There was a pharmacy nearby, and it wasn’t long before the delivery arrived.
Chen Kai brought the medicine to Lu Jingyan, “The medicine’s here, do you want to take it now?”
Lu Jingyan, who felt uncomfortable from drinking, shook her head, “Later.”
“Should we go to the hospital?” Seeing Lu Jingyan not responding, Chen Kai added, “Or shall I take you home?”
Disturbed by Chen Kai, Lu Jingyan had a bit of a headache; she waved her hand dismissively, “Go have fun, don’t worry about me. I’ll stay here a bit longer, and if I really feel bad, I’ll call the driver to take me home.”
Chen Kai, “Okay, if you really feel bad, call me anytime.”
Lu Jingyan nodded in acknowledgment.
Chen Kai stood up, holding his glass.
As Chen Kai prepared to leave, Lu Jingyan looked at him, wanted to ask what Sheng Xian had said earlier — whether it was out of his way or inconvenient to buy — but she swallowed her words before they left her mouth.
She really was odd.
Why did she care so much whether Sheng Xian bought her medicine or not?
Her intention was to make him cry.
Yet, somehow, she ended up getting troubled here first.
Lu Jingyan felt that it was probably because she was sick; she was starting to get a bit sentimental.
There really was no need for that.
But still, Lu Jingyan felt very annoyed, annoyed enough that she wanted to go out for a smoke.
…
Miss Lu always did as she pleased; wanting a cigarette, she emerged from the nearby supermarket ten minutes later, tearing open a pack of women’s cigarettes, pulling one out, and lighting it with her lighter.
It was quite cold outside; she found a spot sheltered from the wind, leaned her head against a pillar, and slowly blew smoke rings into the air.
A tender voice came from nearby, “Mommy, my head hurts.”
Lu Jingyan turned her head and saw a little girl in a red puffer jacket, about six or seven years old.
“Why does your head hurt?” The little girl’s mother, standing beside her, heard this and reached out to feel her forehead. Seeing she had no fever, she pulled up her daughter’s collar and removed her own scarf from around her neck, wrapping it around the little girl’s neck, “Maybe you didn’t dress warmly enough. Remember to wear more tomorrow; it’s easy to get sick when the seasons change, and the temperature varies a lot from morning to night.”
The little girl obediently murmured an agreement.
The mother patted her hair and took her hand as they walked on.
After some distance, the mother squatted down, “Are you tired? Let Mommy carry you.”
The mother carried the little girl on her back, moving much faster than when they were just holding hands; soon, they were out of sight.
Lu Jingyan took a while to avert her gaze, put out her cigarette in the ashtray on a nearby trash can, and then took out another cigarette with one hand.
As she placed the cigarette in her mouth and reached for her lighter, a hand extended in front of her, pulling the cigarette out of her mouth.
Lu Jingyan frowned and after a moment, looked up.
The person was standing right in front of her; she didn’t look up very high and saw his hand.
The wristwatch on his wrist, although she had only seen it a few times, she recognized it immediately.
The hand was beautiful, defined, with slender fingers holding a slim lady’s cigarette — the scene strangely alluring.
Lu Jingyan swallowed and, looking at Sheng Xian, reached out her hand, “Give it back.”
Sheng Xian didn’t say a word and just threw the cigarette into the nearby trash can.
Lu Jingyan took out the cigarette pack, but before she could get a cigarette, Sheng Xian had already grabbed the pack, and before she could even look at him, the pack too was thrown into the trash can.
“…”
Lu Jingyan stared at the trash can, a swear word stuck in her throat, unsure whether or not to curse.
A gust of cold wind made Lu Jingyan shiver uncontrollably, making her sniffle.
Sheng Xian moved a few steps to the side, “Aren’t you going inside?”
Lu Jingyan glanced at the brilliantly lit restaurant nearby, faintly hearing cheering from the second floor. She shook her head, “I’m not going in.”
Sheng Xian didn’t say anything, just stood in front of her without moving.
Lu Jingyan looked up, puzzled, “Aren’t you going in?”
Sheng Xian responded with a faint “Hmm.”
Maybe it was the illness sapping her will to tease him, or maybe it was something else, but the usually talkative Lu Jingyan didn’t speak.
It was really too cold outside, and Lu Jingyan, already suffering from a serious cold, didn’t want to make it worse. After a silent standoff, she stood up straight, “You go in, I’m planning to go home.”
“Someone picking you up?” Sheng Xian asked.
Lu Jingyan took out her phone, “I’ll call the driver now.”
Before she could find the driver’s number, Sheng Xian said, “Let’s go.”
Lu Jingyan looked up, “Huh?”
Sheng Xian said, “I’ll give you a ride home.”
Lu Jingyan didn’t move, “Aren’t you here for Chen Kai’s birthday?”
“Been there.” Sheng Xian’s car was parked by the roadside. He walked over and opened the car door.
After waiting for a while, seeing that Lu Jingyan hadn’t come over, he asked, “Are you getting in or not?”
“Yes.” Lu Jingyan nodded and walked over, getting into the car.
…
Sheng Xian started the car, pressed the accelerator to hit the road, and after a thought, turned the car’s heater up two degrees.
Lu Jingyan usually holds her liquor well, but maybe due to the sickness or possibly because she hadn’t eaten much that evening, sitting in the car with the warm air blowing, she felt a bit drowsy.
She didn’t sleep on the way, but her awareness wasn’t completely lucid either.
When the car stopped in front of her house, Sheng Xian called her twice, and she slowly opened her eyes.
She was a bit sluggish, her brain a bit slow to respond. She looked at Sheng Xian, dizzily leaning forward, fixating on his lips for a while, and said, “I want to infect you with my cold.”
Sheng Xian’s lips twitched, frozen for three seconds, then he looked away.
Lu Jingyan leaned more forcibly, nearly her entire upper body falling into his lap, “It’s your fault for not buying me medicine.”
Sheng Xian adjusted the seat backward a bit, creating some distance between them.
Lu Jingyan muttered softly, “Not buying medicine is one thing, but you couldn’t even tell me to drink more hot water.”
“…”
The way the young lady spoke sounded quite pitiful.
As if she had suffered a great injustice.
Sheng Xian pursed his lips, and after a while, he said, “I bought it.”
His voice was low, and Lu Jingyan didn’t catch it, “What?”
“I bought it,” he repeated.
It took Lu Jingyan a few seconds to understand what he said, and without thinking, she scoffed, “You’re lying, Chen Kai asked you to bring medication, and you didn’t bring anything.”
Sheng Xian: “…”
“Setting an example, but you’re full of lies!” As Lu Jingyan grumbled, she pushed the car door open and got out.
…
When Lu Jingyan got home and was just changing her shoes, Aunt Sun, hearing the noise, hurried over, “Miss Lu, are you sick?”
Lu Jingyan was half-drunk, a bit slow to react, but still could make out the concern in Aunt Sun’s voice, “How did you know I was sick?”
“The medicine.” Aunt Sun held up a bag of medicine. “It was a delivery to our house this afternoon, didn’t you order it?”
