Chapter 57: Unexpected help

A satisfied grin spreads across Mia’s face as she smugly takes in the desolation around her.

Then her gaze falls on Zaira and Chris.

"And now, it’s your turn to die!"

Her eyes glow with an ominous pink light.

She’s about to incinerate them with the Destruction Dragon Eyes, leaving them no chance to resist, when she suddenly freezes.

The wings and golden horns vanish abruptly, and the pink stone in her forehead returns to the pendant she wore around her neck.

She’s herself again — and now falling toward the ground.

Luckily for Chris and Zaira, Mia’s body reached its limit and gave out a moment before Azkarith could land that lethal attack.

Zaira lets go of Chris abruptly — they’re less than twenty meters from the ground, and she knows he can land safely — then dives straight toward Mia.

She catches her before she hits the ground and gently brings her down.

"Z-Zaira... I... I don’t know what came over me. I-I didn’t want to hurt you, I swear..." Mia sobs, her voice breaking with tears.

"I know, Mia, I know... it’s not your fault. Everything’s fine now. You did great — just focus on resting. If those monsters show up again, Chris and I will take care of them," Zaira reassures her, gently stroking her.

She forces herself to stay calm so as not to worry Mia further, but inside she’s a bundle of nerves and terror. Her hands tremble even as she brushes the back of Mia’s head, the memory of that near-death moment still vivid in her mind.

Chris lets out a long sigh of relief as well.

He knows the situation is far from resolved and that this is only a temporary moment of quiet.

Soon other hordes of primordial vampires will show up, and he needs to take advantage of this to recover his strength.

Exhausted, he lets himself fall onto the scorched ground — when something in the distance catches his attention. A figure is emerging from beyond the rubble of the collapsed buildings.

Who the hell is she?

The silhouette walks toward them at a brisk pace.

It’s someone Chris has never seen before — a woman dressed in black with long pink hair.

◇◇◇

Westchester County, 9:40 a.m.

WOOOSH!

Isabelle unleashes another devastating slash with her enormous blood sword.

It’s so powerful that the shockwave spreads for dozens of meters, cutting down the primordial vampires as if struck by the blade itself.

Of the forest that stood before her just minutes ago, only uprooted trunks remain, as if a storm had torn through it.

Hundreds of those creatures are swept away by the violent gust, while the corpses of thousands already slain cover the entire area.

And yet just as many are still standing, and they attack Isabelle without giving her a moment to breathe.

"How many the fuck are there?! You’re really starting to piss me off!"

The vortex of Sanguis energy around her grows even more intense. All the vampires within dozens of meters are lifted into the air and thrown away, at the mercy of that scarlet hurricane.

Isabelle launches forward at the speed of sound, crashing into the wall of primordial vampires before her and carving through them like an icebreaker through frozen seas.

She reduces hundreds of them to pulp just by plowing through them, but is forced to stop when some manage to cling to her.

But before they can sink their claws into her flesh, they are thrown away by a new violent surge of energy.

That full-speed charge brings her a few hundred meters closer to the city. But she’s still far, and the primordial vampires have already surrounded her again.

With every passing moment, her irritation grows uncontrollably — along with the fear that something terrible might happen to Chris, Mia and Zaira... if it hasn’t already.

◇◇◇

The mysterious pink-haired woman who, until moments ago, was just a blurred figure in the distance now stands only a few steps away from Chris, Mia, and Zaira.

He stares at her in confusion, completely unaware of who she is or what she’s doing there. But the same cannot be said for the two girls.

They know exactly who it is — Levreeshka Dulcar — and the terror paralyzing them prevents them from even speaking.

Mia knows her personally. It wasn’t uncommon for the generals of the Scarlet Army to be invited to the royal palace to celebrate their victories.

Zaira, on the other hand, has only recognized the Dulcar family emblem on Levreeshka’s black metal corset — and that alone is enough to plunge her into complete despair.

Levreeshka’s gaze falls on Mia, slumped on the ground, exhausted, with her head resting on Zaira’s thighs.

"Good morning, Princess Mia Valakis — or rather, former princess. It’s been a while since we last met, hasn’t it? At least five years, I’d say. I’d like to say you look well... but that would be quite out of place right now."

"M-Mia... who is this woman? How do you know her?" Chris asks, unease growing in his voice.

The sinister grin on the woman’s face is anything but reassuring.

Mia struggles to breathe, not from exhaustion, but from shock.

"S-She... she... is one of the four generals of the Scarlet Army... Levreeshka Dulcar..."

That surname alone is enough to wipe away every trace of confusion from Chris and replace it instantly with pure terror.

Levreeshka looks around at the scorched earth left by Mia, stretching as far as the eye can see — and beyond it, only ruined buildings.

"Look what you forced me to do just to bring you out into the open, my dear Mia. Millions dead for nothing... when all you had to do was die that night four years ago, just like the rest of your family."

Chris jumps to his feet and points his blood katana at Levreeshka.

"I... I won’t let you hurt Mia! If you want to get to her, you’ll have to kill me first!"

"And that’s exactly what I intend to do."

Levreeshka clutches her stomach, as if about to vomit. Then a torrent of blood bursts from her mouth, spraying all around her.

The large pool of blood begins to boil, then rises and writhes until it takes the shape of an enormous primordial vampire — far larger than any ever seen.

It’s as tall as a two-story building, its shadow completely covering Chris, Mia, and Zaira.

The three stare at the colossus in shock.

Zaira jumps to her feet as well and steps in front of Mia, shielding her from the creature.

At a gesture from Levreeshka, the giant moves. It raises a foot the size of a car, ready to crush Zaira.

The succubus stretches her arms toward it, about to form a large sphere of purple energy, when... slash!

A white flash darts at full speed from the edge of that desolate land that was once the Bronx.

An instant later, the primordial vampire’s head rolls to the ground, and its body collapses heavily backward.

Levreeshka leaps back to avoid being crushed.

"W-What was that...?" Chris stammers in disbelief.

But then he sees her — a girl with short black hair, wearing a tight blue suit and a white cloak, both smeared with blood.

In her hands she grips a sword of white light, and her body radiates that same pure glow.

"I-It’s not possible..."

Once again, disbelief and confusion take over — but not because he doesn’t know who she is. Quite the opposite.

"B-Brianne...?"

She gives him a quick glance out of the corner of her eye, then lets a slight, relieved smile show.

"I finally found you. I’m glad to see you’re all okay."

Chris frowns in confusion.

"I-I’m glad to see you’re still in one piece, Brianne."

I-I can’t believe it... B-Brianne... is a Monster Slayer?! This is insane... how the hell did I not realize it all these years?! And more importantly, how wasn’t she surprised when she saw Zaira’s demon wings and the blood weapons Mia and I use? Could it be that... she already knew everything?!

Of course... now I get it. That’s why she kept pushing me, why she was so suspicious lately — always asking about my secrets... she probably wanted me to confess on my own. But it looks like she has her own secrets too!

Still... this isn’t the time to fix things. Now that we have someone who can use Sacred Light on our side, maybe we actually stand a chance against Levreeshka!

Mia and Zaira are stunned as well when they realize who Brianne really is, but they don’t ask questions. All that matters is that she’s here to help — explanations can wait.

"What a nasty surprise... what’s a Monster Slayer doing here? I thought the mess I caused in Manhattan would be enough to keep you all busy there..."

As she speaks, a whip of blood forms and tightens in her fist.

"...it doesn’t matter. Three brats or four makes no difference to me. And since all of you care so much about staying by Princess Mia Valakis’s side... you can keep her company in the Realm of the Dead for eternity!"
