Chapter 14: Let Go

According to Darwin, producing an offspring may be the most important thing for a species. But individually, children were hell.

They may be adorable little gremlins but you were not legally allowed to throw them away. Or morally.

And as adorable as Latte looked, he was still annoying.

His puffy blonde hair and shiny doe eyes did little to maintain his, for lack of better words, ignorance.

He entered the room brimming with confidence.

"Big brother take me on a pony ride!" These were Latte's first words towards the boy, it rendered the older one confused.

"No." The boy said softly, hoping the younger one would understand.

"Why!" Latte asked quietly.

"Why!" He started to storm around the room in circles chanting the words.

"Because I–"

"I WANT A PONY RIDE!" Latte cut him off. He kept on whining for a while, repeating the words.

"I don't know how to ride one." The boy said, exasperated at how annoying the kid was.

This caused Latte to look at him. Away from the constant wailing of what he wanted.

Latte walked towards the bed, placing his palms on the bed he asked, "Big sister knows how, why don't you?"

"Then go to her, why don't you?" The boy's eyes twitched. He bit his lips.

"She is busy." Latte climbed onto the bed and laid his head on the boy's lap.

"So am I" The black haired boy wanted to punch the blonde boy, but he suddenly lost all his anger at how fluffy his hair looked.

"No." The young boy said.

"Yes." The anger gritted through his teeth.

"NO." The boy screamed.

"Yes, dammit!" The purple eyed boy took a pillow and hit the young child with it.

"Stop hitting me!" Latte took a pillow and started to throw it at the older boy.

"No, you annoying brat!"

Both of them stood on the bed and continued ploughing each other with pillows. The continued thrashing was painful to the older boy. But Latte was just a kid.

It hurt him.

But his pride won't let him fall.

But after a while he fell to the bed.

Tired.

"Big brother, big brother, that was fun!" The young purple eyed boy laughed.

He hugged the older boy.

The older boy turned towards the younger boy. Softly patting his head.

In these two days, it was the most fun he had had.

Was this how annoying he was too?

He laughed at the thought. He definitely was. Annoying people was the easiest way to get their attention. He looked at Latte who was slowly falling asleep.

"I had fun, big brother." His words were feeble and drowsy. The older boy hugged the child back.

The child was a menace.

But it was fun.

And slowly he fell asleep too.

He was in his room. Surrounded by nothing. He used to have a lot when he was young, but as he grew up, he threw them away. Because his sister did not get anything.

His sister was in front of him.

He stared at her for a while. She kept on mouthing some words, but slowly her words faded, she just stood there.

He could not hear her.

He did not remember her voice.

He did not remember her name.

It started with 'A' that was all he knew.

But no names with 'A' occurred in his head.

Then she walked away.

He could not follow her.

His face felt warm. Tears running through his face.

She walked away.

And the door to his room was closed.

She was gone.

And so was he.

He could not hear anything.

Maybe it was time to let go.

Then he opened his eyes, and someone was shaking him. It was Ambre. And he was Mael.

Maybe it was time to accept reality.

"What's wrong?" Ambre asked, her voice uncharacteristically soft.

"Memories." He got up, careful not to disturb Latte. Wiping his tears.

"Okay." Her eyes softened.

She placed a hand on his head, "Are you okay?"

"No." He murmured.

"Alright," she sighed. "It is going to get even worse."

"Huh? Why?" Mael asked, his face twisting.

"We are going to have lunch with our parents." Ambre declared.

"Wow, I don't want to go." Mael responded as quickly as he could.

"Can you just tell them I am sick?" He asked, sighing.

"I don't want to be around them all alone." Her voice was a bit gentle. Unlike all those times.

"Fine."

"Thank you."

"Big sister, are you done with your work?" Latte woke up, rubbing his eyes.

"Yes, time for lunch." Ambre patted the younger boy's head.

"Yay, I am hungry!" The boy giggled. Both the older siblings looked at each other, then at him.

They both smiled.

Mael wondered, just for a second, if life would be fine as it is right now.

He has a bossy older sister.

And a younger idiot of a brother.

Maybe it really was time to let go.

Ambre picked up Latte easily. They both went to change for lunch.

Mael felt his tears roll down.

And after all this time, he broke down because he let go. He let go of his previous world in his body. Now in his belief. Soon he would, in his soul.

It would be fine, he would get out of here, he would finally find the happiness he had wanted all his life. It will be fine soon. In a year he would be somewhere else. Somewhere more fun.

The maid knocked on his door.

He let her enter.

She was going to warm his bath. As he waited for the warm bath he wondered what connected him and Ambre to this world.

Were they readers? Is that why?

Or was it something else altogether?

The maid called him for the bath

Entering the bath the water was hot. It felt great on his skin.

It was uncomfortable having other people watch him. So he asked them to get out.

Soon he melted into the water.

His head stopped functioning.

Forgetting all his thoughts and falling asleep once more.
