Chapter 19: Unworthy

Violet

Tow’s eyes widened, her composed expression cracking for just a moment.

"You had a mate?" she repeated, quieter this time, and studied my face with renewed intensity. "When did they reject you?"

I shifted uncomfortably under her gaze. "I... I do not know how many days have passed, but I wandered on my own for around three days before... he found me. It faded some time in the camp."

"And you have recovered completely from the rejection?"

I nodded.

Tow went still. Then she frowned, looking away from me as a thoughtful expression settled on her face. She touched her chin. "Rejection sickness should linger for months, especially in someone with... your constitution. But that shouldn’t fully be enough... unless you had a near-death experience...?"

I stayed quiet, and my heart beat faster.

She must have heard it because she immediately looked at me. I averted my gaze and to my surprise she didn’t ask anything. Not right after.

She didn’t need to know about waking up in the past, about the voice in the darkness, about dying and coming back. That truth was mine alone.

And I barely knew her.

"No matter," she spoke up and I faced her. "Your powers have helped you move on thankfully. Now, Kael is your mate..."

I slowly shook my head. "I didn’t ask for this—"

"I know." Her expression softened slightly and she chuckled. "No one chooses mate bonds."

She stood up, clasping her hands behind her back.

Her tone shifted and I couldn’t help the chill that had settled on my body. "But, no one else can know about your mate bond with him."

She angled her body to slightly face me.

"What?" I whispered, shocked.

It is not something I would have even wanted either, but why would she make this a point?

"Do not take this to heart, Violet. As of now, depending on who in the pack notices you, you are unranked or an omega. More importantly, you are unable to shift. If the pack learns that their Supreme Alpha is mated to someone like you—"

"Someone like me?" I slowly stood up, a slight buzzing sound in my ears at her choice of words.

What was even more painful was the lack of hostility at which she said it.

As if it was normal!

Her eyes softened and she raised a hand. "Please, understand. Usually Supreme Alphas, unlike other wolves can choose their own mate. Someone of a strong, if not equal standing. This situation... to an outsider would undermine him. Other high-ranking wolves in the capital would also question his judgement and right to rule. His strength. His ability to lead..." Her eyes were unflinching as she continued. "I do not want that."

My legs suddenly became weak and I sat myself back down on the bed, my eyes to the floor.

At first, I thought he would have said this, but it then dawned on me.

"He didn’t ask you to say this."

Tow answered, her voice soft as always, "No, but he would have wanted this."

I looked up at her, angry, but my voice remained low. "I had no intention to go around parading it in the first place. And what is this? What did omegas and unranked wolves ever do to anyone to be treated so—"

"It is not that simple. That is not how society functions—"

I clenched my fists, my frown deepening. "You can change that! You have the power to change that! I didn’t ask to be born as one. Neither did all the others—"

"Stop."

Against my will, my mouth clamped shut. I stiffened in horror. Tow’s eyes had hardened and they glowed slightly before fading.

The sudden pressure on my lips faded, but I remained quiet, visibly disturbed, and uncomfortable.

"I am sorry," Tow murmured, an apologetic look flashing across her face before fading. She looked away from me. "I can tell you might have been sheltered growing up, but out there, it doesn’t work the way you think. Unranked wolves and omegas are weak links in a pack, always targeted especially by opposing packs or wolves. I do not know if you know of Fresna. Kael rules this place, and it contains a lot of military power. Strength is one of the most important things valued here."

Tow walked to the other side of the room and leaned against the wall, shadows partially concealing her body.

I didn’t say anything.

I was not interested in saying anything.

I felt bitter. Disgusted. And most importantly, violated.

Power? That was it?

Tow spoke up again, "Believe it or not, your safety is involved too. You would become a target for every enemy he has made, and every rival who wants to see him fall, both within and outside his territories."

Her words entered one ear and went out the other. I heard everything she said, but it painfully reminded me of Damon.

"In essence, I am not worthy," I whispered more to myself than to her.

The silence that followed after was unmistakable.

Even if Kael had not told her to say this, he most definitely had the same mindset.

"Thankfully, you are not just an Omega. You should be happy. But for now, until you can shift, or until you can prove your strength undeniably, you are a weakness Kael cannot afford to show."

Her words hit like blows.

This was a different pack, a different environment, and different circumstances, but the message was the same.

I blinked back the sudden sting in my eyes. "I understand. Stop."

"Violet—"

"I said I understand," I gritted out, my voice coming out harder than I intended. I raised my head to look at her. "I won’t tell anyone. About the bond, and about what I am. I have heard you."

"It’s not personal," Tow said quietly, her presence almost compassionate. "This isn’t just about your value as a person. You need to remain alive to become strong enough so that no one can question you."

"How reassuring," I dryly muttered, locking gazes with Tow. "All that after explaining just how unworthy I was."

She frowned.
