The Husband I Snatched Is Not Right!-Chapter 289 - 286: What Others Have, You Have Too
"But he always comes to Ze County. I wonder what keeps him so attached to this place."
"Go and see who it is. Even if they’re dead, they keep your master so preoccupied."
Yu Tingwan dreamt of these words so many times that she could recite them by heart.
There was some confusion.
Yet, these fragmented voices could piece together a story.
She tried to walk forward. Amidst the swirling fog, there indeed stood a lonely grave.
The words on the tombstone were blurry.
But she knew, it had to be her.
Yu Tingwan knew it was a dream, yet she was trapped in it, unable to wake up.
Wei Zhao was writing something when he heard a woman’s helpless sobbing.
He put down his work and walked over in large strides.
The canopy was lifted, above which hung the peace charm Wei Zhao had personally placed, swaying gently.
There were many peace charms, even under the pillow.
The young woman was once again trapped in a nightmare, her forehead covered in a fine sweat.
Wei Zhao held her in his arms, called her name, but couldn’t wake her.
He thought the peace charm would work, as Yu Tingwan didn’t have nightmares on the way back.
But...
His expression darkened as he wiped away Yu Tingwan’s tear stains, gently patting her back to soothe her.
"It’s okay, it’s all fake."
Perhaps she smelled a familiar scent, which was enough to calm the heart. The girl’s sobbing lessened, her hand tightly clutching his clothes.
After one incense stick’s time, her brows relaxed.
After two incense sticks, Wei Zhao left the room.
"Find that Daoist for me!"
Bao Pu was thrown over by Shunzi.
Just as he was about to curse from the pain, before he could get up, someone stood in front of him.
Wei Zhao looked down at him.
The peace charm was thrown at him.
"Explain."
"Why doesn’t the charm, which you claim can ward off evil spirits, work?"
Bao Pu: ???
He looked at the charm, all intact, not damaged, nor soaked by water.
He didn’t yet know Wei Zhao’s identity, as he had been brought here in the dark by Shunzi.
He suspiciously eyed the man in front of him.
The man’s expression was extremely cold.
Bao Pu: "Young master, you can question my Dao heart, but not my skills!"
Wei Zhao gazed steadily at him: "But it didn’t work."
"She still had nightmares."
Bao Pu was indignant: "Impossible!"
"Even if someone cast witchcraft on her, it wouldn’t affect her."
Bao Pu dared not meet Wei Zhao’s eyes.
After all, those eyes had fought their way through battlefields, exuding a powerful aura.
He muttered quietly.
"Unless she committed some wrongdoing, causing her to have guilty nightmares."
No, that couldn’t be right.
Yu Tingwan’s eyes were clean; she couldn’t be a wrongdoer.
"Maybe it’s not nightmares at all; maybe it’s real experiences. I once had my money pouch stolen and remembered it for ten years. Perhaps the madam has something too sorrowful to forget, who knows."
He stated confidently: "Anyway, you can’t blame the charm."
—
The officials visiting the Wei Family were ever more plentiful; Wei Zhao was selective in whom he saw.
For those he didn’t want to see but to whom he had to show some respect, he’d make a brief appearance, drink a cup of tea, then feign discomfort.
Who dared to tire him out, promptly and wisely left.
Perhaps because of the exhausting journey, Yu Tingwan became lazy and hadn’t left Lan Garden for several days.
Neither she nor Wei Zhao mentioned the nightmares.
After staying at Duke Shun Mansion, her days were indeed leisurely. Unlike other new brides, she didn’t have to serve her mother-in-law meals or attend morning and evening greetings. Whether Wei Zhao arranged it this way or Ning Suxuan didn’t want to see her, it was unknown.
Regardless, Yu Tingwan enjoyed her freedom.
Until, Tan Jiang came in from outside.
"Madam, the Nanny Ru from the head wife’s side came with a message. Do you wish to see her?"
The meaning was clear. If Yu Tingwan didn’t wish to see her, she would inform them.
Yu Tingwan wanted to nurture her relationship with Wei Zhao.
No matter what happened, Ning Suxuan was Wei Zhao’s biological mother; this relationship couldn’t be severed.
She sat in her chair, writing a family letter, intending to send it back to Ze County later. Upon hearing this, she put down her pen, her eyes gentle and affectionate: "Please invite her in."
Tan Jiang received the instruction and went out. Soon she returned, bringing in a dignified old woman.
Nanny Ru curtseyed to Yu Tingwan.
"The head wife is going to the temple tomorrow to pray for the heir, and she asked me to see if you wish to join."
Yu Tingwan was about to speak.
But someone spoke quicker.
"She won’t go."
Wei Zhao, returning from guest visits, sat in a wheelchair pushed in by Shunzi.
"She needs to stay to watch over me, it’s inconvenient for her to leave."
Nanny Ru dared not continue, and was about to withdraw.
Yu Tingwan: "What time is the departure tomorrow, and do I need to prepare anything?"
This meant she intended to go.
After Nanny Ru left,
Yu Tingwan said to Wei Zhao: "I know my limits. If things don’t go well this time, you can stop me next time, and I won’t go."
"I’ve heard that the temple outside Shangjing is surrounded by peach blossoms. I would like to see it."
She always needed to get out.
————
The next day.
Yu Tingwan rose early. Just as she reached the side gate of Duke Shun Mansion, Ning Suxuan was already waiting.
If it were someone else, having a mother-in-law wait would terrify them into apologizing.
Yu Tingwan was not like that.
She walked over.
"Mother-in-law."
The young woman held a paper bag in her hand. Inside were steaming hot buns.
She asked: "Would you like one?"
Ning Suxuan looked at her, her expression unreadable: "Not had breakfast?"
Yu Tingwan: "No."
She feared being late.
Ning Suxuan didn’t speak, nor did she board the carriage.
Nanny Ru smiled: "Heir’s wife, take your time eating, we won’t set off late. It won’t delay anything, it’s just that it’s quite a distance to the temple outside, and the head wife thought it best to set out early to catch the vegetarian meals."
Yu Tingwan decided not to be polite.
She ate more quickly than usual but didn’t wolf it down.
Occasionally, she’d take a sip of the warm water from a bamboo tube.
Ning Suxuan initially lowered her eyes, pondering, but unconsciously her gaze fell on Yu Tingwan’s tender face, then down to the string of golden beads at her waist.
Her tone was mild.
"The temple is atop a mountain. To show sincerity of heart, climbing is required; heavy jewelry may become a burden."
Yu Tingwan blinked.
Nanny Ru said: "Heir’s wife doesn’t know, the temple doesn’t allow carriages up the mountain. Previously, a Wang Family woman became too exhausted halfway. She couldn’t go on nor turn back, and in the end, was carried up by turns of old women."
Yu Tingwan understood: "How tall is it?"
Nanny Ru quoted a figure.
"It’s not much."
She was actually quite strong.
Ning Suxuan kept watching her.
Nanny Ru had expressed it subtly.
In fact, it was a new bride from the Wang Family who initially wanted the servants to carry her up the mountain in a chair.
Mrs. Wang firmly refused, fearing the Buddha’s punishment. But the bride acted foolishly, complaining that since her mother-in-law wasn’t her husband’s mother, just a stepmother, she was being treated harshly. The conflict escalated horribly.
Ning Suxuan didn’t know Yu Tingwan’s temperament.
Such matters needed clarification in advance to avoid unexpected delays. This Yu woman was dainty and small; her strength seemed lacking, yet she didn’t seem to take the warning to heart.
Yu Tingwan actually understood, but seeing Ning Suxuan still looking at her, she thought she must have misunderstood.
The girl hesitated.
"Mother-in-law, if you become too tired to walk, and if I still have strength, I’d be willing to take turns with Nanny Ru and Tan Jiang to carry you on my back."
Ning Suxuan: ???
Yu Tingwan spoke gently: "Alright then, whatever others have, you will have too."
