Chapter 2836: 2836. Unique Monsters Underwater

’Hollow bone coral

This coral is actually derived from the same minerals that make up the bones of some monsters. Due to this, it got the name bone coral and also hollow because it grows in tube like forms. This is also how it is able to symbiotically grow with the slip worm fish that inhabit it. Because of this, the small thin monsters have a safe place to hide.

The slip worm dish will hide food it captures within the coral allowing for the coral to gather the nutrients it needs from the rotting food often left behind by the slip worm fish...’

’Green tarp kelp

This is a very large form of kelp that only grows in warmer waters. It grows like a sheet able to cover a larger area so that it can gather more light from the sun. it is considered an ideal material to make seaweed leather for water resistant items from...’

’Carnivorous coral

This is actually a monster that grows to mimic the coral it has grown near. While rthios coral often looks very close to the coral around it, the small spikes that would stab in to prey and keep them attached until they die of bleeding or starvation are how to tell them apart. The small spikes are tough and hard to break making them ideal materials for needles and sewing...’

Walker saw some uses in the different corals and the seaweeds. Some he could harvest because they were actually monsters. He would have a new type of sewing needle for his little sister who was still taking Genesis by storm with the amount of new clothing products she was making. Especially the clothing for those who wanted to draw in specific manas and cloaks for mages.

Regardless of that, he also noticed that the green tarp kelp was an amazing material. The uses for protecting ships and people from water while traveling would be huge. Especially since he noticed it grew quickly and that meant it would be a great material to farm. The merfolk living here could make a larger market for it then sell the refined material to crafters who would make waterproof gear for adventurers, guards, and the average person.

Along with this, Walker noticed the corals growing and how they seemed in competition with one another. They all grew around in larger groups, some toward the light where the warmer waters were and some grew in to the rocky sandy bottom where they could expand in to larger areas without competition. It was just like the jungle where trees grew trying to get taller and get to the light better.

With this came the parasitic corals too though. Just the same as vines and other smaller plants that grew in and on the roots of other plants.

The corals he spotted would need to be watched if there was a farm of any form underwater here. Scylla had pointed out a small handful of them but Walker began gathering a lot more information that a few of her attendants following them noted down. They would pass this information to those who needed it or who were exploring areas for potential farming and gathering.

Otherwise, he also spotted some pests and small dangerous monsters.

"We will have to tell people to avoid those snails, the pink spiral snail is poisonous and just touching it means asking for paralysis and death." Walker had spotted it and appraised just in time to stop one of the attendants from brushing it with their leg. It would have been a very bad moment as Walker would have needed to rush to find the right solution for the poison extracted from the snail’s skin.

"We also shouldn’t touch the blade leg centipedes. They might be able to swim like fish but they are amphibious and eat the green window seaweed that basks in the sun during lower tide hours. That seaweed is in the sun because it is absorbing light mana to be able to combat the dark decaying mana from the rocks it roots in to. Those rocks are toxic and the light helps the seaweed balance that. It is an interesting plant."

It would get more and more confusing but Scylla just nodded along while she watched the various groups of merfolk, adventurers, and demi-humans that came along with her. They were still in a fairly well scouted area that they could keep eyes on. But they were moving further away toward areas they had yet to scout. Places that might be ideal for them to start putting down roots so to speak.

"There is one of the monsters we are worried about. It looks fine but if you get too close it has three heads not one." Walker saw the yellow and red striped eel the size and length of one of the ships, gliding through the larger coral near the bottom of the ocean. He knew that it didn’t seem dangerous and it clearly only had one head, but when he did the appraisal, he was shocked.

’Hidden maw eel

This eel is deceptive. It swims around blind using water mana to sense its prey. This is because it has a false mouth where three heads are hidden so it can approach prey and then open the false maw to allow longer heads to lash out and kill their prey.

It does not have venom like other eels in its habitat but instead assigns an ambush method due to its appearance. It is known to be very territorial and will not allow another monster to get near it or touch it. However, it will often leave larger groups of monsters alone since it can not attack more than three at once.

The teeth it possesses are shed once a year so that new tougher teeth can grow in, this makes the fallen teeth valuable water affinity materials for crafting pendants able to channel stronger water mana....’

"We had three of our guards injured before we killed the first one. Before we brought the guards and the body out one of the zebra sharks decided to attack and we lost the body. Luckily we saved the injured guards and they are recuperating." As if to prove Scylla’s point, a speeding shark moved showing that the stripes on its body worked well with the filtering light through the coral. It could hide a lot better than if it was out in the open. It was just waiting for a chance to steal prey.

’anemone turtle

This turtle is able to capture larger tentacle anemone which act as part of its shell and will eventually kill it when it grows too large. However, in its youth the turtle captures and uses the anemone to defend itself while its shell is soft. Therefore preventing predators from bothering them...’

"The ways that the monsters survived there are amazing. I would never imagine how they found methods to do this. But they must have traveled here from the open seas and ended up here and more or less developed or adapted. They even do things to be safe as young and that kills them later. It is an isolating lifespan that works perfectly for their species."

Nature was an amazing and terrifyingly creative thing. Walker believed it to be that way no matter where or when. But he was always reminded of it when he least expected it.

"Well, one place we have been unable to consider as a territory has a monster that used to be something living on land. The appraisal scrolls and monster appraisals we did call it an ancestor of the obsidian rock turtle. A volcanic monster that somehow adapted to become a magma vent turtle. It’s massive and we can not approach the boiling water around it. We think it is the reason that there is not a single area too full of lava flows and toxic water."

Now Scylla has Walker’s curiosity. Yes they had been looking for areas that would be safe for the merfolk to begin building a village and eventually a city. But learning about the major factors that kept this part of the ecosystem functioning was also very valuable. Especially since the merfolk would need to keep an eye on them and protect it. Some people would always choose the wrong path and might break a delicate natural balance.

The demon king has been the very same. His desires led to the break down of the bridges of the elemental planes harming the world as a whole for many years. So why couldn’t something on a smaller scale happen just like that?

"Show me that so I can get an idea of how close you might need to establish the first camp to consider a village." Walker let Scylla take the lead again.
