Chapter 33: Gopal, the funny chauffeur

Chapter - 33

The car soon rolled smoothly up to the private terminal, where two staff members were already waiting. One of them opened the door before the car could even stop properly.

Iris stepped out, her heels clicking softly on the ground and her expression was calm and serious, completely opposite to what it was. Lucius stepped out behind her, still keeping an eye on her.

The driver quietly placed the bags near the jet stairs, while the pilot who was waiting for them gave a small nod.

"We are ready to take off whenever you are, ma’am," he said.

Iris didn’t respond... She just walked past him, giving him a side eye.

Lucius caught up to her, still watching her face, "You sure you are okay?"

Iris didn’t look at him, "I am."

"You looked... quite shaken earlier," he said, his voice low.

Iris stopped for a second, turned to him and said in a quiet voice, "Don’t be too nosy, Lucius. I am not your friend. So know your boundaries."

Lucius sighed and nodded. He didn’t push her. But his eyes never left her. They walked up the stairs and entered the jet.

Inside, it was clean and quiet, the seats wide and comfortable. Iris sat down first, staring out the window. Lucius, on the other hand, took a seat in front of her.

Soon, the engines started. The jet rolled forward and lifted into the dark sky.

Once the plane was in the air, Iris closed her eyes and left no chance for any conversation.

Lucius glanced at her one last time, then leaned back too.

Meanwhile, at the Airport...

Dragging her suitcase, Cassey rushed through the airport, her chest heaving with stress. Her hair was a mess, and her mood was a disaster.

She reached the counter, nearly slamming her bag against it, "Flight to Udaipur... Has it taken off?"

The lady behind the desk checked her screen, "Yes, ma’am. The flight just took off fifteen minutes ago."

"FUCKING SHIT!" Cassey slapped her hand against the counter. A few people nearby turned and stared, but she didn’t care.

"When is the next one?" she barked.

The woman behind the counter calmly answered, "There’s another flight to Udaipur... but it has been delayed. Estimated departure time is three hours from now."

Cassey stared at her in disbelief, "Three hours?! Are you fucking with me right now?!"

"I am sorry, ma’am. But that’s the earliest I can get you on board a flight to Udaipur."

"Of course. Because why the fuck not." She yelled, throwing her arms, but she couldn’t do anything else, "Do it. Book me a seat."

After she was done booking her ticket, she turned away, muttering curses under her breath, "First traffic. Then fire. Then the missed flight. Now this. What’s next? Plane crashes on takeoff?"

Cassey threw herself into a chair in the waiting area. She looked horrible and felt worse.

She stared at the ceiling, "I should have listened to mom," she muttered. But then she remembered Iris’s face, calm and smug, and Lucius by her side.

"No, I am not letting that bitch have him," she hissed, pulling her bag closer, "I will swim through hell fire if I have to. But you can’t have him."

And it was actually hell for Cassey. Two painful hours passed. Non-stop crying of kids, loud announcements, and laughs of those toothless old people... Everything drove her crazy.

Finally, her flight was called. She pushed herself up and dragged her suitcase toward the gate.

As she settled into her seat on the plane, she closed her eyes and whispered, "I don’t care how long this takes. I am not going back empty-handed."

A small, angry smile played on her lips.

"I am going to ruin you, Iris. Starting from your gigolo."

On the other side of the globe...

After a long eight-hour flight, Iris and Lucius finally reached Udaipur.

The private jet landed smoothly just after sunrise, touching down on the quiet runway of the small VIP terminal of the airport.

As the aircraft doors opened, the soft, golden morning light poured in. A gentle breeze carried the scent of fresh earth and blooming flowers.

Soon, Iris stepped onto the stairs followed closely by Lucius. And their attention was drawn towards the sleek white Range Rover waiting for them at the end of the stairs.

And a man in what seemed to be his early fifties with a sharp jawline, salt-and-pepper beard, neatly dressed in a crisp white kurta, neatly folded dhoti, tan juttis, and a pair of slick sunglasses stood by the car.

He looked like he belonged to the old guard of a royal family... but there was a hint of playfulness on his face.

He smiled as they approached, holding the rear door open with one hand, "Madamji, Sir... Welcome to Udaipur... The city of lakes, palaces, and overpriced tea by the lake," he said with a wink, "I hope the flight was comfortable."

Lucius raised a brow hearing him and Iris didn’t react, but the corner of her lip twitched.

The man continued, "I am Gopal. But you can call me Gops. I hear they do so in the west. I will be your humble charioteer. Except this chariot comes with AC, Bluetooth and a powerful engine."

Lucius stifled a laugh. Iris simply stepped into the car without saying a word, but she clearly heard him.

Gopal helped the airport staff load the luggage into the trunk. After they were done, he quickly got behind the wheel, adjusted his seat, and pulled the car out of the airport smoothly.

Udaipur looked magical in the early light... As soon as they got into the city, they saw colourful shops opening for the day, and women in bright sarees sweeping doorsteps. The streets were peaceful, yet full of life.

"So... Udaipur traffic is light today. No cows on the main road. Alas... We could have taken early blessings. But don’t worry, maybe some other day," Gopal said, glancing at them in the rearview mirror.

"You two here for business? Or the classic break-up-healing trip? I have seen both."

Lucius chuckled, "Business."

"Ah," Gopal nodded, "Hope it’s not with local builders. They say yes to everything, deliver half, and blame the rest on the government."

Iris was staring out the window, still quiet. She looked totally uninterested in whatever Gopal was blabbering.

Gopal glanced again and smiled, "And madamji, I must say, you have got the kind of silence that says, ’I can destroy you with a sentence.’ It’s impressive."

"It might make people nervous. But not me though. But I must say. With that aura, you must visit our Mahakal. You two might just hit it off. The innocent destroyers."

That earned a full laugh from Lucius... And finally, Iris’s lips parted in a soft smile. Just a flicker. But it was real.

And Lucius noticed it immediately.

By the time they reached the hotel, Lucius’s stomach was already hurting and Iris was not ignoring Gopal like before.

When the car stopped in front of the hotel Gopal was quick to open the door for Iris.

As she stepped out with a slight smile on her face, she turned to Gopal, "Thank you, Gopal."

"You can always call me Gops, Madam ji," Gopal replied with a smile.

"No, Gopal suits you," Iris shook her head.

He put a hand on his heart, "My honour, madam. If you ever need local gossip, pani-puri recommendations, or just someone to convince you how our chai is better than your coffee, you know who to call."

"I will," Iris nodded with a smile and walked away.

Lucius stepped out behind her and handed him a bunch of folded notes... A solid tip, "You did really good Gopal... Thank you. That was something she needed."

Gopal nodded and smiled, "Sometimes, sir... The road knows what the heart needs."

And with that, Lucius soon watched the Range Rover drive away.
