Chapter 52: Meeting The Mastermind

I couldn’t get a wink of sleep. The sun was already up, and the birds began their chirping, but everything blurred past me like it was meaningless.

Drevon left and didn’t come back. Dare I say I waited for him to step through the door? Yes, I was frightened after having a glimpse of his canines, and I dreaded the inevitable would happen, but to my surprise, it didn’t.

Drevon didn’t fuck me. I’m not sure that was his intention at the moment. There was this feeling that he left because he didn’t want me to be scared.

I shook my head, but that wasn’t enough, so I slapped my cheeks slightly. I shouldn’t dwell on this right now. Today was a new day, and the very day I had planned for.

A soft knock came from the door.

I threw the covers off my body, crawled out of bed, ignoring the sting between my legs. I held onto the wall for support, rasping. Why is it hurting? Not too much, though, but a very unwelcome reminder of what happened.

I cleared my throat and asked. "Who’s there?"

"Y-Your Grace, it’s me, O-Osha."

"Come in!" I rushed.

The door opened and slammed shut. Relief washed over me as I observed her from head to toe; she was okay! That image of her body barely holding together dissolved.

Osha abruptly dropped to her knees and bowed her head.

"What are you—"

"I-I have failed you, Y-Your Grace! I understand if you don’t want my service. P-Please forgive this unworthy s-servant."

I dropped to my knees in front of her, and she snapped her head up, her eyes wide.

"P-Please, you shouldn’t—"

I embraced her before she could say anything else.

"Y-Your Grace?"

"How stupid of you to think I would let you go so easily. I hate to disappoint you, but I cannot do that." I held her tighter. "Thank you for being okay."

Osha sobbed. "Your G-Grace!" Her hand shakily placed on my back as she buried her face in my neck.

"I should be the one crying." I patted her back, hoping to soothe her.

Osha pulled away. "F-Forgive me, I just..." She sobbed, her nose red.

I smiled. "I’ll admit, at first, I was wary about having a Lycan as my handmaid. I thought they were all the same."

It seems they kept proving me wrong in some way. Not all of them were as the stories depicted. It’s nice to know that there could be more to these beasts in my life.

"I-I understand, I’m not worthy to be your—"

"But I thought wrong." I gave a warm smile. "You’re a sweet thing, Osha, and I couldn’t ask for a better handmaid."

Osha’s eyes turned glassy again, but she didn’t let the tears fall.

But then my smile faded. "Which is why I won’t let those who did this go free," I said, pushing to my feet, but Osha quickly helped me up.

"But the monarch has taken care of those involved in treason."

At the mere mention of Drevon, I found myself blushing. Just a simple thought of him got me feeling fuzzy inside.

Gods! Eloise, you’re so hopeless.

I cleared my throat, taking my seat. "Can I confide in you, Osha?"

"Y-Yes, Your Grace! I’m loyal to you, only you!"

I tested the waters. "What about the monarch?"

"Well, he’s my Alpha, but he has given the command, and now my allegiance lies with you for as long as I may live."

"Then I can trust you with this. It will be between us, no one, and I mean no one needs to know."

Osha nodded profusely.

"House Vale might have been the assailants, but I have a reason to believe there was an enforcer."

"A-An enforcer?"

"The mastermind who pulled the strings of the attack."

Osha looked confused now. "B-But if there were, the monarch would have known."

"The person who did this made sure the monarch wouldn’t suspect them. Lady Sloane."

Her eyes went wide and her mouth agape.

"I’m not completely certain yet, which is why I need to set a plan in motion."

"W-What plan?"

I smirked maliciously. "Summon Lady Sloane Altherin, tell her the monarch’s wife calls for her."

It truly was beautiful. I was so emotional that day that I didn’t get the chance to appreciate this view. The garden of tulips and the ponds nearby, and this wrought iron gazebo. It was just so perfect.

"Osha."

"Yes, Y-Your Grace?"

"Do you have any idea what the monarch is doing right now?"

"O-Oh, I heard he finally attended court after a long time."

Everywhere I go, I keep feeling the ghost of his breath on my lips and the feel of his fingers.

I might have given up to a cheat again, but I didn’t like the way it ended. I got afraid for the right reasons, but Drevon leaving without a word caused a constriction in my chest.

"Y-Your Grace."

At Osha’s voice, I raised my gaze and found Sloane with her handmaid behind, walking down the aisle leading to the gazebo.

As always, she was dressed in her beautiful gown that drew any attention worthy. Her gentle walk, the way her hands tucked in her sleeves, and that soft expression on her face, like she was as delicate as a new bloom.

Tsk! I’m going to rip that mask off.

Suddenly, a sensation found my body, like eyes were upon me. I moved my gaze to the view but found no one in sight. It was that feeling again.

"Lady Eloise, I was so glad you called for me."

I peeled my attention back to the poker face.

Sloane took her seat, adjusting her skirt, and placed her hands on her lap. "I was worried after hearing about the attack. I would’ve come to visit you but there have been unrest in the castle for a while now."

On cue, a sweet smile spread on my lips. "I’m sure you would’ve. I was wrong about you, Lady Sloane, turned out you’re truly kindhearted, and I was a fool to think that you were anything but." freewēbnoveℓ.com
