Mr. CEO, You Look Strangely Familiar-Chapter 37: Unless You’re Dead
He knelt down and took off her shoes. Her ankle was severely swollen.
He went to the freezer, took out a small bag of ice, and placed it on her ankle. The cold seeped into her skin.
Half an hour later, he brought over a first-aid kit, applied some anti-inflammatory medicine, and finally wrapped her ankle with gauze.
"Do you want to stay here tonight?"
"No!"
Even though it hurt terribly, the slightest movement sending a sharp pain through her, Nora Ainsworth still couldn’t take the convenient option of staying over.
Quentin Grant knew what she was thinking and said coolly, "Sooner or later, people will find out that you’re the woman I keep in the shadows."
Nora Ainsworth’s heart clenched. She stared at him. "As long as you don’t admit it, no one will ever truly believe it."
He leaned down, looking down at her. They were barely two fingers’ breadth apart. Seeing each other from such a close distance, Nora Ainsworth’s heart suddenly stopped beating.
Quentin Grant’s warm breath washed over her face, and the half-smile in his eyes left her in a daze.
"Grant, are you trying to seduce me into committing a crime?"
A smile spread across Quentin Grant’s face. "If I wanted to do something to you, I could do it right now. Why would I need to seduce you?"
Nora Ainsworth didn’t like hearing that, even though he was always so brutally honest.
"There’ll come a day when you can’t." She lifted her chin slightly, her expression full of defiance.
"Tsk," he scoffed. "Unless you’re dead. And even then, I could still kiss your corpse."
Nora Ainsworth was furious. She shot up to stand, but she’d forgotten about the pain in her foot. With a yelp, she broke out in a cold sweat. "It hurts like hell!"
"Worth it." The hidden amusement in his eyes made Nora Ainsworth feel that staying here even a second longer was utterly humiliating.
"I’m going back."
He didn’t stop her. "Want the car keys?"
He was definitely saying that on purpose. Nora Ainsworth walked gingerly toward the door. Even if he were more than happy to let her drive this ridiculously flashy car, would she dare?
Running on sheer willpower, Nora Ainsworth finally made it back to the Ainsworth Residence on foot.
Tonight, everyone in her family was home.
All of them.
Seeing her limp, Mrs. Ainsworth stood up and asked, "What happened to your foot?"
"I sprained it. It’s nothing serious. I’ve already put medicine on it."
Mrs. Ainsworth nodded and helped her over to the sofa, where they sat down together.
Such a complete family, yet without a trace of warmth.
Perhaps because Mr. and Mrs. Ainsworth had been having a hard time lately, neither of them spoke. Mr. Ainsworth kept his head down, reading the newspaper, while Mrs. Ainsworth wore a lonely, desolate expression.
Nora Ainsworth wanted to ask about the bloodstains in her mother’s room. It was a weight on her mind; if she couldn’t solve this mystery, she wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.
"Mom, I want to go upstairs to rest. Can you help me?"
Mrs. Ainsworth nodded and helped her upstairs.
"Mom, I’d like to go to your room and talk." Her expression had never been so serious. In her entire life, this was a first.
Mrs. Ainsworth’s voice was unusually low. "Alright."
Once in the bedroom, Nora Ainsworth sat down beside her and said bluntly, "I saw bloodstains in this room. A lot of blood. The wastebasket was full of it. Mom, tell me, what on earth happened?"
Mrs. Ainsworth shook her head. "I’m fine. It was just from my period; I made a bit of a mess. Don’t overthink it. When you and Leon are married... if that day still comes... don’t you want to know about your father most of all? When the time comes, Mom will tell you everything."
Nora Ainsworth looked at her mother’s determined gaze. She wanted to say something, but kept her mouth shut, not daring to speak.
From that night on, Nora Ainsworth lived each day in a state of apprehension. She desperately wanted to know all the secrets.
