Chapter 53: Leone’s New Advisor

That night, Kael requested another audience with Leone.

He agreed and met the chieftain in the same cavern where they had talked earlier.

But they weren’t alone this time.

Yuni and Jason were also there. Food was also laid out, which indicated they would have dinner together.

Kael smiled. He didn’t mind the two teenagers joining them. In fact, he was glad they were present to hear his "good news" personally.

"Thank you for your time, Great Chieftain," Kael said in a respectful tone.

Yuni’s eyes widened in shock, while Jason had the "I knew it" expression on his face.

"Since you call me Great Chieftain, I believe the Riverfang Tribe has made their decision?" Leone asked, still wearing his mask.

"Yes, Great Chief," Kael replied proudly. "We wish to become Sir Leone’s Vassals."

"Good." Leone nodded and gestured for Kael to sit down right next to him. The middle-aged man was overjoyed, for sitting right beside his new chieftain was a great honor.

It meant that he treated him as an equal!

"Now that there are no outsiders around, I won’t be needing this mask anymore," Leone took off his mask and the wolf pelt that covered his hair.

Kael looked surprised, but he didn’t look that surprised. Part of him already expected that Leone might not be native to the Borderlands.

If the young man had been born here, his name would’ve been spread long ago.

"My name is Leone Frontera," Leone introduced himself. "I am an exile from the Kingdom of Britannia. Kael of the Riverfang Tribe, I will give you a chance to revoke your intention of becoming my vassal."

"Sir Leone, I won’t change my mind," Kael replied. "In fact, I am now certain that our decision to follow you is the right thing to do. We are in very capable hands."

Yuni, Maximus, and Arion blinked at the same time.

They were wondering if the middle-aged man was telling the truth or merely trying to score brownie points to make a good impression.

From their interactions with Leone, they found it hard to associate him with the word capable.

"Hey. Is it just me, or you guys just thought of something rude?" Leone asked Yuni and the others, but they simply said he was just overthinking.

"Anyway, let’s all eat before the food turns cold," Leone said. "We can talk more as we dine."

The atmosphere grew lively as they started their dinner. Kael was an expert in holding a conversation, and he shared many stories about the earlier days of the tribes in the borderlands.

He had a very rich experience, and his storytelling was incredibly good. It felt like a grandpa telling their grandchildren stories from when he was young.

Of course, Kael was only a middle-aged man, so calling him grandpa was a bit excessive. Even so, his stories allowed Leone to get a better understanding of the geopolitics of the Borderlands.

He even believed that this was Kael’s way of telling him which tribes to watch out for and which one might be amiable to ally with them.

Jason had to admit that Kael knew what he was doing. He was already showing his capabilities as both an adviser and an important vassal.

When they finished eating, Leone looked at the chieftain of the Riverfang Tribe and smiled.

"Kael, I now recognize you as my vassal," Leone stated. "But your ceremony of vassalship will have to wait for the arrival of Ulric and the Black Wolf Tribe. We shall celebrate their safe return and your promotion simultaneously."

"I am honored you hold me in high regard, Great Chieftain!" Kael said respectfully.

"Also, when we’re alone or with my other vassals, I permit you to refer to me as Leone," Leone stated. "You’re still older than me, after all. I’ve also decided to make you one of my advisers. Speaking of which, allow me to introduce my Chief Advisor."

"Is my time to shine finally here?"

The grimoire lying beside Leone rose and hovered in front of Kael, making the old man almost back away in shock.

Fortunately, Kael regained his composure right away, saving himself from embarrassment.

"Greetings, Kael. My name is Daedalus!" Daedalus declared. "Since both of us are going to work together, I hope we get along well."

"O-Of course, Sir Daedalus," Kael replied. "I look forward to working with you as well."

"Good." Daedalus nodded in satisfaction. "Also, while it’s a little late, I hope you don’t regret your decision in becoming Leone’s vassal. He’s... a fine piece of work."

Yuni giggled, knowing exactly what the grimoire was talking about.

Jason watched this scene, a little envious of Kael becoming Leone’s advisor. This would certainly be a big boost to the Riverfang Tribe going forward.

However, he also had plans on his own.

He might not be as sly or as smart as Kael, but Jason had still been trained by his father to become the next chieftain of the Black Wolf Tribe.

There was a way for him to close the gap, but he would have to wait until his tribe members safely arrived in the Grimjaw Mountains.

’I hope they’re alright,’ Jason thought. ’Uncle, please hurry.’

Little did the young man know that their two former allied tribes had managed to come to an agreement.

Although they had yet to find out that Jason and a few of his warriors had headed to the Grimjaw Mountain to ask for help, it wouldn’t be a hindrance in their plan.

The Black Wolf Tribe was only a shell of what it used to be. In the eyes of the two tribes, they were no different from sheep asking to be slaughtered.

Their two Chieftains had agreed to do a surprise raid in three days.

There were other tribes also eyeing the Black Wolf Tribe, so they must first wait for the right moment to launch the attack.

The situation in the Borderlands was very volatile, and a single spark could cause a fire that would consume all of them whole.
