Chapter 43: Uncanny Sacrifice

Maybe Lilith would think he was better than this gigolo.

Only—he didn’t realize that the moment he dared to oppose Princess Lilith, a subtle shift had already taken place.

Her gaze, once amiable, had turned into something far more chilling, her eyes as cold and merciless as the heart of winter itself.

The entourage, waiting silently beside her, and even Lucien could feel her shift from miles away.

Only this fool, still fixated on Lucien, failed to realize what mistake he had made.

"Is that so? Then you better do your job seriously."

The shift in mood was subtle and fast, as Lilith suddenly smiled like a flower, encouraging Boros with a light laugh.

"Yes, Your Majesty. It is my duty to protect you from any harm. His Majesty will kill me if I let anything happen to you."

Boros thought the Third Princess understood his effort and hurriedly, reassuringly patted his giant chest.

Then, turning serious, he looked at Lucien as if ready to respond if he did anything untoward.

"Stupid!"

Lucien rolled his eyes and distanced himself a little. Who knew what stupid giant would do?

He didn’t want to get bitten by a dog for nothing.

"Let’s go. The Awakening Altar is only available while the class awakening is going on. We have to hurry."

Lilith put aside this small episode for now and suddenly waved her hand, motioning for them to follow.

Only then did Lucien see that the shimmering barrier in front of Lilith had opened like a gate, as her hand held some kind of key-like object.

As Lilith entered the barrier, her entourage swiftly followed, with Boros coming in after them. Lucien realized that, unlike the giant who was flailing around, Lilith’s entourage was quite silent.

All of them wore neutral expressions and rarely spoke. Unlike this idiot whose presence stuck out like a sore thumb, they were almost non-existent.

The inside of the barrier was no different than what he had seen before. Only looking at those lotus petals up close, Lucien felt a strange sensation.

"Boros, prepare the Awakening Altar."

Lilith was serious when it came to her own class awakening. So, she gave the order to Boros, then turned to look at Lucien.

"You can just stay near those circular nodes below the altar and wait. When the awakening begins, the spirit of the dungeon will silently convey the energy through that node."

Lilith pointed at the circular array beneath the altar, positioned directly in front of the Lotus that was rhythmically opening and closing its petals.

The gentle movement of the petals seemed almost like breathing, giving the entire place a mysterious, otherworldly atmosphere.

Lucien saw that there were a total of five such circular arrays, each one etched with intricate runes that faintly glowed in sync with the Lotus’s gentle movements.

Weirdly, it felt as though the entire altar was alive, pulsing with a quiet, hidden power.

"Yeah, your majesty. Don’t worry, I have already prepared everything. Just... be careful of this guy while I am busy."

Boros puffed up his chest, warned Lucien with a cold gaze, then left for the center.

As for the others, they simply stood quietly in the corners, arranged in a formation surrounding Princess Lilith.

"You have quite a... loyal dog as a subordinate," Lucien mocked Lilith, his eyes fixated on Boros.

He wasn’t going to sit in the place mentioned by Lilith just because she said so.

He hadn’t forgotten her attempt to kill him just before. If her really did that, what difference was there between him and a dog?

Instead, he was waiting to see what they were going to do. If he felt anything was dangerous, he was ready to fight.

"He isn’t my subordinate, but my brother’s, Second Prince Dorian’s."

Lilith didn’t mind his mockery but stood beside Lucien amiably as she explained. In fact, the reason why she didn’t control Boros completely like others was also because of this.

After saying that, Lilith looked at Lucien’s cautious look when she came near and giggled beautifully as if amused.

"You have learned to be cautious so fast."

Her blue eyes fixed on Lucien as if teasing him.

"Hmm?"

Lucien saw that she knew what he was thinking and shook his head,

"I had to. This world is too dangerous. Even beneath the beautiful flower, there can be hidden thorns. If I get distracted for a second, it could be the end."

Lucien muttered slowly and changed the topic as he didn’t want to get close to this girl.

"What is he doing?"

He asked, signaling at Boros, who carried a heavy bronze flagon etched with runes, a plain bone shard, and a glowing mana crystal.

He didn’t understand what he was doing at all with those unusual things.

"Sacrifice!"

Lilith answered and then placed her long nails on her chin as if thinking,

"Hey, Lucien. What do you think about this dungeon?"

She asked seemingly out of nowhere.

"Hmm? What do you mean?"

"I mean, what do you think a dungeon is? Why can it help us awaken a class?"

"How do I know? This is my first time entering here."

Lucien rolled his eyes and answered flatly, not intending to continue this useless discussion. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

It wasn’t like he didn’t have curiosity; he just didn’t think it was necessary for his current situation.

"Yeah, it’s your first time, right?"

Lilith didn’t mind, but instead nodded her head slowly as if realizing something, and mumbled,

"I heard you are talentless and your parents spend a fortune just to awaken your class."

She then looked at him and asked curiously,

"But... from what I saw, you are clearly not talentless, or even quite powerful. Why... are you hiding?"

She didn’t understand. If Lucien was capable of taking the test normally, there was no reason for the Goldveil family to sacrifice so much.

"What do you think?"

But she knew Lucien wasn’t going to tell her. Just by the smirk on his face, she could tell he was mocking her quietly.

Unfortunately, due to some strange, inexplicable reasons, she couldn’t bring herself to hate him.

"Tch... I thought if you told me, I’d tell you what my brother Dorian is planning for your Goldveil family."

Lilith tsked annoyingly and ignored Lucien after dropping the bomb.

"What do you mean?"

Sure enough, as soon as Lucien heard her words, he looked at her and asked instinctively, only to be ignored just like he had done to her before.

Only a faint smirk played on her devilish face, mimicking Lucien’s earlier expression.

’This demoness!’

Lucien couldn’t help but roll his eyes. However, Lilith’s mention of Dorian and his schemes made his mind race uncontrollably.

After all, his family was trying to leverage the Second Prince for safety.

’If he is the problem...’

Of course, Lucien didn’t fully trust Lilith’s words. He had already understood that this girl was cunning and not to be trusted easily.

"Your majesty, the spirit has accepted our offer. Haha... we can now start our class awakening."

Just when Lucien was musing over things, he heard Boros’ excited voice from the front.

’Blood?’

When he looked ahead, his eyes widened at the uncanny sight as Boros poured thick blood from the flagon onto the pure lotus petals.
