Chapter 413: Chapter 413: Guardian vs Sage (2)

Despite hiding inside its turtle shell, the Sage still suffered from the impact. While its exterior defense cannot be shattered in a short period of time, the impact was still strong enough to penetrate its flesh.

As such, the Sage was definitely not having a good time. It knew that if it were to continue hiding in the shell without doing anything, it would only be a matter of time before it would he defeated.

As such, the Sage decided to counterattack. It mobilized its own mana, and its entire body was immediately covered with a crimson energy.

The unmoving shell suddenly started to rotate fast. The friction it caused further damaged and shattered the fabric of space.

If not for the Guardian’s lightning protecting himself, the spatial fragments would have harmed him already.

With the ridiculously fast spinning of the turtle shell, the Guardian was forced to create distance between them. If not, his protective energy might be broken through.

However, now that the Sage decided to counterattack, it wouldn’t let the Guardian off that lightly.

The spinning turtle shell continued its way towards the Guardian, who blocked it with his lightning-infused palm.

More sparks were generated by the two combatants, and any human or magic beasts that came close enough to them died from the aftershocks of their attacks.

Even the few Elders of the council that tried to help were unable to come close enough, as they either had to defend against the spatial storms and fragments or the other magic beasts.

This was the reason why, although the Guardian was stronger than the Sage, he failed to kill it throughout the thousand years he had lived.

The magic beasts have the numerical advantage. While the Senior Mages are afraid to die and are not able to help much, the magic beasts are different.

The ones that hadn’t awakened their sentience followed the Sage’s command, and they threw their lives away just to consume a bit of the Sage’s power.

Human mages cannot do the same, and the Elders were forced to retreat and focus instead on the other magic beasts.

The Guardian was fighting a lone battle. He gritted his teeth before throwing the Sage away from him.

He was about to conjure a thunderbolt to throw at the Sage, but the latter continued to charge at him again after being thrown away. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

In the end, the Guardian was forced to defend from the rapidly spinning turtle shell that was continuously moving around.

There were a few times that the turtle shell was thrown by the Guardian, but it still continued to attack him.

With the other magic beasts continuously giving up their lives, the Guardian soon started to grow weary.

His attacks started to falter. He consumed way more mana than his opponent, and despite being stronger, it would only be a matter of time before he was defeated.

As if sensing the Guardian’s decline, the Sage even retreated, and more magic beasts attacked.

It knows that a cornered enemy would bite hard. The Guardian might decide to use a kamikaze attack so that the Sage would go down with him.

If that happens, the Sage might die, and that is not something it will allow to happen. In its eyes, it was better for thousands of lower beasts to die rather than itself.

One side is willing to sacrifice itself for the masses, while the other is willing to sacrifice its people for itself.

They are on opposite ends of the spectrum, and today, only one of them will continue to live.

"Disgusting!"

The Guardian noticed and understood the Sage’s intention. This was not the first time that the two of them clashed against each other. As such, the Guardian already knows quite a bit about the Sage’s personality.

It was an utterly disgusting coward!

The Guardian would not let himself fall! If he is bound to die, then he would make sure that the Sage would go down with him!

In that way, humanity’s situation would still improve even after his death. After all, humanity now has Rezen. With his help, most magic beasts at the Senior Rank are bound to fall!

In fact, Rezen himself is the reason why the Sage decided to attack prematurely. It was originally waiting for the time when the Guardian dies, and it wouldn’t be that long before that happens.

Magic beasts typically have longer lifespans compared to humans, not to mention, the Sage is a turtle, a race known for its longevity.

Originally, the Sage is playing the long game, waiting for the time when the Guardian dies so that it can easily destroy humanity.

If it were to attack the City of Hope while the Guardian is still alive, there is a risk to its own life, and it was not a risk it wanted to take.

Unfortunately, circumstances forced the Sage to attack while the Guardian was still alive.

At first, it was only Junior Beasts that could be corrupted by humanity, but suddenly, even Senior Beasts are corrupted. Not to mention, as time goes by, even the stronger Senior Beasts are starting to be corrupted.

If the trend continues, the Sage fears that even peak Senior Beasts might be affected. If that happens, how could it ever contend against the Guardian and humanity?

Its advantage all came from the fact that it had subordinates it could send to death. If humanity continues to grow until they can corrupt peak Senior Beass, heck, they might even be able to corrupt a Great beast! Once that happens, the situation would be reversed.

It would be humanity that is the dominant race of the Savage Beast Realm, while the magic beasts would be forced to hide or be killed, or worse, corrupted.

To prevent that, the Guardian and even the Mage that caused the corruption of the magic beasts have to die!

For that, the Sage has no choice but to risk everything, and it will soon reap the benefits of its scheme.

The Guardian recklessly spent his mana to reach the Sage, but the Sage focused all of its power to pull distance between them.

Whether it be the water, the magic beasts, or even the Sage’s own attacks, all managed to keep the Guardian at bay.

In the end, even after using most of his mana, the Guardian still failed to kill the Sage. He was currently at his weakest state.

His old age, as well as the exhaustion from using almost all of his mana, made the Guardian weak.

"Is this the end? Is humanity doomed? What did I even use my life for?"

"I even sacrificed my own people for the Tree in hopes that a new Great Mage would appear before I die."

"But now, before the tree can even bear fruit, I would die?"

The Guardian was filled with endless bitterness. He doesn’t care about his life or death. He had lived for a long time already, and he was ready to die, but something was holding him back. It was humanity.

Once he died, the City of Hope would he destroyed, and humans would be forced to hide and keep away from the magic beasts.

They would return to their tribal era, and who knows if a day would come when another Guardian would appear?

"I am unwilling! I am extremely unwilling!"

The Guardian doesn’t want to accept his defeat. The City of Hope was his life’s work, and he devoted his life to bringing peace and safety to his own race.

Was he about to watch his life’s work be destroyed just like that?

The Guardian wanted nothing else but to kill the Sage, but too bad, in this world, mere emotions alone cannot breach the vast gap in power.

"You will die now" the Sage declared, yet it still didn’t move close to the Guardian but instead opened its mouth to gather crimson energy.

Even when the Guardian doesn’t have enough power to fight back anymore, the Sage still ensured that its life would not be compromised.

Instead of approaching the Guardian, it opted to attack from afar, and with its power, even if one attack fails to finally kill the enemy, the next round of attacks should be able to do that.

When the Sage gathered enough energy, it fired a crimson beam towards the Guardian, who weakly raised his hand. He tried to gather the last bit of mana that he had, but he knew that the inevitable would soon happen.

Even if he managed to block this attack and survive, it was hard to say if the next attack could also he defended by him.

Just like what the Sage said, he, the Guardian of humanity, would die now, or so he and the Sage thought.

Just before the crimson beam hits the Guardian, the figure of a woman wearing a mask that covered her face appeared.

With a single palm, she managed to block the crimson beam, much to the Sage and Guardian’s surprise.
