Chapter 82: ...Be scared

"It’s the western part of the district! They’re attacking our food resources!" Frank hurriedly spoke, even as Cain nodded his head to show that he understood.

Violet remained sitting on the bed with a worried expression on her face as different thoughts scrambled through her mind. If he leaves, then I’ll be able to open the doors! Her hands tightened against the sheets as she realized the repercussions of what she had been told to do.

People would die—Cain’s men! And she would have been the reason for it. Yet, no matter how much Violet thought about it, she couldn’t also refuse to do it, especially since it would be her family that would die the second Rexter found out that she failed to do her job.

Tears formed in her eyes as she scrambled off the bed. For a second, when she had been about to quietly watch a movie with Cain, she had forgotten where she was and why she had been specifically put there—only to remember all at once.

"I’m concerned that the attack on the storage facility might be a way to distract us while they attack you!" Frank said, speaking out his concerns without hesitation.

It is! But Violet couldn’t tell them that as she continued to listen by the side, waiting for what Cain’s decision would be. She didn’t have to wait long as he spoke after a moment of silence.

"Regardless! Take most of the guards with you and protect the facility. The war was intense, and the people barely have anything to eat. I won’t allow them to starve simply to protect myself!"

"Go! But return the second you see the call-back flare up in the sky!" Cain ordered, Frank bowing his head as he got back on his feet before leaving.

Tears tickled the corners of Violet’s eyes as she gritted her teeth, trying to show minimal expressions even as her heart threatened to break. Realizing, for the first time, just what being a spy meant. It meant killing multiple people and affecting people’s lives while pretending to do it for a good cause.

Wouldn’t being a whore be better? At least I would only have to pleasure people for a living! she bitterly thought to herself, her face lowered to the floor as she felt one tear slowly slide down her cheek.

A hand grabbed her face the second it happened. He appeared in front of her with a thoroughly confused expression on his face.

"Why are you crying?" he asked, almost like he couldn’t think of a reason why she would feel the urge to.

His fingers wiped off the tear, as a subtle frown formed on his face. "I’ll protect you!" Words that sounded more like a promise and felt like a knife stabbed right through her heart.

"You should go!" Violet whispered, but Cain was just about to respond when a loud blaring sound echoed through the mansion. Violet’s head jerked up as she watched Cain turn his head, his gaze focused on the right side of the wall, almost like he was listening to something she would have never been able to hear.

The siren continued to blare, even as Cain’s expression slowly became more severe as he turned to look at Violet.

"Stay right here! STAY HERE!" he repeated, almost like he was making sure that she understood the order. "Close the door behind you! Neither werewolves nor Reds can break it down!" he began to speak, as Violet watched him turn around, moving towards the shelf by his study table and pushing it back to reveal a rack of weapons that had her eyes widening in shock.

She was surprised to see Cain pick out a single gun and a long wooden stake, which he made sure to thoroughly drench first in a transparent liquid from the bottle he poured.

Holy water! Violet thought, her eyes fixed on him and the weapons, watching him hold them with ease. A mostly blank expression was on his face as he asked with such calmness that Violet almost found it difficult to take her eyes off him.

Only to see him stop right in front of the door before turning back to look at her, where she continued to stand by the bed.

"Violet!" he called, and Violet knew he was asking her to move closer, which she immediately did until there was only about a foot of distance between them.

"Do not leave this room!" he said, a strange intensity in his voice as his eyes bored right into her own. "If you do..." he whispered in a colder tone without completing it. Yet Violet’s mouth dropped open ever so slightly as she realized that Cain was threatening her—something he had never done before.

His hands wrapped around her neck and pulled her closer, close enough to kiss her, but he didn’t. Instead, he whispered through gritted teeth, his breath fanning her face.

"...I don’t know what I’ll do, but you should be scared!" His gaze was dark, his hands tightening ever so slightly against her neck before he dropped his hand and walked out through the door, slamming it behind him.

The silence was scary as Violet stood behind the door, her heart racing, unable to hear a thing. The urge to peep and look out to see what was going on was strong, but she stamped it down. Yet she couldn’t forget the instructions she was meant to follow.

If they get to the side doors and it’s not open— she thought, her spine tingling with fear as she recalled Cain’s clear warning at the same time and what would happen if he found her outside disobeying his orders.

"Fuck!" she screamed out loud, satisfied at the outburst she had been trying to have for days and unable to because of her close proximity to Cain.

"Shit! Shit!" she muttered under her breath, staring at the door handle for a long while, even as her heart thumped wildly in her chest before she finally made the decision.freёwebnoѵel.com
