Chapter 18: Hidden Lineage

Violet

He called it a spirit?

I sat on the bed, focusing on the force within me. Last time I’d used this power, it nearly killed me. But I couldn’t just do nothing. I glanced at the stool across the room and flicked my finger lightly, trying to recall the sensation I felt when I had used it. The small stool at the other end of the room shifted, dragging across the carpet slightly and with a sudden jerk, it tugged towards me and rammed against my legs.

I jumped, the stool knocking sideways to the floor as I bent down and held my legs, feeling the throbbing pain that shot up my body.

I stared at the stool and the pain faded quickly. I also didn’t feel weak from using the power. Something had changed.

I raised my hand, willing the stool to stand back up.

It did.

But a slight ache shot through my arm just as I heard a sudden knock at the door. The stool fell back down and I looked up, alarmed.

That wasn’t Kael.

"May I come in?"

A different voice came through the door and I immediately stood up. "Yes...?"

The door opened to reveal a tall woman, nearly as tall as Kael... and far stronger than Ila. I went still.

Was this his other Beta?

She looked older, more mature, and her red hair was striking, even with the low lighting from the moon. Her loose long dress flowed with her silent movement as she closed the door behind her and approached me.

Her face seemed welcoming. A faint smile touched her lips and her eyes assessed me.

"You’re beautiful."

I blinked, taken aback. "Thank you?"

She walked around me slowly, inspecting. I shifted uncomfortably, turning to follow her movement. She then stopped and reached for the pendant. I drew back and her hand paused mid-air.

"Please relax. I will not harm you." She touched the pendant on my chest and inspected it.

I stood still, confused and shocked.

Her eyes finally shifted to mine as she let go of the pendant. "I am Tow, Kael’s first beta. You are?"

"Violet." I gently clutched the pendant against my chest, stepping back. My legs hit the bed and I paused.

She crossed her arms across her chest and stared at me before her smile widened, warmer this time. "Welcome to Fresna’s capital, Violet. Kael has told me a bit about you."

Tow sat herself at the edge of the bed and extended her arm, beckoning for me to sit beside her.

I stiffly sat down.

"Please, your hands," she said, extending her hands.

I stared at them. "Might I ask why?"

"I want to check for myself, the power you have," she said and took hold of my hands anyway.

I felt a faint hum and a tingle race across my skin. Her eyes were wide as she slowly let go of my hand.

"Incredible," she whispered, slowly looking up at my face.

"What?"

"Have you heard of Lycans before?" she asked, her eyes suddenly sharp.

"No... Am I one?"

She stared at me, incredulous. "You are not aware of Lunar instinct. Neither about..." Tow sighed and looked at my pendant. "Who gave that to you?"

"My... grandmother."

Her brows lifted slightly. "Is she alive?"

I looked away and shook my head, absentmindedly touching the pendant. "No."

"Violet." I glanced at her at the sudden mention of my name and my breath paused. She had a very serious expression on her face. "You might have grown up as an omega, but you are shifting into a Lycan."

Then she stood up and began to pace back and forth before stopping right in front of me.

"Here is what will happen. You are to tell no one of this. No one. Lycans are extinct for a reason."

My eyes widened in horror at her words.

She continued, "I, Ila and Kael are the only ones who know of this matter and it must remain that way. Do you understand?"

"Yes, I understand that, but you’ve not really explained much. What exactly are Lycans, I have never heard of them. And why are they extinct?"

"They were killed off," Tow said, point-blank.

A strange numbness took over my chest at her words and she sat down beside me again.

"Some of your ancestors were likely Lycans. And the watered down gene must have become dominant in you. Did your grandmother mention anything when she gave this pendant to you?"

"No, she only said it was a gift..."

My words trailed off and I paused, trying to see if there was something I wasn’t remembering. But no matter how hard I went through my memories with her, she never said anything strange. And she had mostly been quiet whenever I spent time with her.

"The emblem on that pendant is an old Lycan insignia."

I faced her. "How do you know that?"

She frowned. "Every Supreme Alpha knows of this... along with others who have access to their private libraries. We have ours. You may be lucky no one in your pack paid any attention to it."

"I hardly wore it," I murmured in response, quickly taking the pendant off my neck to closely inspect it.

"Do not wear it here either... at all."

My neck snapped up as I looked at her.

"It is for your own good." The frown on her face faded and she eyed the stool on the floor. "Tell me when you started feeling that ’thing’ in you."

My mind first went blank. There was no way I was going to tell her I died and heard a voice...

The voice.

I frowned, looking at the pendant again.

A sun and a moon.

That voice knew what I was.

But would it really be a wise idea to tell her this?

I spoke slowly, staring at the pendant. "I... I honestly am not too sure. It started a few days ago. After my mate rejected me."

"You had a mate?!"

I faced Tow, shocked at her loud voice. Her reaction in turn, scared me.

"Is something wrong?"
