Following Mona's pointing finger towards the computer screen, Luo An saw the expense record of a high-end restaurant.
"Four days after the sixth bank robbery, Erkin took his family for a feast at this Michelin-starred restaurant."
Mona's fingers moved slightly, and the surveillance video of the Michelin-starred restaurant lobby appeared on the screen. After adjusting slightly, the video of the Erkin family dining that evening appeared before them.
Clearly, this was a family celebration held because Erkin's daughter received a recommendation letter to attend university, during which Erkin even allowed his daughter Seren to drink a bit of wine.
The whole dining process was warm and harmonious, filled with joyful laughter.
After watching the surveillance footage, Luo An scratched his head beside the computer, and Mona shrugged, a hint of envy passing through her eyes, but spoke tonelessly:
Updated from freewёbnoνel.com.
"It's normal to celebrate something as important as the daughter getting into a university with a meal at such a restaurant."
Mona felt complicated, not sure if it was out of sympathy for the Erkin family's experiences or envy towards Seren.
"Let's go investigate the site."
Before the truth was investigated, Luo An would not say more.
Reesi had not returned yet, and Laid was lying in the hospital, so it was only Mona who went out with him this time.
Seeing Luo An equipped again with his combat suit, plate carrier vest, smoke grenades, stun grenades, two Glock 18s, and ten extended magazines, Mona held her forehead and sighed in exasperation.
She was now very certain that Luo An's sense of security was severely lacking.
——
The black SUV sped along the roads of New York and soon arrived at a laundry in Queens.
Ding-ding-ding—
Pushing open the door of the laundry, Luo An walked in with Mona.
Several machines in the laundry were busy, and one seemed to have some faults as a slender white woman kicked the machine, cursing softly while preparing to make a call.
"FBI!"
After entering the laundry, Luo An showed his FBI badge to the slender white woman and then asked,
"Where is the owner of this laundry?"
"I am!"
Seeing Luo An fully armed, the slender white woman, Zoe, twitched her mouth, stepped back nervously and asked:
"What are you looking for me for?"
"Are you the owner?"
The woman's words made Luo An frown:
"Isn't Erkin the owner of this shop?"
Hearing that Luo An was not looking for her, Zoe instantly relaxed, hands on her hips and eyebrows raised, she began loudly cursing Erkin:
"You're right, Agent, Sir. The previous owner of this shop was indeed Erkin. But two nights ago, he sold this laundry to me for a low price.
I've known Erkin for many years and thought he was honest, but I didn't expect that the laundry he sold me had so many problems with the machines; I've been repairing them since this morning..."
Hearing the woman's words, Luo An and Mona exchanged glances, sensing something wrong, and quickly interrupted:
"Erkin sold the shop to you two nights ago, why?"
"How would I know?"
Zoe curled her mouth, clearly displeased,
"Maybe because his daughter is going to a university in another state, so he's not planning to stay here."
Was he taking this opportunity to flee from New York?
Mona turned to Luo An, about to inquire, when Luo An's eyes shifted, he continued asking:
"What was Erkin's demeanor when he sold the shop to you? Was he in a hurry?"
Luo An had some other suspicions in mind.
Zoe shook her head, indicating she had a bakery at the end of this street and that when Erkin came to find her at her home the previous night, he didn't seem anxious; they haggled over the price for a long time before settling.
Hearing this, Luo An frowned, his thoughts dissipating.
"OK, thank you for your cooperation."
After asking a few more questions and gaining no other useful information, Luo An and Mona left the laundry without further ado.
Stepping on the gas, the SUV dashed out onto the road.
On the passenger side, Mona's fingers danced on the keyboard, her brows furrowed:
"No records found of the Erkin family purchasing tickets to leave New York, and no record at NYPD checkpoints around New York of the Erkin family's car leaving."
"So they should still be in New York."
Luo An nodded, he originally thought Erkin was under some coercion to sell the laundry shop quickly, but Zoe's description of Erkin did not seem coerced.
——
The SUV soon reached the community where the Erkin family lived, an old building.
Taking the elevator to the third floor, Luo An and Mona walked down the hallway to the Erkin family's door and began knocking.
Thump thump thump!
"Is anyone home?"
Luo An called out, but there was no response from the room.
Seeing this, Mona tilted her head, about to speak, when Luo An sniffed the air, his expression changed, and he quickly waved his hand, signaling Mona to hide to the side.
Both of them pulled out their weapons, exchanged a glance, and counted down from three. Luo An decisively kicked the door open and shouted loudly:
"FBI!"
Luo An and Mona held their guns with both hands, quickly checked every room in the house in a cautious posture, and after confirming that there was no one, they both said simultaneously:
"Clear!"
"Clear!"
They put their pistols back into their pockets and Luo An and Mona, with stern expressions, headed towards the living room.
The living room was small, just a television and a sofa.
But now, the left side of the yellow-brown sofa was stained black with dark red blood.
"What on earth happened here?"
Mona furrowed her brows, looked around, and noticed that although there were bloodstains in the living room, it didn't look messy and didn't seem like a murder had taken place.
Luo An also looked grave as he inspected the bedrooms in the house, finding the parents' and daughter's clothes neatly arranged and the beds clean.
However, the elderly couple's room was messy, obviously unattended, and the clothes inside the wardrobe were torn and scattered everywhere.
Walking into the kitchen, he opened the fridge and found no perishable food, only food that could be stored for a long time.
"It seems that Erkin was planning to go with his wife to drop off their daughter at college."
After a quick survey, Luo An returned to the living room, crossed his arms, frowned, and pondered:
"The elderly couple stayed to look after the house because it's inconvenient for them to go downstairs to shop, so Erkin left them plenty of food."
Hearing Luo An's analysis, Mona nodded but didn't say much. She reached the same conclusion after observing, but she was still puzzled about the blood on the sofa.
"I don't know."
Luo An shook his head. Upon seeing the blood, his first thought was to call the forensics team to check it.
But then he reconsidered, since he and Mona were on a covert operation, calling in the forensics team might not be appropriate.
"Let's check the surveillance footage of the surrounding roads from the car, see where Erkin's car has gone."
After a long silence, having searched the house several times and finding no clues, Luo An turned to Mona and said:
"I didn't see Erkin's car downstairs earlier; it was probably taken by the Erkin family."
"OK."
Mona nodded, stood up, and prepared to leave with Luo An.
Just as they were stepping out of the Erkin family's apartment, and Luo An was about to secure the door again, the elevator down the hall opened and two white youths walked out.
Seeing the fully-armed Luo An and Mona with the white FBI letters on their bulletproof vests, the two white youths paused, exchanged a glance, and walked quickly toward the nearby staircase.
Just as Luo An secured the door, he tilted his head and saw this scene. Without a sound, he took out his Glock 18, shielded Mona behind him, and shouted loudly:
"Guys, don't go yet..."
The next second, as the two white youths reached the stairwell door, they decisively drew guns and fired in the direction of Luo An and Mona without aiming.
Right when the two white youths reached into their jackets, Luo An's eyes flashed coldly. He forcefully pushed Mona back inside the Erkin family's home and fired his gun, hitting the back center of the left youth.
Bang!
Bang! Bang!
"Ah—"
"FU-K!"
Three gunshots rang out, and Luo An skillfully dodged sideways into the room unscathed.
One of the white youths screamed as he tumbled headfirst down the stairs, while the other cursed loudly as he hurriedly ran down the stairs, trying to help his companion and quickly flee.
"Luo An, are you alright?"
Mona, who had been pushed to the ground by Luo An, quickly got up, her face filled with concern. Luo An turned his head and smiled:
"I'm fine! Don't worry."
Luo An felt that, although his reaction speed at the moment of firing was not as swift as it had been in the basement, it was a bit quicker than before.
Thinking this, Luo An hesitated no more, decisively grabbed his Glock 18 in a combative stance, and rushed out.
Mona followed immediately, but she was shocked to see that even though she and Luo An left at almost the same time, Luo An had already reached the end of the corridor when she stepped out of the apartment.
"Shit!"
Mona cursed internally: "How is Luo An so fast?"
Unaware of Mona's thoughts, Luo An decisively threw a stun grenade toward the corner of the staircase as he reached it.
Boom!
The moment the stun grenade exploded, the two white youths were dazzled by a burst of white light, their ears in severe pain, their heads spinning.
Seeing this, Luo An's lips curved slightly upwards, raised his Glock 18 and aimed at the arms of the two white youths, firing without hesitation.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
"Ah—"
The arms of the two white youths were hit, their handguns instantly falling to the ground. They reflexively tried to pick them up, but Luo An was already incredulously close in front of them.
A gust of wind hit, and the two white youths took heavy blows to their faces, their nasal bones collapsing, falling backwards onto the ground.
As Mona rushed to the stairwell with her gun, Luo An had already handcuffed the two together.
Mona: "...FU-K!"
