Rory Linden’s gaze swept across everyone in the private room before finally resting on Sean one last time as she smiled. "Miss Shaw, as you just heard, my mother was the Harrington family’s maid. To put it bluntly, I’m the maid’s daughter. It’s not appropriate for me to attend Young Master Harrison’s engagement party."

Lucy had always known about Miles Harrison and Rory Linden’s relationship.

She was also keenly aware that Miles hadn’t fully gotten over Rory.

After she moved into Miles’ villa, she wasn’t even allowed to enter the guest room where Rory had once stayed.

It didn’t matter why Sean Harrison urged them to get married so quickly, she would see it through.

An engagement wasn’t a marriage, after all.

If the Shaw family could use this engagement to get through their crisis, she could always break it off later.

And find a better man to marry.

Miles immediately retorted, "Rory, you’ve been with the Harrington family for so many years. To me, you’re practically family. I’ve never thought of you as a servant. I..."

"Yes, I know." Rory maintained a final shred of dignity. "I have to work on the day of the engagement party. So allow me to congratulate Young Master Harrison and Miss Shaw now. I wish you a lifetime of happiness, to grow old together, and to have children soon."

She took out her phone and transferred 6,000 yuan to Miles.

"I can’t be there in person, but my gift can do that. This six thousand yuan is my gift to the two of you. I know it’s not much, but I’m just an ordinary working person and I don’t earn a lot." Rory looked at Miles. "Young Master Harrison, please accept it."

Miles expression turned solemn. "You don’t have to, Rory. You don’t need to give us a gift."

"I insist. If it weren’t for the Harrington family, who knows what kind of miserable life I’d be living now." Rory resorted to goading him. "Or is it that you think s it’s too little? I can add some more."

"It’s not, it’s not."

Miles quickly pulled out his phone and accepted the transfer.

He knew all too well what Rory income was and how frugally she lived day to day.

She always seemed to be rotating through the same few outfits.

She never bought jewelry, her beautiful long hair simply tied back with a black hair elastic.

Even without any adornments, she was a beautiful and conspicuous presence in any crowd.

After watching Miles accept the money, Rory turned her phone toward Lucy and deleted his contact right in front of her.

Once that was done, Rory waved to everyone. "All right, I won’t keep you from your business. I’ll be going now."

It wasn’t until she was out of the private room that Rory felt a heavy weight in her chest.

After all...

For a few years, she had genuinely believed she would marry Miles Harrison.

But drawing a clear line like this now was also a relief, leaving her feeling unburdened.

She was just an ordinary person. This wasn’t her world, and she shouldn’t try to force her way in.

They were from different social classes.

She shouldn’t have dreamed of marrying up.

Rory had just reached the hotel entrance when a man in a suit ran over and stopped her.

"Miss Linden, hello. I’m President Harrison’s driver. He asked me to have you wait in the car for a moment. He’ll be right down and will then see you home."

The man introduced himself first, then stated his purpose.

Rory had taken Sean’s car before and remembered his driver. He was the indeed who he said he was.

"All right."

Rory guessed that Sean must have something to say to her.

In that case, she might as well make her own position clear.

She would tell him in no uncertain terms that she had no intention of clinging to Miles.

Sitting in the back of the luxury car, the first thing Rory did was pull out her phone to check her bank balance.

That was impulsive.

Agh.

After giving away that six thousand yuan for the gift, she only had 2,700 yuan left—and that wasn’t even counting the additional fifty thousand she’d borrowed from Sherry.

It might seem like a lot of money, but she needed to rent a place soon...

Even with just a one-month deposit and the first month’s rent, it would be difficult to find a decent place with this amount of money.

Just as Rory was feeling miserable, the door beside her opened.

Sean ducked down and sat inside.

He sat down right next to her.

The interior of the luxury car was considerably more spacious than an ordinary one, but perhaps because the man was so tall, his presence seemed to naturally encroach upon her space the moment he sat down.

His long legs, though not deliberately spread apart, were already brushing against hers.

In the enclosed space, the scent of alcohol on him became particularly noticeable.

"Was the food good?"

The man’s first words upon entering the car were about her.

"Yes, the food here was delicious." Rory put her phone away and looked out the window. "You’re quite observant, Mr. Harrison. Very few people actually know that I like spicy food. Not just back when I was in school with Young Master Harrison, but even later in college and at the hospital, I rarely ordered spicy dishes. I’m surprised you noticed."

Sean tilted his head slightly to look at the woman beside him.

The sun had set, and the city lights were beginning to glow.

The city’s lights streamed through the window as the car moved.

Light and shadow played silently across the woman’s perfect profile, hiding her emotions.

Sean watched her. "What? Are you unhappy that I’m pushing for Miles and Miss Shaw to get engaged as soon as possible?"

"I’m not unhappy."

Rory turned her head back to him.

Even though she saw him looking at her, she met his gaze without fear, her eyes sincere and unwavering. "Mr. Harrison, when my mother had her accident, the Harrington family paid two million yuan in compensation. Even though I never received that money, the debt the Harringtons owed me—owed my family—was cleared. I’ve always been grateful to the Harrington family for taking me in. That’s why I used to think that if Miles liked me and was willing to marry me, I would marry him."

"Okay."

Sean hummed in response, indicating that he was listening.

"I won’t deny it, I did like Young Master Harrison during that time, and I thought he liked me, too. But the night I saved you, things happened that made me realize that in his eyes, I wasn’t a girlfriend, or even the nanny’s daughter. I was just a new nanny to take care of him."

Rory took a deep breath and continued, "I know the Harrington family has been very good to me, but I am a living, breathing person. I can’t marry a man who doesn’t love or respect me just to repay that kindness. I can’t throw away the rest of my life like that."

"Miles is the only grandson of his generation. He was spoiled by the family and doesn’t really know how to love someone."

Rory had to agree with that statement.

Miles took everything he had for granted.

He seemed to think he could do whatever he wanted without consequence.

Rory forced a smile. "Mr. Harrison, I’m fully aware that the reason my mother came to work as a nanny for your family is because we come from two different worlds. Your company earns more in a single day than my family could in a lifetime. I have never had the unrealistic dream of marrying up to cross the class divide. As soon as your mother is discharged from the hospital, I will move out of the Harrington family home."

’It was time,’ she thought, ’to make a clean break from the Harrington family.’

"Mm, all right." Sean nodded, then asked, "In that case, let’s go back to the first question. How did I know you like spicy food."

Rory cocked her head, confused as to why he was bringing that up again.

A faint smile touched Sean lips. "Have you ever considered the possibility, Dr. Linden, that you told me yourself?"
