Chapter 121: Chapter 26: The Demon in A Class

The mountain peaks in the inner circle of the Five Elements True Spirit Sect were occupied by its various departments. The flatlands between the peaks had all been cultivated into Spirit Fields and Spirit Medicine Gardens, with Qi Cultivation Stage disciples from the Inner and Outer Sects residing among them.

Sect Disciples at Foundation Establishment and above carved their Cave Mansions into the outer circle’s mountain peaks, with locations determined by the concentration of Spirit Veins.

The Household Affairs Hall was not among the more powerful departments, specializing only in the trivial matters between disciples of the Inner and Outer Sects. Its mountain peak was somewhat low, but it occupied a vast expanse of land.

However, since it managed all personnel for miscellaneous tasks throughout the Five Elements True Spirit Sect and thus had ample manpower, the Household Affairs Hall was built to be quite magnificent and stately.

Yang Jing entered the main hall of the Household Affairs Hall.

A new batch of disciples had just been admitted, so the hall was already crowded and boisterous.

Yang Jing waited in line for over a quarter of an hour before it was his turn.

"Jade Talisman. What’s your business?"

An Inner Sect Disciple in a Cyan Daoist Robe asked lazily.

Within the Five Elements True Spirit Sect, Daoist Robe color distinguished disciples of the Inner and Outer Sects. Outer Disciples wore white Daoist Robes, while the Daoist Robes of Inner Sect Disciples were cyan. Only after reaching Foundation Establishment were there no requirements for the color of one’s attire.

The distinction between the Inner and Outer Sects was clear at a glance.

Neither servile nor overbearing, Yang Jing presented his Jade Token.

"I am Yang Jing. I would like to apply for Beast Tokens for my three Guardian Beasts."

The Inner Sect Disciple had been nonchalant, but his expression changed in an instant—like a chameleon’s—the moment he took the Jade Token and glanced at it.

"So it’s Junior Brother Yang of A Class! Why didn’t you say so sooner? Applying for Beast Tokens, you say? A simple matter! Please, follow me."

He immediately hung a "service suspended" sign in the window and eagerly led Yang Jing deeper into the Miscellaneous Affairs Hall.

There were various administrative offices within the Miscellaneous Affairs Hall.

The disciple led Yang Jing directly to the office of the Steward in charge of Demon-related matters.

A long line of Outer Disciples was already waiting outside. The Inner Sect Disciple led Yang Jing straight past them, pushed open the door, and walked into the office.

"Steward Li, this is Junior Brother Yang from A Class. He’s here to apply for three Demon Tokens."

At that moment, Steward Li was sitting in a grand armchair, sipping tea while reading a Golden Volume. Beside him, a Chengcha was in the middle of recording a Demon’s characteristics: its Demon Qi, species, and appearance.

Steward Li was clearly much better informed than the Inner Sect Disciple from the window.

"So, it’s Junior Brother Yang of A Class! I heard you defeated a Late Stage Qi Cultivation disciple, also from A Class, with just two sword strikes. What a pity! I was busy with official duties at the time and missed the chance to witness your magnificent style!"

He put down the Golden Volume and said to Yang Jing with great enthusiasm.

"You’re too kind, Senior Brother."

Yang Jing quickly demurred. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the other disciple—the one there to register a Demon—staring at him, wide-eyed with shock.

What a coincidence. He never thought the person registering a Demon at that moment would be Zhang Yanhao.

Zhang Yanhao had expected a gap to form between them after they joined the Five Elements True Spirit Sect, but he never imagined it would grow so large, so quickly.

The name of his Shangyang Zhang Family was worthless in the Five Elements True Spirit Sect. He had only managed to scrape into C Class by virtue of his Spirit Root. Many of his classmates came from Golden Core Clans, and as someone from the Three Border Kingdoms, he was ostracized and bullied almost as soon as he settled in.

And yet, Yang Jing, who was also from the Chen Kingdom, was being treated with respect by a figure as important as a Steward in the Household Affairs Hall.

The stark contrast left Zhang Yanhao so ashamed and mortified he could hardly look up.

"Junior Brother Wang, take care of Junior Brother Yang first,"

Steward Li said indifferently, glancing at Zhang Yanhao.

Zhang Yanhao didn’t dare protest and immediately moved to recall his Leopard Demon to its Beast Taming Bag.

"Senior Brother Li, that won’t be necessary," Yang Jing said. "Junior Brother Zhang is from the same region as me, so please, let him finish. Besides, I have a few questions I was hoping to ask you."

"Oh, a fellow countryman of Junior Brother Yang’s! Well then, let him finish up. Junior Brother Yang, I happen to have some excellent tea. We can have a cup while we wait."

Steward Li readily agreed.

The two of them, along with the Inner Sect Disciple from the window, sat down to drink tea and chat.

What Yang Jing wanted to ask about were the Demons that had affiliated themselves with the Five Elements True Spirit Sect. These Demons either had peaceful temperaments or held grudges against the Demon Court, which was why they had left it to seek refuge with the Five Elements True Spirit Sect.

He was quite interested in these Demons. Perhaps some of them had unique Talents and could be taken as Guardian Beasts.

"So, Junior Brother Yang is interested in Guardian Beasts. We have quite a few Demons affiliated with our Five Elements True Spirit Sect. For some of the low-level ones, you can just use Merit Points to exchange for a corresponding Token. With that Token, you can go to their habitat and will have three chances to form a pact with a Demon."

"After all, the Sect’s territory is just too vast. The Household Affairs Hall is relatively close, but places like the Alchemy Hall or the True Talisman Hall require a Qi Cultivation Disciple to fly for a full six or seven hours on a Flying Spiritual Artifact. That’s why many disciples form a pact with a White Head Crane for transportation."

Steward Li patiently described several types of Demons that were easy to form a pact with.

However, these Demons had little potential and weak Power. They were far inferior to the White Apes under the Iron Armor General’s command, and he really couldn’t muster any interest.

"What about the High Tier Demons?"

Steward Li shook his head.

"Those High Tier Demons... their status within the Sect is nearly on par with that of an ordinary Inner Sect Disciple. In fact, the Sect will occasionally grant a Transformation Pill to help the most exceptional ones achieve Transformation and formally join the Sect. Only a True Disciple can form a pact with such a Demon."

A sharp glint flashed in Yang Jing’s eyes.

"Demons can also join our Five Elements True Spirit Sect?"

"Of course, that only applies to these affiliated Demon Race members," Steward Li said. "They share a blood feud with the Demon Country and have lived and multiplied within our Sect’s territory for thousands of years, so it’s only natural that they’re allowed to join the Five Elements True Spirit Sect. Speaking of which, I’ve heard that there’s a transformed Demon in this year’s A Class."

Yang Jing took a sip of his Spirit Tea, his mind buzzing with curiosity. ’To be able to get into A Class in the Five Elements True Spirit Sect... that Demon’s Talent must be extraordinary.’

"Thank you for the pointers, Senior Brother Li. I’m from the Chen Kingdom, one of the border territories, so I’ve fought my fair share of Demons. Without your warning, I might have ignorantly offended that senior brother one day and brought disaster upon myself for no reason."

"Don’t mention it."

Steward Li was beaming.

A moment later, Zhang Yanhao’s Leopard Demon had completed its registration. He took the Demon Token and respectfully excused himself.

Yang Jing released Iron Head, Yinjiao, and Chi Yu from his Beast Taming Bag.

"Sorry to trouble you, Junior Brother Wang."

The Chengcha, whose surname was Wang, looked overwhelmed by the courteous address and hurriedly cupped his hands in a salute.

Steward Li looked at Yang Jing’s three Guardian Beasts.

"No wonder you were asking about the Demons in the Sect, Junior Brother. These three Guardian Beasts of yours are rather mediocre. They’re just wild beasts that underwent Demon Transformation after accidentally eating some Spirit Grass, aren’t they? This kind of Demon is incredibly difficult to train up. You really should replace them."

Chi Yu, the Cyan Bird, almost bristled with indignation, but Yang Jing quickly quelled it with a sharp look.

"These three Demons of mine were left to me by my former master. We’ve been together for many years and have a deep bond. Speaking of which, they each have their own unique skills. The black dog is good at caring for Spirit Plants, the white dog is skilled with the Spiritual Rain Technique, and the Cyan Bird is an expert at catching pests."

"Oh? In that case, these three Demons could actually help you manage your Spirit Field, Junior Brother Yang. That would save you a lot of trouble."
