Chapter 179: Ideal husband

"Prince River?!" The mages exclaimed in surprise, murmuring among themselves.

"Where are Cyrus and Sage?" River inquired, suspecting that his close friend was on the mountain.

"In the portal," Ashton replied with a smile.

"What portal?" River inquired, perplexed.

"The portal through which your lover is attempting to enter." Ashton unexpectedly responded with a bright smile.

"Katherine!" Valerie, who was in the crowd, screamed as she saw her daughter.

River turned to see Katherine walking into the path, which felt more like sinking into an invisible force.

"Stop her! She is being controlled!" Another voice yelled. It was Darren, and he was about to rush over to River and Katherine when Arthur charged at him, grabbed his arm, and threw him to the ground.

River grabbed Katherine and drew her away from the path to face him. He was astounded to see her eyes completely dead, like those of a statkus mage.

"Katherine!" He exclaimed with a whisper.

Katherine’s eyes began to glow as she punched River in the chest with the full force of her powers. River was pushed away from her and groaned in pain.

He sighed deeply as she turned back to face the portal, wanting to go in.

"Knock her out, you dummy!" Ashton screamed.

River was unable to. He didn’t have Cyrus’ powers, which required only a flick of the brow. He didn’t want to hurt Katherine because his way required violence.

Ashton frowned deeply when he saw River not doing anything.

"Katherine!" Valerie called again, this time rushing to her daughter, but Katherine, as if hypnotized, snapped her dead gaze at her mother and blasted her hard, instantly knocking her unconscious, pushing her into the crowd, but Kion was quick to catch her.

"Katherine!" he screamed angrily holding unconscious Valerie protectively.

Katherine returned her gaze to the portal, and just as she was about to enter, Ashton appeared behind her and smacked the side of her neck hard, knocking her unconscious. River then appeared, pushing Ashton away and catching her in his arms.

River awoke from the trance Cyrus had put him and Katherine in order to watch their memories. The glow around them faded, and he felt his lungs constricted to the point where he couldn’t speak.

He wanted to fix his gaze on Cyrus and call out his name when he heard Cyrus scream out agony.

River felt instantly liberated, his golden eyes blazed softly, and he moved away from Katherine, collapsing to the ground and watching Cyrus become covered in a bright white glow while screaming in pain.

Meanwhile, Sage, who was unconscious on the king size bed in Cyrus’ room, was still and disturbingly immobile.

Cyrus was reverting to his normal state, which meant he was yelling because he was experiencing excruciating pain in his heart.

Sage’s eyes flew open, blazing with fiery red, filled with intense agony, and she screamed loudly in pain, as if a sword had been pierced into her heart. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

She sat down immediately, her body trembling and the pain intensifying as if she were being stabbed in the heart continuously. She despised the agony! She wished it would go away! Because it was so intense, she wanted to die at that moment.

She cried out, hugging herself and the struggling as if she had been bound, but the pain would not go away. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her screams seemed inevitable.

"CYRUS!" She screamed, and the pain vanished as if it had never been there in the first place.

Sage let out a shaky gasp and slumped back on the bed. She was sweating and struggling to come to terms with what had just happened to her.

Back in the mansion sitting room, Cyrus stopped yelling, and the glow around him faded, revealing him to be back in his normal state.

He was emitted a freezing air that suddenly filled the room and put out the lit fire that was warming it up.

"That is the most agonizing switch." Cyrus stood up straight, pushing the strands of hair that fell on his forehead to the back of his head, and looked at River, who was staring at him solemnly.

"And I believe it will become even more painful as time passes." River muttered, and Cyrus’ face darkened.

"Sage!" He called, his voice deep and concerned. He quickly vanished from River’s view and reappeared in their room, seeing Sage wide-eyed and hyperventilating as she recovered from the pain.

Cyrus ran to her, climbed the bed, and drew her into his arms, allowing her head to rest on his chest. His heart clenched in worry and regret as he closed his eyes.

She had experienced that agony! A pain so excruciating that he screamed in agony! She had felt it.

Cyrus was beginning to realize that the soul bond had been a huge mistake. He was going to be the source of her pain now, because just because he was good at enduring pain didn’t mean she was. But he realized why the pain was more intense than it had been. Sage was feeling it as well, and her feeling his pain was amplifying it.

"Damnit." He cursed and opened his eyes, looking at her and slowly caressing her hair until her breathing and trembling returned to normal.

"Wait, what happened?" Sage inquired, barely audible.

"I apologize." Cyrus expressed his sadness, which Sage also felt.

"How come you are apologizing?" Sage sighed deeply and asked slowly. "You did not cause the pain... It was so unexpected... I have never felt so intense in my life, until now." She was perplexed, but her voice was becoming clearer and lighter than before, earning Cyrus a small smile as he held her protectively and planted a soft passionate kiss on her forehead.

"Do you recall what happened in the land of the blood sea?" Cyrus inquired calmly, despite his deep concern for her.

’Just tell her! Do not to beat around the bush, you idiot!’ his voice yelled in his head. It was his dark state.

’Shhh, he is being the ideal husband here,’ his demonic state teased and laughed heartily.

’To be honest, I am the ideal husband. Allow me to take over and demonstrate!’ His dark state spoke proudly.

Cyrus smirked at the voices in his head.

’Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! What is going on?! ’Can I read his thoughts?!’

Cyrus was perplexed when he didn’t see Sage’s lips move after hearing her panicked scream.

’Can she hear us?!’ His dark state exclaimed.

’Unfortunately,’ grumbled his demonic form.

"So, this is how the soul bond works." Cyrus sighed and threw his head back, frustrated.
