses heightened and a black silvery light shrouded my arms, legs, everything.

It was an unstable energy that I was not able to control. Something out of my reach.

'What is this?'

[Your Aura] Dante said.

'My Aura? But—'

[I know what you are thinking. It is not refined and calm like the other knights] Dante sounded out my thoughts, [It is not because you've just awakened it. Your will is that of Madenning Defiance, not to protect]

[The defiance that lets you survive—That is your will]

"What?" I furrowed my brow.

[Don't think too much now and run]

'Wait, why?' I looked at the bear growling at me, 'Can't I just kill him with my Aura?'

[No, you don't even know how to control it yet] Dante reminded me of the unkind truth.

The truth is that I had just awakened Aura and had not yet gained control over it.

Fuck! I am still powerless.

But before I could run—the bear once again lunged at me but before he could reach me.

[Thorvian's Descent]

-Swish!

Amethyst lighting surged and created a thin line in the body of the bear. It was cleanly cut into half. Its intestines spilt out of its stomach as its lunging half stopped right at my feet.

I looked in the direction where the lightning faded.

"Brother Micheal," I muttered but my vision blurred. Pain surged throughout my whole body as the adrenaline had finally worn off, "You are late,"

My senses dulled and my body heaved forward as my vision darkened.
