You Shouldn't Have Said That

'Moreover, the distance between the fortresses seems to be shrinking. But that makes sense since we're moving towards the center. So the distance should inevitably lessen. But whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen.' Hearing this, Christopher almost rubbed his chin but stopped himself at the last moment.

This was indeed something to take note of, and he wasn't sure his subordinates could handle it themselves since he couldn't ascertain why it was happening either. Though, he had a sneaking suspicion that it had something to do with why the blizzard got so big.

As such, he decided that he'd look into it.

"Let's take a small break." He said and sat down cross-legged.

Seeing this, Azure sat opposite him and also sat down cross-legged. Her shield changed shape to become a round shield that hung on her back and she placed her sword across her lap.

Prism just sat down in a reflection near the two.

'Norn. Let's get busy.' Christopher commanded and he felt a sense of agreement from the weapon.

He closed his eyes, but the artificial tapestry of fate which he created had turned even more visible to him.

It didn't take him long to see an issue though.

He noticed an external force that was intentionally preventing certain threads from being observed and read. Seeing this, Christopher frowned.

'That's not good.' He thought as he pushed his will forward and observed this strange force. But to his amazement, the moment he began observing it, he noticed that he was being observed as well.

Or that's what he thought initially.

Upon closer inspection, it seemed as though the force was aware of his presence, but couldn't quite 'see' him. Christopher attributed this to his mask.

'Hm, if I make a move now then whatever is causing this interference will become wary.' He mused.

'Then again, it already knows that I'm here, it just can't trace me.' Christopher wasn't particularly scared. The only thing he felt could threaten him in this place was the will of the Paragon which seemed constrained to the center of the hidden realm. He couldn't care less about the will of some ancient automatic defense system.

Granted, he couldn't be careless either, so he set up a precaution first.

With a thought, he increased the effectiveness of his mask and his presence suddenly became illusory.

Azure and Prism who were currently with him were startled. A moment ago, they were simply staying next to their master, but a moment later, they were wondering why they were there!

However, because they weren't the ones he was trying to hide his presence from, it didn't take long for them to remember why they were there, but it's safe to say that they were adequately shaken.

It's a different sort of terror to not just forget someone was there but to forget having interacted with them at all, no matter how short.

Prism was a bit better off since she had fallen victim to the effects of Faceless, which caused her and everyone else to completely forget ever having interacted with Christopher at all points, so this wasn't that bad.

However, Azure was a bit more shaken, but she was more resilient than anything else, and she regained her composure quickly. However, this made the two of them curious.

It wasn't the same as any of his random experiments, so it was obvious he wanted to do something, what could force him to be sneaky to do something? Not that it made them think of him any less, they were just curious.

Christopher, the instigator, was once again observing the will that was causing an interference. When he increased the effectiveness of his mask, he noticed that its vigilance dropped considerably, presumably feeling like he'd left.

Christopher had a clear-cut way to do this, but he suddenly had an idea.

'Hey, can you hear me?' He didn't exactly 'speak', but simply conveyed his intentions using his will.

'...' The opposing will didn't respond, but he felt its vigilance spike, yet it couldn't discover him no matter how hard it tried

'Calm down, I just wanna talk, I don't want to fight. Though that can change depending on how you decide to respond.' He said calmly and the vigilance of the thing didn't fade, but he sensed that it was about to respond, but he discovered something curious.

It was the vigilance of the will. When its vigilance increased and it tried to sense him, the way it did reminded him of a radar. This didn't mean much at first, but it reminded Christopher of how an automated construct would try to sense something.

'... Identify yourself.' A robotic voice that reminded him of the System, though this one was more masculine, spoke.

'Hm, you're an artificial construct? Interesting.' Christopher mumbled.

'Identify yourself.' The voice spoke again, more forceful this time.

'Hm, how hasty. Well, you may refer to me as the Dreamer, that's about as much as you're gonna get.' Christopher replied.

'State your purpose.' It said immediately.

'That's none of your business.' Christopher retorted.

'You have forcefully imprinted a tapestry of Fate within this place without permission. Moreover, you are attempting to pry into things that are meant to remain hidden, you're interfering with many rules with these actions alone. As the Warden of this place, it is in fact my business.' The voice said with an edge of finality that both amused and irritated Christopher, but he managed to learn a few things from that statement alone.

First of all, it seemed like there was a set of rules this place carried, but seeing as no one had been informed of them upon entering the place, it meant that whatever put these rules up couldn't be bothered to tell anyone or no one was expected to have the capacity to break them in the first place.

Moreover, it said that he was attempting to pry into things that are meant to remain hidden, which he assumed was what the 'Warden' as the being called itself was stopping him from looking into. He wasn't surprised that the hidden realm had some secrets, but he was curious as to whether or not they were being hidden for the sake of being hidden, or they were part of something larger that he wasn't supposed to know under any circumstances.

It made him think back on his theory that the will of the Paragon was in fact looking for the perfect vessel to possess, and the trials were just a cover. That would be something worth hiding, right?

Then there was the Warden itself, Christopher found it interesting that there was an automaton that seemed to have been granted authority over the entire hidden realm. However, if he broke some rules by creating a tapestry of fate, why hadn't the Automaton destroyed it?

Well, he had a theory for that as well. Since he had created the artificial tapestry to blend in with the framework of the hidden realm, he had essentially made it to be a part of the hidden realm to prevent it from being tampered with.

With this, it was easy to infer that the automaton couldn't remove the tapestry as doing so would most likely damage the realm. After all, it was shown just what could happen if Christopher resisted the will of the realm with his, so saying the realm destroying a 'part of itself' would be catastrophic wasn't a farfetched theory.

'Interesting. Well sir Warden, you can't exactly expect me to follow rules I wasn't aware of in the first place.' Christopher said casually.

'Illogical argument. You most definitely felt the resistance when you created the tapestry as well as the damage it was causing to this hidden realm. Moreover, you do not need to be 'told' how to behave when in another person's domain.' The Warden countered, and Christopher had to admit that it was a valid statement, not that he cared.

'Alright, say you're correct, what about it? What secrets are you hiding that I'm not allowed to pry? After all, your master is dead, so what is so important that it is to be hidden from us challengers? Unless, we aren't challengers to begin with?' Christopher didn't beat around the bush and asked directly.

'I will not answer such a question. Instead, I ask you to cancel the tapestry you have created immediately.' Christopher chuckled.

'Oh? Did I strike a nerve? And what will you do if I refuse?' He asked, almost mocking.

'Your forces who call themselves the Genesis Corps are still within this place. And unlike you, they cannot escape my perception. Considering how well-equipped they are, if wager you wouldn't want any harm to befall them. But you are far away from them, and I have more than a few means to massacre them. So 'Dreamer', if you refuse to comply, I will kill your people. That should be enough of an incentive I'd say.' Immediately it finished speaking, the amused look on Christopher's face faded to one of utter coldness.

'You shouldn't have said that, you really should not have said that.'
