Mated to the Mad Lord-Chapter 158: Death is freedom
Chapter 158: Death is freedom
He had expected to see Cain visit them, which was why the longer time passed and Howie saw no sign of him, the more his worry grew.
In the depths of the cell they had been locked in, there was no way to know what time of day it was or whether or not it was midnight, but Howie had kept track. It had been difficult, but somehow he had managed it, which was why not seeing Cain return worried him.
One of his eyes had been removed, but he was a werewolf. With the right potion from a witch, he would have no problem recovering it, but that would not be the case if his heart were to stop beating and he were to die.
Still, he could do nothing but sit on the floor in the dim and cold cell, waiting with apprehension for Cain to arrive. He was still considering whether or not to remind the people with him, leaning against the opposite wall, to mind whatever they were going to say when, suddenly, he heard loud footsteps.
At first, it sounded far away, but soon it became clear that it was headed straight toward their cell. Howie instantly scrambled off the floor, and he wasn’t the only one, as the other three guards with him also did the same, just as Cain’s face became clear and he moved to stand right in front of the cell.
"You all look good!" he commented with a sigh, even as he looked like he would rather be elsewhere with the way he barely glanced at them as he gestured toward the guard beside him to open the cell.
"I can’t take your other eyes yet, but today, we’ll start with ears. We might move to fingers and—" Cain was still speaking when one of the other three saw a need to interrupt. Trembling from head to toe and shaking in fright as Cain spoke, it was more than clear that he would do exactly as he said.
It was the one who had shouted at Howie among the three who immediately got on his knees and began to speak. "Pl-please, my lord... I know nothing about this. I simply went to the stable because Savi said there was a problem with it! He was the one we—"
He was interrupted as Howie also began to speak, knowing better than to let him finish as he pointed right back at the guard.
"He was the one we found inside!" Howie said with a genuinely scared tone in his voice as he pointed at the man who knelt on the floor right in front of Cain. "If anyone among us is the culprit, then it’s him!"
Howie had just finished speaking when the other two, who stood closest to the wall, knew better than to keep quiet, especially when they had gotten to such a turning point. If they continued to remain silent and somehow Howie got taken down, then Howie was bound to confess about the things they had done and drag them down too.
One after the other, they began to speak. "It’s definitely him! It’s Bajón!"
"Yeah! It’s him! He’s the one we found inside!" they spoke, one after the other, pointing straight at Bajón, who had a completely shocked expression on his face. He looked back, astonished by the fingers being pointed at him.
"Are you—are you insane!" he screamed at the other two, glancing at Howie with a regular glare on his face before turning to look at the other two guards with a hint of shock in his eyes at being suddenly and completely betrayed.
"How—HOW DARE YOU!" Spit splattered out of his mouth as he spoke, knowing that if Cain wasn’t there, he would have pounced on them. He struggled and did his best to speak coherently. freёweɓnovel.com
"My lord! I swear to you... it’s definitely Howie!" Pointing at him just in case Cain wasn’t sure who he was pointing at. "These two are just trying to shift the blame on me because—because—" he stuttered, realizing that he couldn’t go ahead and just say that Howie had evidence they were spies, which would also get him killed.
"...because they hate me!" he finished, about to say more, only to see Cain suddenly erupt with a light chuckle, his arms folded together as he spoke.
"...then you must really be a bad man for them to hate you enough that they want you dead!" Cain said with a mirthless chuckle, his gaze darkening as he continued to speak, shifting his gaze over to Howie, who felt a shiver run down his spine as he heard Cain’s next words.
"So the one kneeling is saying that it’s you, and you and the other two are saying that it’s him!" he said with a humming sound that made it seem like he was deep in thought, even if he wasn’t. He moved forward and stepped into the cell as all the others backed away.
"...then that rules out the both of you!" he said, pointing at the two who stood the farthest away, who instantly looked like they were on the edge of being rescued as they immediately nodded their heads vigorously and answered.
"Yes, my lord!"
"My lord! It’s true! We have absolutely nothing to do with it!" They responded, one after the other, smiles blossoming on their faces as if Cain had already agreed to set them free. They watched Cain nod his head as he signaled to the guard behind him with a gesture of his hand.
Looks of jealousy plastered Howie’s and Bajón’s faces as they both regretted not staying back, but that was until they saw Cain collect a gun from the guard. Their bodies shook in alarm, expecting Cain to point it at their heads and shoot them, only to see him do the exact opposite.
"My lord!"
"My-my lord!" the other two said, dropping to their knees with expressions of utter confusion on their faces. They had expected Cain to set them free, only to watch him raise a gun in their direction. They raised their voices, speaking louder, almost as if Cain—a werewolf with more than excellent hearing—hadn’t heard them the first time around.
"We—we had nothing to do with this!"
"We—we thought you would set us free!"
They begged, one after the other, only to hear Cain say words that made their blood run cold.
"I am setting you free! Death for you is freedom!" he said, pulling the trigger as he shot out multiple bullets, even before he was done speaking. He was satisfied as he saw that he had aimed right at their heads and hadn’t missed.
Shooting multiple bullets into the same hole until the bullets dug right into their brains to make sure they were indeed dead, Cain had just turned his gaze toward the remaining two, who had fallen flat on their faces, when he heard footsteps approach him from the side.
