Chapter 127: 127. The Eye of Demon King

Rick slumped in his chair and gasped for air. His right eye felt like it was vibrating, and he couldn’t figure out why.

"HAH! HAH! HAH!" He starts breathing hard like someone who just lost their ability to breathe oxygen.

"WHAT THE FUCK IS HE THINKING WHILE DOING THIS TO ME!?" Rick screamed in his mind, full of frustration. "My fucking eye...!"

"My fucking eye hurts so fucking badly!!! It’s like getting stabbed nonstop, and the pain just gradually spread around my body!"

When he tried to open it, his vision was flooded with information. He could see magical auras, spiritual energy, and the flow of power through everything in the tent.

It was beautiful, scary, and too much to handle all at the same time. "T-The fuck...?"

"What... what did you..." Rick couldn’t put together full sentences.

Zork said, "The Eyes of the Demon King," as he casually used demon magic to heal his own empty socket.

"One of my own skills. That eye will let you see the truth behind lies, follow magical signatures, feel spiritual energy, and most importantly, it gives you a part of my demonic power."

"Think of it as insurance so you don’t die stupidly before you finish your mission to save this goddamn world."

"You... you gave me... your eye," Rick said.

Zork shrugged and said, "Well, I can always grow a new one."

"You can call them Demon King bonuses, but that eye is now yours for good."

"Use it well so that you can become stronger and be called a real man who conquers mature women!"

Rick tried to concentrate even though he was being bombarded with too many sounds and sights. It was challenging for him to understand what the demon eye showed him.

He could see Zork’s great power as a storm of red and black energy that swirled around. Zara’s aura was just as impressive: a controlled flame of battle-ready strength.

"I can see everything, but it still burns...! Fuck...! Like putting salt into the wound!"

Sebastian even looked different because his spiritual form was a complicated lattice of system codes.

Zork went on to say, "The eye has several key abilities," as if he were talking about a gift that would change your life forever instead of a transplant.

"Demon Sight lets you see all kinds of energy."

"True Vision sees through lies and illusions."

"Soul Gaze lets you see what someone is really like and how strong they are. And my favorite is Domination."

"Domination?" Rick said again, weakly.

Zork smiled. "Looking someone in the eye who has a weaker will than you can stop them in their tracks or even control what they do for a short time."

"I can’t count how many times it’s saved my life."

Rick felt his mind beginning to drift under the overwhelming stimuli. The brightness was blinding, the details were excessive, and everything seemed to be too much.

Zara moved quickly and pulled what looked like a leather eyepatch from her belt. She carefully positioned it over Rick’s right eye, immediately blocking all the overwhelming information.

The relief came right away. "There. Feeling better?"

"O-Ohh... yeah, a bit..."

Zara said softly, "You need to cover the eye until you learn how to control it."

"The power is huge, especially the Domination part. If you don’t use caution, it could hurt your friends or even you."

Rick slumped even more in his chair, his body shaking from the shock and the rush of power. He felt different, like something deep inside him had changed in a way he couldn’t quite explain.

The demon eye was now a part of him, and he could feel its power pulsing under the eyepatch, ready to be let loose.

"Oh wow... now I look like that one sensei from a ninja anime. I could just open this eye and say, EYES OF THE DEMON KING!"

"Heh... didn’t sound iconic at all."

[NEW ABILITY ACQUIRED: EYES OF THE DEMON KING]

[DEMON SIGHT: See all forms of magical and spiritual energy]

[TRUE VISION: Pierce illusions, deceptions, and false appearances]

[SOUL GAZE: Evaluate true power level and nature of any being]

[DOMINATION: Control weaker willed beings through direct eye contact]

[WARNING: Domination ability sealed by eyepatch. Remove only when necessary.]

Zork said, "You’re doing a good job."

"Most mortals would have passed out from the pain."

"You have more willpower than I thought."

Rick wanted to laugh so hard it hurt. "I didn’t look like I was handling it well, you know?"

"I screamed like I was going to die!"

"Yes, but you’re still alive," Zork said. "That’s the main thing!"

He clapped his hands together once more. "Now! I want to spar with you to celebrate this important event!"

Rick’s blood froze. "Spar? With you? The Demon King?"

"That’s right!" Zork’s smile was crazy. "I want to see how strong you are and what you’re made of with that new eye!"

"And more importantly," he said, his face becoming serious, "I want to officially give you the title of Demon King."

Rick felt like he had been hit by a physical blow. "WHAT?!"

Zork said, "You heard me."

"I can no longer be called the Demon King, just because I’ve been retired for a long time."

"The demon realm needs strong leaders right now, especially because of the corruption crisis."

"You’re getting closer to all Seven Major Powers and you are the Hero who will save the world."

"Who better to guide the demons into this new age?"

"I’m a HUMAN!" Rick said no. "Demons won’t follow a king from a human race!"

"They’ll follow the man who saved their general," Zork said in response. "The man who was brave enough to face death."

"The man who had my eye and earned my respect." He grabbed Rick’s arm and pulled him up. "Also, this isn’t a request!"

"Come on now, boy!"

"Everyone is waiting on the training grounds!"

"Everyone?! Ahh! Hell nah! Please wait!" Rick tried to fight it, but a force of nature was pulling him along.

"Of course! Someone must see a formal challenge for the throne!" Zork was already pulling him out of the tent and toward the main training area.

Rick saw Carmilla and Natasha in the crowd that was starting to form. He sent a desperate message through their bond.

"HELP! HE WANTS TO KILL ME IN A SPAR AND MAKE ME DEMON KING!"

Carmilla’s answer was very neutral: "Hmm... Don’t die...? Maybe...?"

"THAT’S NOT HELPING AT ALL!"

"I JUST EXPERIENCED THE DEEPEST PAIN OF ALL AND NOW THIS...!?"

"OH FUCK ME TILL DEATH RIGHT NOW!!!"

The training grounds were huge, big enough for a thousand demons to watch. And it looked like all of one thousand had come.

Demons stood around the edge, talking excitedly about the match that was about to happen. Rick saw Vyra in the crowd, which meant she must have come back from her mission.

She gave him a thumbs up, but it didn’t help his racing heart. "Even her...!? Yeah, I’m cooked... I’m so fucking cooked!"

Zork let Rick go in the middle of the arena and then walked to the other side. "Rules for sparring that are standard for the demon race."

"First blood, submission, or being knocked out wins!"

"This is crazy!" Rick called back. "You are a lot stronger than I am!"

"Then you’ll learn fast!" Zork laughed. "Don’t worry, I’ll hold back."

"Most likely!"

Rick was about to say more when he felt something strange. He felt a familiar yet distant pressure in his mind.

The bond with Sylvia, which had been quiet for days, suddenly came to life in a way that had never happened before.

"Rick!" Sylvia’s mental voice was scared, which was very different from how she usually sounded.

"I finally got past the corrupt interference!"

"Pay close attention...! There’s no time!"

"I’ve been keeping an eye on a huge corruption structure that’s heading your way!"

"It’s going faster than anything I’ve ever seen!"

"I’m trying to get in touch, but I’m still hours away with Liora! Get out of the demon camp right now!"

Rick’s blood froze. "Zork, hold on! We have to—"

Dark purple energy burst out of the sky above the arena. A huge corruption bolt, at least three times the size of the one the Corruption Titan had used, shot down from the sky at an impossible speed.

Despite wearing an eyepatch, Rick’s new demon eye was able to discern the true nature of the attack.

This wasn’t a coincidence. The attack was planned, aimed, and strong enough to destroy the whole demon camp.

And it was aimed right at Zork.

Time felt like it was going slower. Rick noticed that Zork’s eyes got bigger in surprise.

The Demon King was strong, but he had been relaxed, unprepared, and focused on sparring instead of defense. Even Zork couldn’t completely dodge at this distance.

Rick’s body moved before his brain could figure it out. His new speed from leveling up and the demonic power from the eye he got from a demon.

He was faster than he had ever been, but not fast enough to get to Zork before the attack hit.

"ZORK, GET OUT OF THE WAY!" Rick yelled.

The bolt of corruption hit.
