Modern World Warlock-Chapter 224: The Necromancer, Netherius
In the world of Terra, there was a small island called Death-Crumble Valley, which used to be part of a kingdom that fell to ruins.
The island didn't have more than five hundred people in it. However, every single one of the residents was a necromancer.
After the king gave his approval for the research of necromancy, the mages' experiments led to the utter destruction of their nation, with the only survivors being the necromancers on the island.
Thousands of years later, the man known as Netherius was born to a sickly woman who had been captured by the residents of Death-Crumble Valley, passing away during his birth.
Netherius' childhood was similar to Dante's, as he spent his first few years in an orphanage, training with the necromancers who lived nearby.
By the time Netherius was old enough to care for himself, he left the island and traveled through a few continents as an adventurer, receiving discrimination and hatred from the people around him.
While Dante was eventually picked up by his party, Netherius was left all alone, never finding anyone willing to share his burdens.
At some point, the necromancer's loneliness affected him, deciding to become the evil monster that everyone deemed him to be.
As Netherius started massacring entire villages and turning the corpses into zombies or ghouls to fight for him, his infamy was spread all over the world.
During his years of relentlessly attacking innocent towns, Netherius managed to gather an army and used it to go to war against a mighty nation.
The entire country of "Dilaran" went to war with a single necromancer and lost. However, instead of conquering the nation, Netherius razed everything to the ground—deleting all traces of its culture.
It took a long time for Dante and his party to encounter Netherius out of pure coincidence, as they found themselves in a city called "Jarsion," which was being targeted by the necromancer.
Dante's party wasn't explicitly looking for the necromancer, as they had other objectives in mind at the time. However, not wanting to fall prey to Netherius' attack on the city, they stood against him.
The battle was long and arduous, leaving almost the entire city destroyed among thousands of casualties.
Thanks to the efforts of Dante and his party, they managed to put an end to Netherius' slaughter. However, when the warlock dealt the final blow, they sensed the necromancer casting a final spell that never activated.
Faelyn, the elven wizard in Dante's party, didn't recognize the spell that was used, so they had no way of knowing what the effects would be.
As Dante told the story to the people in the briefing room, they all quietly listened with their utmost attention.
"I see… It's not that you only defeated him. You genuinely thought he was dead," Camille muttered, placing a hand on her chin.
"Yes. We never figured out what spell he used at the last second of his life, but now I'm getting a rough idea…" Dante replied.
"A reincarnation spell…" Asphodel interjected, seemingly delving into her thoughts.
Zac, the self-proclaimed fantasy enthusiast, raised his hand and wondered if a reincarnation spell wouldn't simply send Netherius' soul to another body in their world, and the warlock agreed with his doubt.
"Necromancers are very secretive about their magic, so I don't consider myself an expert… I do know of a reincarnation spell they used to switch their souls from one body to another," Dante explained.
"Even so, most necromancers that strive for immortality turn into undead themselves instead of changing bodies completely…" he continued.
The warlock had never heard anything about a spell that could send someone's soul to a different body in another world, which was the main reason he was so shocked when he discovered that Darius was actually Netherius.
Moreover, necromancers could only possess corpses, implying that the real Don Darius had passed away a long time ago.
"Okay, so… What exactly is an undead anyway?" June asked.
"You know… People who are neither dead nor alive," Dante replied, but his description was too vague.
When he elaborated further, he explained that there were lots of different types of undead that necromancers could create. It all depended on the corpses and the amount of power used on them.
"Zombies, skeletons, ghouls… Those are some of the weaker ones," Dante commented.
Using a single human corpse wouldn't be enough to create a high-level undead, but raising it as a zombie was simple enough for a necromancer.
However, if they had hundreds of corpses to work with, they could create an entire zombie horde or fuse the cadavers together into an amalgamation to produce a stronger minion.
"D-do you get infected and turn into a zombie if they bite you!?" Zac inquired, using zombie movies as an example.
"You won't turn into a zombie, but their bite does have a decaying effect that rots the skin… So, try to avoid getting bitten," the warlock replied.
As Dante kept clearing their doubts, Camille sighed and reclined back on her chair.
"I understand now why you were so restless back at the reunion…" Camille commented.
Ever since the Jade Dragons came across Dante, he hadn't shown nerves or fear a single time.
Their initial problems were caused by demons, and eradicating them was the warlock's specialty, so even when their situation didn't look promising, Dante didn't show a hint of panic.
However, Netherius was a magic user who was just as strong, or maybe even stronger than Dante, considering that it took the support of his entire party to defeat him.
While the Omega Team could've been regarded as a party, Camille knew that they weren't even close to the level of Dante's old party members.

Furthermore, it wasn't just Netherius who was a threat to them, as the mage inhabiting Don Ruben's body was also known as one of the most powerful wizards in the world of Terra.
'Zombies, wizards… and most likely androids too,' Camille pondered.
'We need to check our priorities…' she continued, placing a hand on her chin inquisitively.
