Chapter 63: An Insane Offer

Team C and Liam sat together in the cafeteria, deep in discussion concerning Yaela’s abduction and who the possible culprits might be. The conversation had been going on for a few minutes, with various theories being thrown around.

"What about the Weeping Dragons?" Elaine suggested, leaning forward slightly. "After what you did to their President, this might be their way of getting back at you."

Liam shook his head, his expression confident. "I don’t think it’s them. I get the feeling that after what happened, they’ll know not to attempt that." He seemed rather sure that they wouldn’t want to escalate things just to get revenge for him beating up their faction president.

At this point, they had exhausted their list of possible culprits, and every person Liam might have gotten into an altercation with had been ruled out as a suspect. Amir, trying to keep spirits up, said encouragingly, "Don’t worry, we’ll keep the search up."

Liam nodded appreciatively and stood up from his seat. "I have to go now, guys. There’s some mission Grey’s putting me up for."

Sarah grinned mischievously. "Ooooh, finally being a true special agent!" Her tone was almost mocking, given that Liam, despite his special agent status, had only ever fought monsters and performed evacuations like the other field agents.

Amir smiled a little at the joke while Elaine nudged Sarah’s shoulder with hers before turning to Liam. "Good luck out there."

Liam nodded in acknowledgment. Suddenly, streaks of lightning coursed through his eyes and body, and then he disappeared in an instant, traveling through the electric systems of the facility as the overhead bulbs flickered.

Team C finally witnessed his ability being used in full, and they were all stunned, their eyes widening in amazement.

"Damn, that guy is just super cool," Sarah said, her voice filled with awe, while Elaine smiled, still processing what she had just witnessed.

...

Liam’s form materialized outside the facility, already floating midair, then flew higher into the sky and made swift strides toward his home through the air. A few minutes later, he arrived at his destination, but something was out of place.

Parked in front of his modest apartment were three black 2025 Toyota Camry sedans. Liam’s expression grew puzzled as he took in the unusual sight. However, within seconds of his arrival, visors began stepping out of the vehicles.

His confusion quickly turned to recognition and then anger. These were members of the Weeping Dragons faction, and their leader, Clive, was among them. Liam’s face immediately hardened into a frown, and his magical energy began pulsating slowly around him. freeweɓnovel~cѳm

"If you came back for Round 2, I promise you won’t leave here alive," Liam threatened, stretching out his fist toward Clive. The Weeping Dragons visors were visibly startled by the threat, taking instinctive steps backward.

But Clive, who still wore an arm sling strapped to his shoulders supporting his right arm and had an overhead bandage wrapped around his head, waved with his left arm in a peaceful gesture. "No, no, Mr. Liam, it’s none of that," he said as he walked cautiously toward Liam.

Liam’s energy levels had initially spiked, but seeing Clive’s non-threatening posture, he asked suspiciously, "What are you doing here? How do you know where I live?"

"You’re famous. All it takes is a little digging," Clive replied, though he tried not to sound disrespectful about it. Liam was lost in thought for a moment— First the family leader who took Yae, now this guy too knows where I live. I should probably move. Then he sighed with discontent.

Clive, immediately noticing Liam’s discomfort, quickly added, "We don’t mean any disrespect. It’s just that even USOV won’t let us have any of your contact information." Clive had made inquiries the previous week when he and Tim of the White Hunters had visited USOV after finally reaching an agreement on how the body parts of the beast they had fought over would be split.

"Why are you here?" Liam asked again, ignoring Clive’s previous explanation.

Clive straightened up slightly. "I came to extend an invitation to you—to join the Weeping Dragons as Vice President."

Liam scoffed and started making his way toward his house. "I’ll pass," he said dismissively. He had no interest in being part of any faction right now.

But Clive immediately turned toward Liam, who had just walked past him. "If it’s about pay, we can pay ten times what USOV is paying you. Heck, we’ll do three hundred thousand each week, and that’s as high as Selene’s salary."

Liam stopped in his tracks for a moment. To think someone would offer him that much money made him feel truly flattered. However, as he turned his head back toward Clive and was about to respond, Clive interjected quickly. "We’ll do four hundred thousand! That would make you the highest-paid visor in all of Michigan!" He raised four fingers toward Liam emphatically.

One of his men, who was bold enough to speak up, said hesitantly, "Boss..."

Clive immediately whirled around and yelled, "Shut up!" which made the visor retreat slowly. Clive definitely knew he was bidding too high, but he was confident that with Liam in their faction, they would be able to make much more money and enough to cover such an enormous salary.

Liam smiled again, genuinely flattered by the offer. Then, seeing that Clive wouldn’t be interrupting again, he finally said, "Like I said to the other eight factions before you, I’ll pass. Now get off my property." And with that, Liam continued on his way back into his house.

Clive’s mouth dropped open in shock as he did not expect anyone to refuse an offer like that. He sighed heavily and gestured for his men to get back in the vehicles, and one by one, the cars left Liam’s property.

...

"Damn..." Liam muttered as he entered his house. He would be lying if he said the offer wasn’t tempting. But, accepting would only be bad business for the faction in the long run. Income for factions was heavily dependent on selling body parts of different mythical creatures and the higher the level of monsters, the higher the income obtained through their sale.

However, Liam was a player who relied heavily on keeping monsters alive so that he could enter into summoning contracts with them. Though his recently acquired Nega-fusion skill reduced his reliance on summons being alive, he much preferred to have the numbers for what was slowly forming up to be his personal army.

He sighed, understanding that faction deals would have to wait, and then pulled out his device and scrolled through his contacts, stopping at one he had saved as "Detroit Housing Agent."

He was about to click it and make the call, but then a thought crossed his mind—Yaela might randomly come back one day. He clicked the phone’s power button, letting the screen go dark, and decided against calling the agent to resume his search for a new place to live.
