Chapter 131: Proper Burial

"Huh?" Claire blinked, not at all expecting Eva to suddenly run into Aaron’s arms despite everyone watching.

Eva was shy and resistant to revealing their polygamous relationship, which made Claire feel more secure and ’higher’ in status, even when Aaron claimed that he loved them all the same.

But now she was watching that same shy and resistant girl sobbing in HER lover’s embrace, mumbling an incomprehensible string of words that none of them were able to understand.

And just like Claire, Aaron himself was caught off guard by Eva’s public display of affection, but he didn’t let that thought deter him.

His hands gently rubbed her back, consoling her and telling her that everything was fine.

She was clutching onto his clothes like a baby koala, her head buried in his chest.

"I was so scared, what if you died when you used the spell? You stupid man! Why can’t you behave like normal men! Ughhhh!" she mumbled, but the speed of her words was so fast and muffled that no one could understand what she was saying.

When rubbing her back didn’t seem to help, Aaron adopted a new approach and slid his fingers through her silky black hair, rubbing them before curling his fingers on her scalp and massaging it directly.

The effect was instant and Eva’s grip tightened, her body squirming into his touch as her sobs slowed down in intensity.

But when the brief moment of emotional overload had passed, heat rushed to her cheeks and they brightened up instantly.

She could feel his hand in her hair, his arm wrapped around her protectively and... everyone’s stares digging into her back with cold apprehension.

After all, Claire was Aaron’s girlfriend. Why the fuck was her best friend snuggling so close to him then?!

When thinking like that, she instantly wanted to separate herself and run off alone, hiding from the sight of everyone else! But... his touch felt so comforting...

And where could she even hide? Her teammates were right here and the one she was supposed to be scared of already knew about the truth.

Why care so much about what others think?

She nodded to herself, making a slight movement against his chest which made Aaron chuckle, imagining what sort of thoughts were going around in the pretty little head of hers.

"Ahem." Eva cleared her throat calmly and moved away from his embrace, feeling a slight sense of detachment from the lack of sensation in her hair, but she toughened through it.

"I just wanted to congratulate you for getting us the corpse of that mimic, and also I was worried you might get hurt when you ended up saying the spell out loud." she said calmly. "Why did you even take that risk?"

Aaron knew that she wanted nothing more than to change the topic from her sudden emotional outburst, so he played along. "Because I wanted to distract him and make sure he couldn’t dodge the fireball."

"That was smart but risky. Do that again and I’m not bringing you to more hunts." Claire commented coldly, not mentioning anything about what had just happened.

Aaron merely shook his head with a smile in response.

But then their lovable get-together was suddenly halted by a haunting wail.

They turned around in an instant, finding a woman kneeling near a feminine corpse, tears running down her cheeks unfettered as she screamed toward the nine heavens in the sky.

She was the elder sister of the woman who had muttered ’Thank god...’ and had gotten her heart plucked out of her chest as a result.

They were saddened and scared, grieving about the loss of their family-like five teammates who were lost.

And yet amidst their loss, they felt strangely happy that at least those two were safe. At least they survived.

But now... even that was lost.

Vyra was trying her hardest to calm her teammates down, all the while stifling her tears and pain within herself.

She didn’t blame Claire like Sena, but she didn’t turn to look at their group either. She knew, they knew, everyone knew that she blamed Claire for all that had happened, but she also knew that Claire knew she blamed her.

It was a mistake of greed, and there was a lot she wanted to say and rage about, but nothing she did would bring her teammates back.

It was also a slight miscalculation on their part, their mistake that they didn’t properly scout before entering, that they didn’t take proper precautions.

No one could be blamed for this.

This was how a raider’s life went, laughing and enjoying one moment and getting killed in the next.

It wasn’t for no reason that raiding was a highly respected but also feared profession.

"Claire." Vyra said after many minutes of silence, wiping the faint tears in her eyes with her sleeve.

"Yes." Claire replied, grief and sadness obvious in her tone, but she kept up her dignity as a leader.

"I need help with the graves. I would like to offer a proper burial for my teammates."

"I understand."

There was no fanfare, no wasted words and nor any pleasantries as Claire walked toward Vyra and offered her hand to help her to her feet.

Together they moved toward the entrance where most of the bodies were gathered, some decently intact while some torn and ruined to a disgusting level.

Their teammates followed after them, with Katie grabbing the monster’s corpse with one hand and roughly dragging it along while the Sanguini sister held her little sister in a princess carry as she carried her.

Seeing the sight in front of him, Aaron swiftly averted his eyes. Adrenaline no longer pumped through his veins.

His gag reflex came swinging hard at him, giving him an urge to puke but he barely resisted it.

Eva had seen such things before but she wasn’t immune to the gore either, as she turned around and gently nodded at Aaron, asking him that they should help with the graves rather than... the difficult part.

Katie and Lia also chose to help with the graves, accompanied by a woman from the Sanguini guild, who had dried tear stains running down her cheeks.

With their collective effort, six graves were dug easily...
