Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Are You Very Proud?

Leon Lynch looked directly at her. Though the night was as cool as water, Nora Ainsworth could certainly feel it.

"I missed you."

His words made Nora Ainsworth squirm as if she were itching all over. "COUGH, COUGH. Fallen in love with me? So much that you can’t tear yourself away?"

A hint of a smile touched his eyes. "You read my mind."

Nora Ainsworth grew even more uneasy. "Stop joking. A playboy like you has probably said this to countless other women. Of course you’re so smooth about it."

Leon Lynch’s eyes narrowed. "I don’t say those words lightly."

Nora Ainsworth turned away. "I had classes all day and I’m a little tired. You should head back."

He took half a step closer. "You don’t look tired to me. You just look uncomfortable. Aren’t you supposed to be easygoing? It’s not like this is our first time alone together."

Nora Ainsworth pulled her clothes tighter around herself. "It’s getting cold out here in the yard. Leon, why don’t you head home first and call me when you get there, okay?"

She really didn’t want to keep standing here with Leon Lynch like a fool. Plus, there was an inexplicable awkwardness to the situation, and she felt insecure.

Of course, Leon Lynch could see her discomfort, but he wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip by.

"No." His clear voice held an undeniable, authoritative tone.

Nora Ainsworth looked him straight in the eye. "Aren’t you cold?"

His gaze was scorching. Suddenly, he wrapped an arm around her neck, and with a slight tug, Nora Ainsworth found herself pulled tightly into his embrace.

It all happened in an instant.

Nora Ainsworth remained surprisingly calm. She gave him a light push, but it clearly had no effect.

"Don’t move." His voice, unlike its earlier coolness, now held a surprising tenderness. "Let me just hold you for a moment. Someone’s watching."

A faint scent of cologne wafted from Leon Lynch, and Nora Ainsworth stopped moving.

She assumed it was one of the servants watching. Little did she know, the eyes belonged to another man.

Several minutes passed in stillness. Then, whether by premonition or pure coincidence, Nora Ainsworth suddenly looked up, right into Leon Lynch’s chin.

The next instant, he pulled her flush against him. Nora Ainsworth could barely breathe. Her eyes flew wide, and she shoved him away with all her might before turning to run.

Leon Lynch didn’t give chase, just a smile playing on his lips. He glanced again toward the spot where someone had been watching, but the figure was long gone.

He hadn’t seen who it was, only a dark silhouette standing there.

Thinking of the sweet fragrance that had just filled his senses, he couldn’t help but smile.

Nora Ainsworth ran, panting for breath. As she rounded a row of trees, something suddenly tripped her. Before she could even cry out, a hand clamped over her mouth.

Her mind went completely blank. The first thought that surfaced was, ’Rape and murder?’

She’d expected to faint or be tied up, but her ’assailant’ clearly had no intention of doing either.

She looked back at him. In the darkness, his eyes were exceptionally bright.

But the source of that light wasn’t warmth—it was a coldness like chips of ice.

Quentin Grant released her. "I saw."

Nora Ainsworth was completely bewildered. "What did you see?" she asked.

His eyes looked like they could eat her alive. Realization dawned on Nora Ainsworth. "The person spying just now... that was you?"

"Spying?" He scoffed, a cold sneer on his lips. "Feeling proud of yourself?"

His sneer terrified her, and she quickly forced a placating smile. "What are you talking about? Of course not. He’s nothing compared to you, absolute trash. He’s not even a drop in the ocean. Besides, he forced me! You saw it, I didn’t want to, I swear!"
