Limitless Evolution: I'm The New Dragon God?-Chapter 74: Retreat
Aurora dropped through the rooftop and stepped into the room, her boots landing softly on the bloodstained floor. Her eyes scanned the scene in silence.
The smell of iron hung thick in the air. The walls were scratched, the floor soaked in gore. She saw the broken body of Versalon, the trembling girl clutching her father’s unmoving arm, and the quiet fury building behind Ryuzen’s golden eyes.
Aurora exhaled a quiet sigh, her expression heavy.
"Another family torn apart," she murmured to herself. "How many more like this before it’s over?"
Even with all her talent as a healer, she couldn’t bring the dead back. No spell, no potion, no divine gift could undo what had been done.
On the other side of the room, Ryuzen stood frozen.
His mind replayed the last words Versalon had ever spoken to him.
‹ When I’m not around, I’ll have to rely on you to take care of them ›
At that time he had said it with a grin, laughing like it was just a lighthearted joke. As if death was still far away.
But that moment had come faster than any of them expected.
And now, those words were no longer a joke. They were a responsibility. A vow that now rested on Ryuzen’s shoulders.
So he crouched down in front of Venus, placing a firm hand on her trembling shoulder.
"Let’s go, Venus. We need to evacuate immediately."
Venus slowly lifted her head. Her teary brown eyes met his dirt-covered face.
Realizing who he was, she broke down into more sobs, clutching his chest.
"Ryu... sob... my father... he died protecting us... and I—I couldn’t do anything... sob!"
Ryuzen gently patted her back, feeling the raw anguish shaking her body. Her pain cut deeper than any blade.
Then Aurora’s sympathetic voice echoed,
"You take her away, Junior. I’ll handle the corpse and her mother," Aurora said softly from the side.
Ryuzen turned to her and nodded. He didn’t ask how she would manage it. But she was an S-Rank. She had her ways.
Gripping Venus’s bloodstained hand with his left, he led her out of the shattered home.
In his right hand, his blade gleamed with intent, slashing down obsidian-skinned creatures that blocked their path.
The ground began to rumble beneath their feet, each tremor heavier than the last.
"Rumble!"
Suddenly a massive rumble cracked through the darkness of night.
He snapped his head toward the source: towering city wall.
His draconic vision let him see through darkness and dusts clearly.
A section of the wall crumbled like an ancient mountain, collapsing into dust and debris. Stone and steel scattered through the dark, as the night fell deeper into chaos.
Venus, barely aware of her surroundings, clung to his arm like her life depended on it.
Behind them, Aurora hovered gracefully, supported by her floating staff. On either side of her, Versalon’s corpse and Evangeline’s unconscious body glided through the air, carried by an invisible force.
For an S-Rank Evolver, it was effortless.
But Aurora’s eyes widened the moment she turned toward the rumble echoing through the city.
She wasn’t just strong. She was gifted with extraordinary senses, far beyond even the elite.
Noticing the cause of that rumble, her pupils shrank.
"It’s a Beast Tide!" she shouted, her voice sharp with urgency. "Junior, quick! Get into one of those airships before it’s too late!"
Ryuzen glanced at the sky. Dozens of airships hovered like islands in the clouds, awaiting evacuees.
The earth beneath it cracked and roared as thousands of beasts rampaged through the shattered walls of the outer districts.
"But... we’re safe in the air, right?" he asked, his voice quieter, uncertain as he glanced toward the titan-class hollows.
Aurora’s reply was swift and reassuring,
"Do not worry. The Sky Guard will defend the fleets. Our people are already in position."
Whoosh!
Even before her words finished, she was soaring upward. Her white cloak fluttered violently behind her, and her hands glowed faintly with runic light.
Swoosh!
In the next breath, Ryuzen felt an invisible force surround him. His feet left the ground. Venus also rose beside him, her eyes half-closed in shock, still clinging to his hand.
Ashen wind rushed past their ears as they ascended above the carnage.
Ryuzen looked down to the chaos briefly, heart now calm as water. Buildings collapsed like brittle bones. The tide of monsters crashed through streets like an avalanche of nightmares. Roars and howls echoed across the city in waves.
He didn’t fight the force lifting him. He understood. Aurora wasn’t just helping. She was saving them.
As they rose higher, the air grew colder, thinner, cleaner. The chaos below faded into a distant, flickering storm. Aurora led the way like a comet, her staff glowing with faint green trails.
It was a desperate escape.
But it was not hopeless.
Not yet.
---
The massive flying vessel loomed ahead like a floating fortress, its bronze hull engraved with sigils that pulsed faintly with mana. Dozens of refugees were already being pulled aboard by rope ladders or evolvers guiding them through levitation. The winds howled louder at this height, and the sky was painted in streaks of red and black as fire and smoke climbed from the city below.
Aurora narrowed her eyes suddenly.
"Hold tight, Junior. We’re almost there."
But the sky had other plans.
From above the clouds, winged Hollows burst forth like monstrous crows descending on prey. Their jagged wings beat the air with ear-splitting screeches. Some had elongated serpent-like bodies with human faces twisted in agony. Others were bloated horrors, stitched with bone and shadow, their forms built for tearing and devouring.
Ryuzen immediately pulled Venus behind him as one of them dove toward them.
The obsidian creature’s fangs extended and claws reaching out like spears.
In a blur, he drew his blade and swung upward.
"Slash!"
The blade sliced through the creature’s chest, sending its corpse spiraling downward in a trail of black mist.
"Good job," Aurora said as she killed a few using her staff.
Afterward, they finally boarded the airship.
But the crisis isn’t over yet.
