Special Chapter

Xiao Zhong

Mooo!!

The loud cry of a herd of cows echoed before the whole herd scattered in panic. Being just born two days ago, I was so startled that I didn’t know what to do. My mother had to call out and nudge me to follow her. Being the only cow with a calf, and because I was not yet quick on my feet, we became the target of a large predator.

A large, long-toothed predator with frightening stripes dashed towards me and my mother. I was so frightened that my legs shook. Instead of running away to save herself, my mother came back to nudge me to run together. We ran through the forest and thickets for a long time, and the beast continued to pursue us as if it was toying with its prey. Because if it really wanted to kill us, it wouldn’t have taken such a long chase.

Moo!

As we hid in the bushes, my mother told me to stay put, to lie down quietly, not to move, and not to breathe loudly. She told me she would come back for me before she ran off in another direction.

But she never returned...

I don’t know how long I lay there hiding. I missed my mother terribly, I was tired and hungry to the point of exhaustion. Then, a gray figure stopped in front of me. I looked up to see a strange creature with a round, white face looking down at me and asking,

“Little one, why are you here all alone? Where is your mother?”

That soft voice made me feel warm. Slowly, I got up and cuddled up to her, hoping she would take care of me. Because if I had stayed there any longer, I would soon succumb to hunger and die.

As if the little girl understood my need for help, she looped a vine around my neck and led me outside. Her gentle voice coaxed me along, pleading with her mother to take me home with them. After that, I became a part of the Tang family.

I didn’t understand why I, just a wild cow, could understand the human language. I could comprehend when the little girl teased or even scolded me. My life at the Tang residence was like being king of the cows.

Every day, all I did was eat and sleep. Sometimes, the little master would me out to run around and graze. But what I loved most was when she bathed me because my long and thick fur made me feel very warm. Whenever the little master said she’d bathe me, I willingly lay still and let her wash me thoroughly.

When I would go to sleep, I refused to be far from my round little master because I feared having to be alone again. However, the Tang family’s care made me trust and feel assured that as long as I was here, I would never feel lonely again. I lived a comfortable life without having to work, just playing and crying for milk.

On some random days, the humans would come to groom me, scratching my chin, making me feel utterly content as if I was the happiest cow in the world. As I grew older, I started to get bored of running because of my larger size and the constant hustle and bustle of humans around me, making me prefer to quietly graze under a big tree instead.

Often, the little master would come to lean against me or even lie on me and chatter away, but I could only listen since I couldn’t communicate back.

Sometimes she would tease me by calling me a fat cow or a lazy cow. All I could do in response was snort through my nose, which only made her more amused.

Even though I might have acted like I was annoyed at her, I never forget her kindness. She was the one who pulled me from the brink of death, giving me shelter and food, and caring for me as if I were a family member.

There was a time when she came to hug me and silently cried. Unable to comfort her with words, all I could do was lie still and let her hug me until she felt better, only swatting away the annoying insects for her.

I lived my days leisurely until one day, she brought a little white cow to me, saying that this cow would be my wife in the future. I glanced at the young cow before returning to my usual spot to lie down, uninterested. I wasn’t interested in the young cow; I was more interested in watching the chubby cow sister, who was the wife of my cow brother that the little master’s father had brought into the same barn as me.

The two of them liked to cuddle and chatter, and I even saw them mating. Honestly, as a young cow, I felt a burning jealousy, but I didn’t want to meddle too much with the cow sister for fear of her husband charging at me.

The little white cow always bothered me throughout the day, even when I. She talked so much that I got so annoyed, but then I remembered I used to be like her, so I didn’t scold her or show too much irritation. The happiest moment in my youth was when the little master took me to town.

I saw many chubby, beautiful cows, which excited the blood of a young cowl like me. However, being a wild cow different from them, they were initially scared and reluctant to get too close, though they did talk to me a bit. When I returned home, the little cow that used to bother me didn’t want to talk to me anymore, for reasons unknown.

As months passed, the little master didn’t have much free time to play with me anymore. Similarly, the little cow from those days grew into a beautiful, plump cow with long fur, so beautiful that I was dazzled. Remembering the little master’s words that Xiao Bai would be my wife in the future, I grinned to myself, thinking my time had come.

After that, I unleashed the vigorous blood of a young bull onto her, determined to give the little master about twenty calves!
