Chapter 54 - 54 : Mephisto?

**The Next Morning**
The cool autumn air blew through the half-covered window, and the curtains fluttered with the breeze, rustling gently. The sunlight streaming in through the window flickered as it touched the room.

"It's rare to see people on the road at half past six," Finn remarked as he opened the window completely, breathing in the fresh morning air.
Down below, people were already out running along the sidewalk. It was Agent Jimmy Woo of S.W.O.R.D., pretending to be a local resident. Very few people in this neighborhood would be out at this hour.
Since most of the town's residents worked in the nearby city, they didn't start their days as early as those in the fast-paced cities. Westview Town typically didn't begin its workday until around eight or nine in the morning. So leaving home 20 minutes earlier was hardly necessary.
"Agents sure are hardworking," Finn mused, glancing at Wanda, who was curled up in bed. She had promised last night that she would wake up early to study.
But when the alarm had gone off this morning, there was no movement from her at all.
With a small smile, Finn shook his head, picked up the coat draped over him, closed the window, and walked toward the living room.
The crisp air of early autumn was refreshing but not friendly to someone who had just gotten out of bed.
After a quick wash, Finn noticed the time and decided not to rush breakfast. He sat down on the sofa and switched on the TV, tuning into the morning news from BVC, the largest and most authoritative news network in the U.S.
BVC was known for covering major events around the globe, though its reporting sometimes leaned more towards political bias, with some "truths" being questionable.
"According to a report from a Times correspondent yesterday, it was revealed that Shadow, Mysterio, Scarlet Witch, and Spider-Man were all involved in solving a major crisis," the news anchor said.
"Shadow and Mysterio, as the new superheroes, have reportedly saved many lives in the past few days."
The two hosts on TV continued to discuss recent events.
"Nick Fury hasn't disclosed Mysterio's involvement," one anchor continued.
Finn, leaning back on the couch, was surprised to hear this but quickly realized, "Wait, that's not Nick Fury. It's a fake."
The real Nick Fury was off-world, aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. spaceship with the Skrulls.
This revelation made sense. The cautious Fury would never have been fooled by Mysterio. The imposter, however, could easily be manipulated.
The fake Fury probably left Earth soon after completing his mission—without sticking around to handle the aftermath, like Spider-Man's secret identity being exposed.
"Looks like those guys are closing in," Finn muttered to himself, estimating the timeline. The secret of Peter Parker's identity would likely be out next week, sparking a new wave of chaos.
He suddenly remembered last night—he had used magic, something Wanda had seen, but the system hadn't reacted.
It had slipped his mind as he'd gotten distracted by Wanda, but now it was bugging him.
He quickly consulted the system.
[Ding! The hidden strength is linked to the abilities within the system. The host's personal abilities are not subject to judgment!]
Finn nodded as he understood the system's message. The powers he used, such as magic, his spiritual abilities, and the Shadow Corps, all came from the system. So, they were within the system's realm of judgment.
But the magic he had used last night came from the Book of the Damned. It was part of his own powers, not the system's.
For instance, if Finn was out fighting and used his enhanced skills, the system wouldn't count it as a failure.
"If I had known earlier, I should have gone to Doctor Strange's library and stolen a few magic books to study," Finn sighed. He could have taken them easily, and now his strength was far beyond Doctor Strange's level.
Stephen's abilities were still below that of the Ancient One, and Finn knew it would only be a matter of time before he surpassed both.
His thoughts were interrupted when the news caught his attention again.
"There have been several disappearances in Westview Town overnight..." the news anchor said.
"Huh? Westview?" Finn leaned forward in surprise.
"According to police reports, no remains were found, and no one on the surveillance footage was seen leaving the area."
He listened carefully.
Finn was momentarily taken aback. The strange disappearances at night seemed oddly familiar, like something he'd heard of before—maybe related to magic. But he couldn't recall the specifics, so he pushed it aside for now.
He muttered, "A small town like Westview is experiencing weird events now?"
Looking up at the clock, he saw it was almost eight. "Time flies. Wanda should be waking up soon. I'll make breakfast."
Stretching, he got up and headed to the kitchen.
Today, he was in the mood to cook. The relationship with Wanda had evolved, and now he genuinely wanted to make her a meal and take care of her.
The breakfast was simple: a pot of preserved egg and lean pork porridge, some fried dough sticks, and freshly ground soy milk.
Though Finn wasn't much of a cook, he'd prepared the ingredients just in case something unexpected came up.
A few minutes later, the kitchen was filled with the fragrant aroma of breakfast, the scent making anyone who smelled it hungry.
"It should be almost ready," Finn said, as he carefully placed the dishes on the table.
"Finn, did you make breakfast?" Wanda's voice came from behind him.
The door to the bedroom opened, and Wanda stepped out, rubbing her eyes. Her thin pajamas drooped off her shoulders, revealing her smooth, pale skin. Her hair was messy from sleep, giving her an even more relaxed and charming look.
"Yeah, lazybones, hurry up and wash up, or the food will get cold," Finn said with a grin.
Wanda sniffed the air, clearly waking up as the delicious aroma reached her. She walked to the table, surprised. "So you know how to cook?"
The two had been living together for over a month, and they had always gone out for meals. Finn had never cooked at home before.
"Just because you've never seen me do it, doesn't mean I haven't," Finn replied, giving her cheek a playful pinch.
"Don't pinch me, I'm oily," Wanda dodged and rubbed the spot where he'd pinched her. She hadn't washed her face yet, so her skin was a little greasy from sleeping all night.
"No, Wanda, you don't realize just how perfect your skin is," Finn said, reaching out to pinch her face again. Her skin was so smooth and soft that he couldn't resist.
Even after several sleepless nights, there wasn't a trace of dark circles under her eyes. It was almost unfair how perfect she looked.
Giggling, Wanda walked off to the bathroom to wash up.
At the table, Finn asked, "How's the porridge? Delicious?"
"It's amazing," Wanda replied between mouthfuls, finishing the bowl in record time. Her pink tongue licked her lips in satisfaction.
"There's more in the pot, so drink up," Finn said with a smile, refilling her bowl.
Just then, his phone rang from his pocket.
---
"Um?"
He glanced down, picked up the phone, and replied, "No problem, thank you."
A brief exchange of words before he decisively ended the call.
"Who was it?" Wanda asked, intrigued.
"Your house has been built," Finn said slowly.
"So fast?" Wanda was surprised. It had only been a month.
"The construction team said they were a week behind, but everything works fine — water and electricity included. So... what do you want to do with the house? Are you going to live there?"
Finn's words were casual, but the last two questions were what truly mattered.
He knew the house had been chosen by Vision, and the circumstances surrounding it were a little complicated.
"Sell it."
Wanda's answer was immediate and resolute.
"Sell?" Finn blinked in surprise.

He hadn't expected such decisiveness from Wanda.
"I've completely let go of the past," Wanda continued, looking him in the eye. "If I keep thinking about it, it would be disrespectful to you."
Wanda's expression was serious, her eyes clear. "Finn, I don't want you to be sad. So, let's sell the house."
"Thank you, Wanda," Finn said softly, a warm feeling spreading inside him. People would never guess that beneath Wanda's seemingly indifferent exterior, there was such a heartwarming side.
After breakfast, as planned, they listed the newly completed house online with the help of an agent from the town.
The house, built with the land, wasn't cheap. Though the taxes weren't excessive, the price was raised because of the land's value. But, given the area and its permanent usage rights, it was likely to sell fast.
Bam, bam, bam!!
There was a hurried knock at the door.
"Finn, is Wanda with you?" came a familiar voice, tinged with a slight accent.
Finn opened the door, revealing two people standing outside. They were Jimmy Woo and Monica Rambeau, agents of the S.W.O.R.D. Bureau who had moved into the area a few days ago.
"What's going on?" Finn asked, not hiding his displeasure. He didn't have a high opinion of S.W.O.R.D. — they were just like S.H.I.E.L.D., always showing up when something bad was about to happen.
"We're looking for Wanda," Jimmy Woo said, pointing to the room behind Finn.
"Woo, how could Wanda be at his house?" Monica shot him a look, clearly unimpressed.
"Given what Wanda's been through, there's no way she'd be able to get over it this fast. I don't think that's the issue," Monica continued, crossing her arms.
"What do you need me for?" Wanda called out, poking her head around Finn.
She frowned slightly when she saw the two agents, her tone cooling. "I sense the aura of the S.W.O.R.D. Bureau..."
"S.W.O.R.D. Bureau? Is that the rogue organization you mentioned before?" Finn pretended to be surprised, raising an eyebrow.
"Cough, cough, cough..." Jimmy Woo cleared his throat, trying to salvage the situation. "There was a misunderstanding before. Hayward asked us to investigate a case. There's no real case... but we need to talk."
"So, he suspects that I'm involved with this case?" Wanda's voice dripped with disdain.
Her pretty face, pale as snow, twisted into a sneer. The temperature in the air seemed to drop with it.
"It's a misunderstanding. We know now that you were involved in Nick Fury's mission two days ago, and we came to apologize for that." Jimmy Woo hurried to explain, sensing the chill.
Finn and Wanda had been away a few days ago. They thought something major was going to happen. Turns out, they were just handling a supervillain.
"So, you're just here to apologize?" Wanda's gaze was cold, her patience wearing thin. "Spit it out."
"We're here because of a strange case. People have been disappearing at night recently, and when the sun comes up, their rooms are empty. No clues, no evidence, and no footage."
Jimmy Woo stated the purpose of their visit, his tone grim.
Finn's attention sharpened. This case sounded familiar. The news report from earlier that morning had mentioned a similar incident. The police had deliberately covered up the truth, likely to avoid causing a panic.
"Mysterious disappearances?" Wanda asked, her brows knitting together. "In Westview?"
"Exactly. Although the police couldn't find anything, we discovered some clues. A little girl was driving at high speed. She said someone was coming to take her, but she managed to break free just in time." Jimmy Woo handed them a folder.
He glanced at Finn and Wanda, then coughed awkwardly. "This is a confidential S.W.O.R.D. document. Don't show it to anyone."
"If you don't let him see it, neither will I," Wanda said firmly, snatching the folder and opening it.
Jimmy Woo hesitated but said nothing. He knew better than to argue with Wanda.
The first page contained a file on the little girl. There was a transcript of what she had said, but Wanda didn't pay much attention to that. Instead, her gaze lingered on the picture of the girl.
The girl in the photo was young, no older than six. She had blonde hair and pale skin, a picture of innocence, almost identical to Hermione when she was a child.
Wanda studied the picture, then nudged Finn. "Finn, we've seen her before."
"Which time?" Finn asked, turning to look at the photo.
Wanda tapped the photo. "It's the girl we saved the other night."
Finn's memory clicked into place. "That's right," he said, looking up at the two agents. "The one you and I helped when you first arrived in Westview."
"Seems like the S.W.O.R.D. agents are lucky, huh? The witch is willing to help you," Finn said with a slight grin.
Wanda shot him a look. "Finn, stop telling them what I think."
"You are the roundworm in my stomach, remember?" Finn teased, already knowing how Wanda felt. She couldn't ignore a case like this, especially one involving a child.
As much as the S.W.O.R.D. agents and Wanda might be thinking this was a simple case, Finn knew it was far more complicated. The disappearances, the girl... it was all leading somewhere, and he had a chilling suspicion about what that could mean. Mephisto.
Could the demon's influence be behind the strange events in the town? Mephisto was known for his manipulations, and if he was involved, this case would be far more than just missing people. It would mean they were up against something much darker, something tied to the supernatural.
But what was Mephisto's endgame here? And what role did this innocent-looking little girl play in it?
Wanda had looked at the girl with nothing but love and concern, and it was no surprise she would get involved.
"Wanda, on behalf of the S.W.O.R.D. Bureau, we thank you," Jimmy Woo said, bowing slightly in gratitude.
Wanda's expression hardened. "You should be thanking us. I'll take the girl."
She gave Finn a pointed look as she spoke, her tone final. Finn had no objection. In fact, it made sense to accompany her. With everything going on, it was safer for them both to stick together.
Besides, the addresses involved were all within Westview Town's limits, so there was no need to venture outside.
After a few minutes of gathering their things, Finn and Wanda followed Jimmy and Monica to the little girl's house.
