Chapter 56: 56. Silvermist Lake.

Now that the Sylvan Glade had been reclaimed successfully, Aaron and his companions stopped at a clearing to finalize their preparations for the journey to Silvermist Lake.

Meanwhile, Aurora inspected her supplies and her fingers traced the edge of her remaining purification vials. "This will have to be enough. We’ve used most of what we had in the glade."

Aaron nodded with a steady look on his face. "Very well, I guess it’s time for us to move now."

Kain approached Aaron with his warriors behind him. Everyone’s confidence had been renewed and they couldn’t wait to help Aaron as much as they could.

"We’re ready to follow you, Lord Aaron. Whatever lies ahead, we’re prepared to face it together."

Aaron smiled and placed a hand on Kain’s shoulder. "Good. We’ll need everyone to be at their best."

The men nodded with confidence and with nothing else to do, they set off to their next destination.

As they approached the lake, the forest around them grew darker and the air became thick and heavy with an acrid scent that made Kain wrinkle his nose.

"Ugh, it smells awful around here," Kain said as he covered his nose with his hand.

"It’s coming from the corrupted lake," Aurora explained. "The corrupted mana in the lake is floating into the air and seeping into the soil, poisoning everything around it."

Kain’s men glanced around while observing the bad state the trees around them were in when suddenly, Aaron motioned for the group to halt when he noticed something moving in the bushes.

Glimmer sniffed the air, and her fiery fur bristled as well when, suddenly, a pack of amphibious creatures burst out of the nearby marshland.

They had slimy, elongated bodies that glistened with miasma, and their glowing green eyes were locked on Aaron and everyone else.

"Hold the line!" Aaron shouted while drawing his sword. "Glimmer, distract them! Blizzard, freeze the marsh!"

Glimmer barked and leaped into action. She weaved between the creatures and struck at them with a burst of flames while Blizzard unleashed a frozen domain that froze the ground beneath the creatures, limiting their movement in the process.

Meanwhile, Thunder charged forward, and his lightning strike scattered the pack, giving Kain and his men enough time to move in and deal with the creatures as swiftly as possible.

The battle was swift and the creatures fell one after the other. Aaron surveyed the area one more time before ordering everyone to keep moving.

A few minutes later, the group arrived at the edge of Silvermist Lake, just as the sun began to set. The elves who were familiar with how the lake looked before it became corrupted, gasped at the sight before them.

The once-crystal clear waters were now blackened by a thick, oily film that completely covered the surface of the lake, and seeing it made a few elves hurl.

The air around the lake was filled with the foul stench of death and faint ripples occasionally disturbed the unnaturally still water.

Aurora stared at the lake with a sad expression on her face as she recalled the last time she visited this lake with her family a few years ago. "I used to come here with my family," She explained. "Back then, the lake was beautiful, clear, calm, and full of life, but now, it’s..."

Aaron placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder and asked. "Purifying the entire lake won’t be easy, do you think you can purify a part of the lake first?"

Aurora frowned slightly before replying. "I can, but it’ll take time, and I don’t know how long the effects will last if we don’t purify the entire lake."

"Do what you can, we’ll handle the rest," Aaron replied before turning towards Diana and Kain. "Diana, Kain, set up a perimeter. We’ll need to protect Her Highness while she works."

Diana and Kain nodded in understanding and immediately sprung into action.

Aurora knelt by the water’s edge and began to pour a purification vial into the lake.

The liquid shimmered as it spread to create a small circle of clean and clear water. The oily film recoiled and receded as the purification worked gradually and a huge smile appeared on the lips of the elven warriors who were watching from a distance.

"It’s working!!" A male elf couldn’t conceal his joy at seeing the lake slowly returning back to its former glory.

However, Aurora didn’t share the same excitement as her people. "It’s working, but it’s slow. I’ll need to keep applying more purification liquids," She said with a strained voice before emptying more vials.

But while she worked, the water around her began to stir and dark shapes began to move slowly beneath the surface.

"Something is coming, get ready!" Diana warned while drawing her sword.

Aaron positioned himself near Aurora while his beasts flanked him as well. "Thunder, keep them at a distance. Blizzard, I need you to freeze anything that gets too close, and Glimmer...?"

The little fox turned towards him while tilting her head cutely. "You know what to do."

Aaron said with a smile and Glimmer’s face turned sinister.

She immediately returned her gaze back to the lake, growling menacingly while igniting her body in red flames.

The first creature emerged from the water and everyone tightened their grip on their weapons. The creature was like a mutated, serpentine beast with glowing red eyes and jagged fins.

It lunged at Aurora, but Aaron intercepted it with a swift strike, and Thunder followed up with a Lightning strike that forced it back into the water.

Now, more creatures were emerging from the lake, but the elven warriors held their positions and continued attacking.

The clashing sounds of battle filled the air but Kain shouted after noticing that the beasts were having the upper hand. "We can’t hold them back forever!!!"

Hearing this, Aurora swiftly poured a new vial into the lake and yelled back. "Almost done!!!"

As the purification began to take effect, the water near the center of the lake erupted and a massive aquatic beast emerged.

Its body was covered in jagged, dark scales and its glowing green eyes zeroed in on the group. Once it had taken a good look at those who were disturbing its peace, the huge beast suddenly let out a deafening roar that sent waves rippling across the lake.
