Chapter 448: Chapter 260: I Like You_3

“If they’re not charging you a day rate, why don’t you wait until ten tomorrow before you call me?”

“Fuck!” Xu Qingyan cursed, not even thinking before hanging up the phone, “I don’t believe I can’t open this lock. There’s no deadbolt, just need a hand.”

He bumped against the door, estimating the gap. He went downstairs to a 24-hour convenience store to buy a plastic board with some rigidity, similar to the boards used during exams.

He borrowed a pair of scissors from the store owner and trimmed the shape a bit before heading back upstairs.

The plastic board was slid into the gap of the door, fidgeting in the direction of the lock. Half a minute later, there was a click as the door lock was pushed open by the plastic board, and a smile involuntarily spread across his face.

He woke up.

Xu Qingyan felt like he had only slept for ten minutes but when he looked at his phone, he had actually rested for three hours. Struggling to get up, he realized that it had already been the first day of the New Year.

Oh, right, going home.

The Spring Festival Gala had already concluded last night.

He just hadn’t expected the three big shots to be able to drink so much; they continued until five in the morning before dispersing. Xu Qingyan was busy pouring drinks, but he himself hadn’t drunk much.

After chatting all night and coming up with nothing, Xu Qingyan felt utterly bored.

“Fuck, if I drink with Director Ji again, I’m an idiot!”

After a quick shower, he drove to pick up Pei Muchan, having agreed to take her to the airport.

The car belonged to Gan Wenchang, or more precisely, his friend. However, Gan Wenchang wasn’t leaving anytime soon and would have to stay with the director’s team in Xinghai for a few more days.

Upon reaching the hotel, he called and got in touch with Pei Muchan first.

Pei Muchan religiously went to sleep at eleven o’clock every day, which had almost become a habit ingrained in her DNA, as she would say, for the sake of beauty sleep.

Xu Qingyan thought it was quite good; it seemed the closer women got to thirty, the less clingy they became.

However, Pei Muchan was clearly a good way off from turning thirty, needing at least another three or four years. By the time she turned thirty, Xu Qingyan himself would be almost there.

After hanging up the phone, he went upstairs to pick her up.

Just passing through the corridor, he coincidentally ran into Pei Muchan coming out.

The elegant woman wore a mask and was pulling a 21-inch white suitcase, dressed in a khaki Korean-style coat, with a pair of beautiful eyes visible.

Just by looking at her eyes, it was evident that her beauty sleep had been successful, and she must have had a good night’s rest.

From Pei Muchan’s perspective, she had a disagreement with her family and went out to clear her mind. She took a plane to Xinghai and after watching a live Spring Festival Gala, she was heading back.

It was like a short trip, pretty much like going downstairs to relax.

“Why do you look so pale?” Pei Muchan eyed him, her gaze sweeping over him, “Were you busy until late last night? How long did you sleep?”

“Don’t even mention it, I was called by three big bosses to drink, and ended up pouring drinks for them all night.” Xu Qingyan waved his hand, “It broke up at five, slept for two… three hours, I guess.”

“Then you should rest, I can hail a taxi to the airport.” Pei Muchan looked at him steadily.

“It’s no trouble, I’ve come all this way for the New Year. Besides, I’m not sleepy, the trip isn’t far, and I have a late flight so I can rest a lot then.” He used one of his eight great bluffing techniques.

“Okay.”

Xu Qingyan took the luggage from Pei Muchan’s hands and the two chatted as they went downstairs.

“How was the Spring Festival Gala last night?”

“Pretty good.” She said softly.

“Good how?” Xu Qingyan chuckled, watching the elevator numbers gradually change, “The Spring Festival Gala is like a big feast, one that on a grand scale embodies inclusiveness and showcases national spirit.”

“On a smaller scale, it has all flavors: sour, sweet, bitter, spicy, salty. It’s impossible for anyone to like all the acts of the Spring Festival Gala.”

“Your show was pretty good, but that rap segment was kind of confusing,” Pei Muchan said as she looked down, speaking her mind, “A thousand people chanting poems… it just didn’t resonate with me.”

“That’s about right,” Xu Qingyan grinned, showing not the slightest bit of unhappiness, “Actually, I didn’t get it either, and reading poetry didn’t do much for me. But there’s always someone who likes it.”

“If every person can find a segment they like in those seven minutes, to some extent, the program can be considered a success.”

“I don’t get it,” Pei Muchan followed him and walked out.

“Not getting it is just right. The day we start to understand, that would be enlightenment. But it’s better to stay confused,” Xu Qingyan laughed, “This thing is more about politics than entertainment. A show that’s put forth must be upright and have a purpose. It can’t be too common, nor too dull.”

“Us ordinary people just want to have some fun at the Spring Festival Gala. Really, trying to rack our brains to understand what’s so great about it is the most painful thing.”

The sky looked overcast, as if it might snow.

Watching him talk non-stop while dragging his suitcase, Pei Muchan couldn’t help but ponder and glance at him, then asked.

“Have you become more talkative?”

“Because my mind is a bit muddled right now, I don’t know what to say,” Xu Qingyan suddenly stopped, turned around to look at her, and the sound of the dragging suitcase instantly disappeared.

There weren’t many people outside the hotel, and the surroundings immediately quieted down.

“Why?” she asked, slightly surprised.

Xu Qingyan looked at her, his gaze slightly lowered, as if he was organizing his thoughts.

“Because I’ve been busy the whole New Year, and now everything is over. Suddenly I realize you are going back for the New Year, and so am I, and I find it hard to let go.”

When the words “hard to let go” came out, Pei Muchan couldn’t help but lower her head, and her heart skipped a beat.

“But… weren’t you quite decisive when you left?”

“When was that?”

“End of October,” she said.

“End of October… uh, I was hot-headed then,” Xu Qingyan turned his head away, “Being part of the Spring Festival Gala, an opportunity that brings honor to the ancestors, is hard to refuse.”

“Yeah, you definitely should have gone,” Pei Muchan had the upper hand now.

As she pondered what to say next, she heard Xu Qingyan add, “I actually don’t regret it either. If I had stayed in Xinghai, you probably wouldn’t want to write your own songs.”

At these words, Pei Muchan was furious.

“I!! Can!! Write songs on my own!”

“Ha, just a joke, don’t get so mad,” Xu Qingyan kept dragging her suitcase forward, reached the parking lot, and quickly put it in the trunk.

The highway to the airport.

Listeing to the GPS, he continued.

“I should be able to rest for a while after the New Year, perfect timing to oversee your album.”

“I don’t need your help, I can handle it on my own,” Pei Muchan was a little petty, still remembering the words from earlier, “Besides, don’t you have a script to work on?”

“I can manage.”

“Why do you have to wear yourself out?” Pei Muchan looked down, speaking earnestly word by word, “You can take your time, and I can do many things too.”

“I can manage, and I want to,” Xu Qingyan drove without turning his head, holding the steering wheel with one hand, his eyes bright, “Because…”

“I like you.”
