"Okay, time for bed," Chantelle said, giving Kane a quick wink. "Don’t forget to wake up early tomorrow."

Kane understood what Chantelle meant with that wink. He took Railer’s hand, and the two of them started to head out.

But at the door, Railer stopped. He held onto the doorframe and looked back. "Mommy, you won’t leave me behind again, will you?"

Chantelle felt her heart sink. His words struck a tender spot, and guilt flooded her instantly.

"I don’t want to lose you again, Mommy. Can you promise you won’t leave me alone?" He lowered his head and stared at the floor. He looked so small, and so sad.

Even Kane couldn’t take it anymore. Seeing Railer like that made him feel really sad too.

Railer was his beloved brother. He couldn’t just leave him behind while they went to Carcosa.

He wanted to take Rai there too, to show him the place he used to live. And show off his cool, high-tech room.

With that, Kane gave Chantelle a pleading look. She paused for a moment, then slowly shook her head.

"Rai, Mommy’s not abandoning you. We’re just going away to take care of something. We’ll be back soon, I promise," Kane said, trying to comfort him once they were in their room. He could see how disappointed Railer was.

Railer didn’t say a word. He just stared at Kane with his eyes full of pain.

It felt like he was being forced to accept being left behind all over again.

Kane’s eyes turned red as he fought back his tears. The way Railer looked at him made it hard to breathe.

"You heard us, didn’t you?" he asked softly.

Railer nodded slowly. "I only heard the part about you going back to Carcosa."

Kane let out a small breath. "We’re just visiting someone. We’ll be back really soon."

"Then why can’t I come too? Am I not Mommy’s son?"

"But..." Kane hesitated. He didn’t know how to explain the situation. Railer was Chantelle’s son too, but his godfather didn’t even know who Railer was.

"Actually... you just don’t want me there, right?" Railer’s voice started to shake. "You think I’m a burden. You both want to leave me behind..."

His words trailed off as he began to cry.

Kane had never seen Railer so vulnerable before. Rai was usually calm, like a grown-up. But now, he was crying. Kane didn’t know what to do.

"Rai, don’t cry. I’ll take you with me, okay?"

"Really?" Railer’s eyes lit up.

Kane patted his chest. "Don’t worry. I’ll sneak you along. Mommy won’t even notice."

That night, Kane shared the news with Stephanie. "Steph, I’ve got something great to tell you!"

"Did Mommy finally forgive Daddy?" Stephanie asked. To her, the only good news worth getting excited about was if Daniel and Chantelle were finally getting back together.

It would mean all her efforts had paid off.

"No, not that," Kane said quickly. "It’s about our godfather! He’s awake! Mommy’s taking us to Carcosa to see him. Make sure you wake up early tomorrow, she’ll come get you."

"He’s really awake?" Stephanie sprang up in bed, and her eyes shone excitedly.

Just then, Daniel walked into her room to check if she was tucked in. He stopped in the doorway and stared at her with a puzzled look.

When she didn’t respond, Kane assumed she was just too happy to say anything. He ended the call with a smile.

He knew Stephanie was the one who loved their godfather the most.

"Steph, are you asleep yet?" Daniel sat on the bed and gently placed his hand on her forehead. He only felt relieved after making sure she didn’t have a fever.

Stephanie’s heart was racing. She didn’t know why she felt the need to hide from Daniel, but her body reacted before she could think.

Something inside her said she couldn’t tell him about the trip to Carcosa or that they were going to see their godfather.

"How is Mommy doing today?"
