Chapter 40: A Fun Lived Day.

The next day started bright and sunny with Leo waking on the chair, somehow by some miracle he had actually fallen asleep.

The familiar chime of his daily objectives and rewards for the previous day sounded almost immediately.

That morning Leo’s eyes started out the window with solemn grace, he almost felt like crying. The joy of waking a day without having to deal with the thought of fighting a beast that could end overwhelmed him.

That thought itself seemed like a taboo in the hellish landscape of Hellscape. Looking out of his window he saw the sun shining gracefully on the world and wondered what many just like himself had done from time to time.

Was the sun and moon in the real world the same as the one in Hellscape? Many had tried to deduce if they both existed on the same plane or planet.

This was a theory that did not last long however, awakened superhumans who studied astrology had mapped the stars in Hellscape and the stars in the real world. They believed that Hellscape might be from a entirely new world, maybe even another galaxy.

But none of that mattered to Leo, he only cared about the world where his family lived in.

The door to his room opened up and in stepped Trish dressed up in a beautiful red gown and he hair nearly done with a silver hair pin sticking out. She wore black stockings.

"Come on big bro, dad’s making pancakes." She jumped around with great enthusiasm, "Hurry so we can leave."

It was their family tradition to go out when they did any celebration, and one of the few traditions that reminded them of his mother.

Leo gave her a slight smile and bowed slightly, "As my birthday princess orders, I shall obey."

She giggled and ran up to him, hugging him tight. "I love it when you try to talk funny."

’I guess I’ll have to skip morning training for today then.’ Leo told himself.

One day of comfort would not hurt right?

In a few minutes he was already with his family in the dining and eating a sumptuous meal, feeling warm food filled with an assortment of ingredients caused his taste buds to sing in 13 different chorus.

He ate so ravenously that it caused his sister to giggle.

Not long after they were already leaving the house and heading towards the subway, Leo had planned that they spend the day at an amusement part. He knew it was something Trish desperately wanted for a while but she had been smart enough to know that they could not afford some luxuries.

That was why Leo had taken the liberty to plan the day personally, he would pay any price for the joy of his family. His father Jonas would talk to him from time to time, it was mostly casual. Occasionally he would ask how he feared in Hellscape, Leo would answer in whatever truthful and honest version did not include the stories of his always prominent near death experiences.

For most of the ride Leo found it soothing, he looked out of the windows to watch the city fading from his view, all he could see now we’re the tops of some large skyscrepers of firms.

Well it was mostly quiet till Trish started to talk about something from her school and how someone from her class did something annoying.

On the way Leo had some time to think about the school she went to and how much of a deficiency it put her in.

He knew firsthand how a low class school had ruined his life, finding a job would not be easy but that aside it had prepared him poorly from when he became a superhuman.

Leo did not want to imagine what would happen if she perhaps ended up having to go through the same series of near death experiences and praying to survive each time. But his brain still considered the possibilities.

There was nothing to prevent the song of shadows all he could do was prepare her by sending her to one of the more distinguished schools. Even if she did not become a superhuman it would open a new world of possibilities for her, not to mention the nutrient packs and extracurricular activities such schools offered.

After several minutes on the train finally stopped in one of the neighbouring cities known for its sightseeing views and amusement parks.

They made a stop by the bank where he had some of the money he had earned secured in his hand and some more in his father’s account. He also made sure his sister’s account did not lack a slight increment.

Next they took a cab over to amusement park and made sure to play all of the games, well the ones Trish liked. She was very fond of the merry go round, Leo could tell his father has a lot of fun free from his worries.

Leo did not enjoy most of the games really or perhaps they were not really to his taste. He did enjoy watching his sister win at them though, and enjoyed if he won some gifts for her.

He made sure to buy her a brand new necklace on their way back and a set of clothes. Carrying them did not prove to be much of a problem as the storage ring proved to me more effective in that department.

He did get a change of clothes he would be taking back with him to Hellscape but he made sure they were cheap ones.

On their way back he decided they have dinner in a restaurant.

"Yes, go big bro." Trish jumped up, clearly happy about the idea.

Leo could not tell when last they had eaten out as a family. He takes them to one of the classy restaurants he remembered seeing somewhere on the map, when he got there however he was stopped outside of the building by the huge guard who stood guard there.

"I’m sorry but this place is only for the wealthy." The man said.

Before Leo could speak, Trish seemed to read his mind.

"That’s bogus, might as well hang up a sign."

Leo leaned closer to the man and whispered into his ear, "Please just for today, it’s my sister’s birthday." He flashed his ID showing that he was a superhuman.

The huge guard looked at the card then at Trish, and without hesitation he said. "I don’t care, get out."

Leo felt rage building up in his chest, his ears twisted and he could hear the man’s heart pumping. He watched the man jerk back as his eyes flashed a bright purple.

"Son, let’s go." Jonas spoke in a calm, measured tone.

"Quit glaring at me freak." The guard said as he tried to stand his ground.

Trish’s voice sounded stopping him from attacking the man just barely. "Big bro, we can eat someplace else."

Leo looked back at her and smiled lightly, "That we can."

He did not want to think what would have happened if he had killed that man before her eyes, how would she have reacted.

Leo tried to be many things; a loving brother, a good son, a decent person. But above all else he was a superhuman and an awakened one at that.

He was a killer.

Anyone who had heard the song of sorrows once instantly became a killer, with that in mind it was hard to hold on a semblance of sanity.

After becoming a killer in that hell, coming back to the real world and choosing not to be one felt like a denial of true nature.

As they walked down a corner of the road Leo could feel Trish’s hand tighten on his, he wondered if she felt afraid back then.

He paused as something caught his eyes. Or more specific five zeroes on a poster.

The poster looked obscure like it had been made in a hurry.

It helped the words:

WANTED!

AWAKENED SUPERHUMANS NEEDED.

PAY- 500,000 CREDITS.

INTERESTED PARTY, PLEASE CALL- 050-XXX-XXXX

’Well I’ll be damned.’ Leo told himself as he made sure to save the number down on his phone.

They settled for a cheesy but not classy restaurant which did the work just fine, before they returned home.

At the end of they say they were so tired they all turned in early, even Leo was somehow snapped of strength.

The first thing he did however was call the number on the poster, such a large sum of money was crazy and could have already attracted a crowd. But he had to know.

When someone on the other line picked the call he spoke, "Hey, I read from the poster that—"

Before he could finish a grumpy male voice boomed back at him.

"Terrazine club, tomorrow. Noon."

Then the line disconnected.

Leo stared at the phone in his hand dumbfounded, "It’s a date, I guess."
