Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 730: Is She Still Alive?
Vanessa Sterling avoided Jasper Jones’ gaze, pressing her lips tightly as if she didn’t know how to respond.
Jasper Jones walked up to her, took a deep breath, and explained, "I’m already in my early thirties. My grandfather has always hoped for me to marry soon. I can wait for you, but he’s been in poor health recently, so..."
Vanessa lowered her eyes, contemplating for a couple of seconds, then said, "Brother Jones, you know my current situation. You’ve done so much for me, I’m really grateful. Actually, I hope you can return to your normal life, find a normal girl... at least you won’t have to hide out here with me.’
Jasper Jones frowned, "Vanessa, do you still not understand my feelings? I’m willing to live here with you, I want to be with you forever. I’ve been really happy these past months with you. I know your past, so I’ve always been careful not to pressure you into making decisions. But I... still can’t help but want to change our current relationship, Vanessa, I want to marry you."
Vanessa turned away awkwardly, but Jasper reached out, pulling her back to face him, "Vanessa, I’m not sure if you like me, but I know you don’t dislike me. I feel like we’ve been getting along really well these past months, but you seem to be deliberately avoiding me. I don’t know what you’re avoiding or worrying about?"
"I..." Vanessa didn’t know how to explain what she felt.
She knew that if Jasper was willing to be with her, it was her luck.
But she wasn’t sure if this companionship counted as love. She feared she might let Jasper down, even more, that she might hold him back in life. She had nothing, and couldn’t give Jasper anything, not even a girl’s chastity...
Moreover, she was currently living under the identity of a dead person.
After a few moments of silence, Jasper softly asked, "Are you worried that I’ll leave?"
Vanessa shook her head gently, took a deep breath, and said, "Brother Jones, I don’t even have a legitimate identity in society right now; I’m just a dead person. If you stay with me, you’ll lose so much of the vibrancy you could have had in life because of my status."
Jasper smiled with understanding, "So that’s what’s on your mind. You might not realize it, but it was only after I met you that life felt vibrant. What status? That’s not important. We’ve been doing fine all this time, haven’t we?"
Vanessa pursed her lips awkwardly, saying quietly, "If you marry me, we can’t even get a marriage certificate."
Jasper chuckled, "Who says you must have a marriage certificate to be married? It’s just a piece of paper. Besides, it’s all in my favor, because even if you wanted to leave, you couldn’t. But I’ll never leave you, so a marriage certificate doesn’t matter to us."
Vanessa thought for a few seconds, then said, "... I agree, but if you ever meet a girl you like more, you can marry her anytime. I won’t blame you, and..."
Jasper interrupted her, "Don’t be silly, what nonsense are you talking about? Do you think I’m the type to abandon someone?"
Vanessa smiled, and Jasper confirmed with her again, "So you’re willing to marry me?"
Vanessa nodded slightly, a bit shy, and Jasper joyfully pulled her into his arms, "You finally agreed!"
"Thank you," Vanessa slowly lifted her hands and embraced Jasper.
Jasper smiled, looking down at her, "Once spring comes, let’s have a wedding at the beach and invite those from the shop."
Vanessa looked up and asked, "What about your grandfather?"
Jasper replied, "Grandfather’s age limits his travel, it’s inconvenient for him. I’ll drive you back to see him during the New Year."
Vanessa nodded, still feeling a bit shy and uneasy with the sudden change in their relationship.
Jasper, however, was in a good mood. He released her and said, "I’ll make breakfast, you sit and watch some TV."
Vanessa stood in place, watching Jasper busy himself by the kitchen counter, and suddenly the burden she felt on her heart seemed to lift.
Although she had lived with Jasper for some time and knew Jasper liked her, she hadn’t dared to face this issue.
Now that she had made such a decision, she felt much more relieved.
As far as she was concerned, at least for now, Jasper liked her. She agreed to him, and Jasper was surely happy too.
Should he grow tired of this life later, or weary of her, or meet someone he was meant to be with, she would also choose to let him go.
After all, he didn’t belong here; if he chose to stay, she’d live contentedly with him, but if he decided to leave one day, she wouldn’t resent him.
For days on end, it rained incessantly, and the fog was always thick over the sea due to the rain. There were significantly fewer visitors at the seaside, and certainly, no one would bring a canvas to the beach on a rainy day to paint.
Miles Sterling grew a bit impatient with waiting, but he had no idea when or where the girl would appear.
In his indecision, he directly called Audrey Sutton.
Audrey Sutton was quite surprised to receive a call from Miles Sterling.
As soon as the call connected, Miles Sterling got straight to the point, "Is she still alive?"
Audrey Sutton froze for a moment, her heart momentarily flustered, but she quickly calmed down, analyzing that Miles Sterling’s question meant he wasn’t sure if Vanessa Sterling was alive.
She continued playing dumb, replying to Miles Sterling, "Who? What are you talking about?"
Miles Sterling solemnly added, "Vanessa Sterling, she’s still alive, isn’t she? Did you help her?"
Faced with Miles Sterling’s pressing questions, Audrey Sutton felt a bit unsure, but she maintained her composure, "Are you crazy? Didn’t you look at the missing persons list yourself? I’d hope Vanessa was alive too! What do you mean by questioning me? Are you nuts?"
Hearing Audrey Sutton’s words, Miles Sterling began to doubt his own suspicions again.
Before he could ask anything more, Audrey Sutton’s indignant voice came over the phone again, "I say, aren’t you the one with problems? How did you treat Vanessa when she was alive? Did you let her have any happy days? Now that she’s dead, you start becoming suspicious and don’t believe it? Do you want her alive to continue suffering your abuse? I think death might be happier for her than staying with you, you don’t deserve to mention Vanessa!"
After saying this, both of them almost simultaneously hung up the phone.
Miles Sterling was angry, even though he knew Audrey Sutton was telling the truth...
