Chapter 48: End of Trial one

{Now that’s wonderful.}

The Whisper spoke, pulling the attention of everyone. Their eyes lingered on it—fear, hope, desperation—everything could be felt.

{The trial one of a Hollowed Hero has come to an end.}

It said those words, and it sounded like some sort of lie. Everyone was stunned for a moment. Did they really survive? They couldn’t believe it. Death had been so near, and now they were free?

"Are you serious?" Jake asked, wanting to be sure that what he had just heard was real.

{The real goal of the first trial was to make as many people survive without killing the target. There were two ways to finish it without killing the target. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

The first way was to fight through all the waves—the hardest method—and the second way was to get everyone to agree with you.

The method that you used to make them agree with you didn’t matter. It could be through persuasion, through force, or any other method that you chose.

In the end, you used threats and power to force everyone to not come near the target. If you had done this right from the start, you could have avoided all the death.

A hero must sometimes become the necessary evil to ensure that others are saved.}

Jake heard Whisper’s words, and he could have ended everything right from the start if only he had used force and violence from the beginning.

{Congratulations, Chosen. You have completed the first trial. You survived with exactly 67 people. For that, you get a reward,} Whisper said, and two things appeared: a small black book.

Jake stretched out his hand to take the book, but then he recalled that Whisper had been saying Trial instead of Phase.

"You said the end of trial one?" Jake asked to be sure.

{Indeed, this was the first trial in all, the hollow hero. I only made you believe that there were more phases to scare and destabilize you.

The first trial is always the simplest trial, short and straight to the point. It is set that way to ease you into it.} The Whisper said and then flew away from Jake. {Keep your eye out, Trial two will come when you least expect it,} Whisper said and vanished before Jake could say anything more.

The entire Hall was still silent, nobody moved at all, everyone sat, either too broken to cry, or extremely relieved and happy that they had survived.

Jake immediately unsummoned Drake because he was crowding up the entire hall. He walked to the wall and leaned against it, sliding down to the ground.

He took a look at the book that Whisper gave to him, and as he was about to open it, he heard footsteps approach him. When he looked up, it was the girl that had been the target.

She went on her knees, head on the ground, bowing to Jake. Jake was shocked to see the scene. He tried to stop her, but she started speaking.

"Thank you, thank you for saving me and fighting for me. I would have died without doubt today. Thank you, thank you, thank you." She kept saying it, a puddle of tears formed under her head.

During the whole fight she had sat down watching, her face had been straight, but she experienced the worst type of fear to ever exist.

So now that it was finally over, she allowed the dams to flow and cried out her heart right there. She had never seen death so close until today.

"I didn’t do much in the way of saving you. All I wanted was to make sure no one touched you. If they had, all of us would have died.

There was no noble reason behind what I did. You could even say it was selfish to an extent. I killed hundreds in one day. There is no nobility in what I did here today," Jake said.

"There wasn’t supposed to be." Luscious walked up as well. He gave Jake a small bow. "I get to see my daughter today, and to me, that’s all that mattered. As far as I’m concerned, you were the perfect hollow hero." Luscious said and tapped Jake on the shoulder before walking away.

The man with the axe stood a small distance away. He nodded to Jake, hung his axe behind him and walked out of the guild, moving as if all this had not happened.

"Crypt, we should leave as well. All these tears of joy, happiness, and sadness can easily turn into anger. I’ve done enough killing for a very long time." Jake said and got up. Ophelia ran up to him and tightly held his hand.

Jake smiled at her. "I’m really sorry you had to watch all this," he said to her.

"In Lumerg, I watched my only friend get beaten to death by the guards of a drunk noble she tried to steal from.

Her name was Lilota. I never liked stealing, but she did, and when she was caught, the guards beat her to death while I watched, hidden.

Blood isn’t new to me, pain isn’t. If it wasn’t for you, I would still be living in pain," Ophelia said, and somehow she still wore a smile while saying all that.

’Just how bad was your life, Ophelia? You remind me of me,’ Jake thought.

He got to the door of the guild, looked inside for a bit, seeing the people that remained, not sure if he really saved the day like a hero would.

He pushed open the door and walked out, entering the streets. Immediately he stepped out, he saw the door to a large building swing open and a man ran out, only to burst into bloody mist.

"The same trial is happening all around?" Jake said in shock. He knew that it was happening, but seeing it now made it entirely different.

If this was happening everywhere, then the drop in the population of the entire world would be instant and heavy. Didn’t the trial know this?

’Or was this part of their plan? Use the trial to reduce the population?’ Jake thought.
