Chapter 65: Chapter 65

"Hi, Mom. I’m still at work. I’ll come for a visit in the evening, alright?" Winter said as the call was connected.

Usually, her elderly mother called because she wondered when Winter would visit. At first, it was a little troublesome having such a clingy mother.

But Winter knew her mother was old, and they could sometimes feel lonely.

’Besides, it’s better to have her being clingy than dead...’ Winter thought, reminiscing Gina’s fate in her previous life.

"I don’t think you should come today, Winter..."

Winter tensed immediately, worried she might’ve done something wrong or maybe... Cindy had said something to upset her mother.

"Why not, Mom? I thought I already told you I’d come more often, right?"

"Yes, but Cindy..." Gina sighed. It was difficult to utter anything because she felt Cindy had unjustly accused Winter.

"Oh—" Winter paused for a moment and said, "Don’t believe whatever she says, Mom. She’s lying."

"I know. But I don’t understand what turned her to be like this. She’s so angry at you, me, and everyone else," Gina said. "It feels like she’s been possessed. You shouldn’t come to the house for a while, Winter. I don’t want you two to fight here."

Winter was also appalled by Cindy’s sudden change. She had always been a sensible young girl before.

But maybe it was bound to happen in the end. Cindy had a lot of resentment towards her status in the family, and no matter how hard Winter tried to make sure Cindy knew she was well-loved, it seemed she couldn’t shake off Cindy’s doubt.

’But to think that she would be so malicious, wanting to sleep with my husband...’ Winter didn’t have any love for Sebastian, but it was still weird to go after your sister’s husband.

Nevertheless, she understood her mom’s position and didn’t want her to get stressed out.

"It’s fine, Mom. I won’t be visiting for a while. But you should be careful for your safety, alright? Who knows what kind of stunt she will pull next," Winter warned.

Gina’s heart ached when her daughter suggested that. It was a sign of shattering inside the family, and Gina knew the rift would grow until Cindy and Winter couldn’t be saved in the end.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t do anything when Cindy didn’t want to listen to her.

"Don’t worry about me, Winter. I’ll always be here, waiting for you when the time comes," Gina said before she hung up the call.

Beep.

She put her phone in the drawer and saw a small framed picture next to it.

It was a picture from a long time ago when Winter was in high school, and Cindy was still in kindergarten.

Winter carried her little girl, and they smiled together for the picture. They looked happy, and rightfully so, because their joy was Gina’s pride as a mother.

"My two sweet girls..." Gina muttered. Her eyes began to pool with tears as she realized this kind of warmth between Winter and Cindy would never happen again in the future. "What should I do to make Cindy realize she’s wrong?"

**

Winter sighed as she ended the call. She returned to Sebastian’s office, busying herself with reading reports on the company’s ongoing projects in order to allocate their priorities.

Sebastian glanced at his wife and asked, "What happened? Who did you call?"

"It’s nothing. Focus on your work, Sebastian," Winter said seriously as she tried to ignore him.

But Sebastian didn’t give up. "It’s about Cindy, isn’t it?"

Winter didn’t answer at first. But she finally put the paper down when Sebastian kept staring at her.

"Yes, it’s about her. But it’s not your problem. You have a lot on your plate, and I’m here to help so the company can survive," Winter scolded. "So, focus. Don’t waste my time, Sebastian."

But again, Sebastian ignored her order.

"Did she say something to your mother?" he asked solemnly. "She seems like the type to lie a lot to justify what she’s doing."

"She’s not—" Winter wanted to defend her sister. But she knew that was impossible, especially when Cindy lied about many things. "She wasn’t like this before. She became like this after meeting you. You’re a poison to her, Sebastian."

"Perhaps I am," Sebastian said. He looked up and remembered Cindy from his previous life.

Cindy has been a pleasant secretary to work with, the best one Sebastian ever had. So, after working together for so long, he simply let go of his guard down around her and treated her as a friend.

It was the worst mistake he ever made.

"But I think she has always been like this," Sebastian continued. "Maybe she acted sweet and kind towards you because she knew she could get everything from you. Now that you can’t give her what she wants, she’s turned against you."

Winter’s gaze cooled, and she reprimanded him instantly, "What right do you have to accuse my sister like that? Shut your mouth and do your job, Mr. Saenz."

Sebastian grumbled as he lowered his head and began reading the documents in his hand.

Winter was scolding Sebastian for accusing Cindy, but deep down, she knew he was right.

Cindy had probably always been like this. But she suppressed it because she lacked nothing and had never faced any difficulties in this life. She was spoiled and happy.

But now, her ambitions flared up as she realized she wanted Sebastian, and Cindy couldn’t control her emotions.

’Cindy showed consistent behavior both in this life and in my previous life. She became Sebastian’s mistress before, and now she wants to do it again...’ Winter glanced at Sebastian and then thought, ’And you, Mr. Saenz. I don’t know what’s on your mind back then. Are you really in love with Cindy? Then why don’t you show your love to her now?’

Winter sensed something wasn’t right with Sebastian’s actions. He didn’t act exactly as she expected.

’Perhaps he is... no—never mind. It’s just my imagination.’
