Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Protecting The Witness

Jojo knew better than to tell anyone what had happened between Sisi and his father, especially since Sisi had been struggling desperately to break free from his father’s embrace.

"Daddy... Daddy knows about my eyes. He... he left to find medicine for me!"

For the first time in his life, Jojo lied to protect Sisi’s dignity and his father’s honor. It felt wrong, because Sisi always told him to be truthful to good people, and he felt that this maid was a good beastwoman.

But saving Sisi and his father was his priority—even if it meant lying.

Diane seemed to take that answer seriously and said, "We’ll have to inform your father once he returns, My Prince. The fact that there is an unknown assailant running loose who dared to attack you and Mistress Sisi means the palace is dangerous."

"But don’t worry. The main chamber has been fully guarded from the outside, so nobody can enter until the Beast King has arrived," Diane assured him. "Though... what about Mistress Sisi, My Prince? Is she... alright? May I check on her?"

Jojo had been overly protective of the unconscious mistress, and when Diane asked for permission, he hugged her even tighter. He was reminded of his father’s instruction not to let anyone harm Sisi while he was gone.

Even though he knew that Diane wasn’t a bad person, Jojo still didn’t want to let go—at least not until his father returned.

"Sisi... Sisi is fine! She’s just tired! She’ll wake up later," Jojo said, and Diane finally stopped asking. She also noticed that Mistress Sisi wasn’t harmed, because her cheeks were still ruddy and there were no open wounds anywhere.

"Alright, I’ll be back with a meal for you, My Prince," Diane said. "I’ll also dispatch a few guards to start searching around the palace to find that attacker!"

"O-oh, you can ask Big Coconut Sister about that! She helped us just now," Jojo said. "Where is she? Is she alright?"

"...She is alright, My Prince. But she needs rest," Diane replied as she stood up. "Please stay put. I’ll be back soon with food for you."

"Mm! Thank you!"

Diane wore a thin smile as her eyes scoured the room, trying to find anything suspicious. She made sure all the windows were locked, but noticed plenty of holes in the wooden floorboards and the walls.

She guessed it must have been Mistress Sisi’s power, because the holes were randomly scattered and ranged from the size of an adult’s finger to an adult’s fist.

Diane still had many questions in mind, but since the Little Prince was very defensive, she decided to let him rest for now.

Before leaving, Diane grabbed a few linens from the wardrobe and covered each hole to give Mistress Sisi and the Little Prince some privacy.

Then, she finally left after closing the door.

There were at least fifteen guards around the main building inside the Queen’s courtyard, followed by two generals who had just arrived in a hurry.

"What happened here? Where is the King?" Pell, the Elephant General, asked with his weapon drawn, ready for a fight after hearing the commotion in the Queen’s courtyard.

"Someone attacked Mistress Sisi and the Little Prince while the Beast King was away," Diane reported.

"What?!" Garou, who had just arrived and was ready for battle, was also alarmed by the report. His body went cold at the thought of the Little Prince and Sisi being seriously injured. "Where are they? Are they alright?"

"They are alright, but the maids, Leah and Ruela, were injured while fighting the assailant," Diane continued. "I think it’s best for you two to start searching around the palace. If we don’t catch the attacker before the Beast King returns, all of us will be punished."

Pell and Garou nodded and quickly left with their soldiers in opposite directions, making sure to sweep the entire palace.

However, Garou intentionally took the path that passed the palace doctor’s office. Diane had whispered to him before he left that Ruela was heavily injured and needed to be protected at all costs because she was the only eyewitness to the ordeal.

Garou checked the doctor’s office and saw Ruela lying on the bed while being treated by the crane physician and the deer doctor.

Garou didn’t have much impression of the former concubine, except that she had a "good" body for a female beastman. But everyone in the palace knew that, considering she wore a dress more suited for a prostitute during the Little Prince’s royal banquet.

Aside from that, they had once accidentally bumped into each other at the gate of the Queen’s courtyard, and Garou had thought she didn’t look as malicious as the gossip suggested.

Nevertheless, his duty now was to watch over her. Since she was the only eyewitness, the attacker might return to finish her off.

"How is her wound?" Garou asked the physician and doctor.

"It’s bad. She lost too much blood," the deer doctor replied. "We’ve treated her as much as we can, but it will take a while for her to wake up."

"And even if she wakes up, her vocal cords might be damaged," the crane physician added. "Her voice may become rough like sandpaper, or worse... she could become mute."

Garou couldn’t help but sympathize with her.

Ruela was a woman at the peak of her beauty. If she truly lost her voice, her chances of finding a mate would be greatly reduced.

She had already been disgraced by having her concubine title stripped. With her voice ruined as well, she might very well end up alone.

’Though, I don’t find anything wrong with her losing her title. Obviously, the King only likes Mistress Sisi, and I can see why...’ Garou thought. ’But if nobody wants her... then what will become of her?’

As Garou continued staring at the unconscious Ruela, a faint sense of protectiveness stirred in his heart, urging him to keep her safe—no matter what.
