Chapter 44: Food

"To clear out these monsters?"

Claire smiled wryly, nodding slightly, "Kind of. We are sufficiently strong that the government needs our help, but not strong enough that we can reject the request."

I could feel the profound regret and ambition in her voice.

She truly believed that soon, she won’t need to respect such requests, and she will be able to reject them.

Even if it came directly from the government.

Her eyes left mine, glancing at the playing news.

"I don’t know how long it would take, I am just glad that we were able to hold off the labyrinth break in our Snombi until the Ursa Guild joined and tamed the dungeon core again." she said calmly.

However, her words surprised me.

Their team wasn’t the one that tamed this dungeon?

I was under the impression that she was the strongest and she was the one taming it.

"Haha," Claire laughed at my look, gently raising her bandaged hand and gesturing for me to come closer.

"I am glad that you’re finally gaining interest in getting stronger, but you truly chose the worst time to gain it." she chuckled.

I could only laugh along with her, not being able to tell her how I had no power over it.

I didn’t even know how the fuck I crossed over into this world. Everything felt new, and I was learning more things with every passing moment.

As I reached beside her bed, she raised her hand, wincing a little before putting it over mine.

"I will be okay." she said with full confidence.

Woman, don’t you know that’s the most cliche deathflag yet?

The sentimental, confident farewell that will lead to your death and me gaining a huge motivational boost that will help me defeat a demon god or some shit?

"Oh yeah? Okay after telling me that even your whole team cannot defeat those?" I pointed at the TV where clips of monsters destroying cities were playing.

Claire scoffed, "Who told you we are going there? We will be going to the tier three labyrinths. I don’t have a death wish, mister."

She put a little more effort in her arm, slapping my hand off the handrail and making me lose my balance.

But it seems she already predicted it, as she was already ready for it.

She wrapped her other arm around my shoulder and stopped me from falling over her, before leaning forward and kissing me on my lips.

The moment our lips met, I felt the surrounding noises phase out. My focus was forcefully diverted to the feeling of how soft her lips felt against mine.

Her arm tightened, pulling me closer as she kept sucking on my lips before prying my mouth open and sliding her tongue in.

I pulled myself out of the daze, wrapping my hand gently around her waist, careful not to touch her wounds as I kissed her back passionately.

My tongue tried to put up an honourable fight against hers but alas, it was easily defeated by my high-levelled dominant girlfriend.

She was still holding me tightly as if she had no intentions of letting me go, but good for her, I had none.

By the time I came back to my senses and paused our makeout sesh for a breath, I realized that my knee was already on her bed, nearly touching her plastered foot.

Her right arm, which was bandaged around the wrist, was in my hair, while the left was around my shoulders.

My hand positions were tricky, as I had to avoid all the spots where she was bruised or bandaged. Not that it mattered though.

Claire stroked my hair, looking in my eyes without a blink, a faint smile playing on her lips.

"Any more questions?" she winked, licking her lips seductively.

"Yeah, a couple more."

I chuckled, before sealing our lips for a few more long questions and answers...

*Knock Knock*

After I don’t know how long passed, we were disturbed by the sounds of door knocking.

Claire cleared her throat, gently pushing me off her bed before saying, "Come in."

The door knob turned and the door was flung open as Eva walked in with a couple plastic bags full of containers.

She kicked the door shut before coming in and keeping the polybags on a table, squinting her eyes at us.

She was looking at us as if she was some kind of a detective in an ancient film, all she lacked was a good pipe and black and white graphics.

"Seriously?" she looked unamused, staring at our slightly wrinkled clothes and messy hair, "Good thing I added the sleep inducement indeed."

"Yea yea, what did you bring for food?" Claire easily shrugged her off.

Eva, who had a displeased expression, suddenly grinned when she heard Claire asking about food.

"Food, right, right." she untied one polybag’s knot, taking out a plastic plate that was wrapped in thin plastic foil.

It was already filled with food that looked cold and entirely unappetizing.

Boiled rice, beans, a dry piece of meat and a lot of salad that included lettuce, cucumber, carrots and even radish.

Or at least that’s what those vegetables looked like, I can’t be sure what they are called here.

"Seriously, Eva?" Claire asked with wide, unblinking eyes.

She looked like someone who was just stabbed in the back by her most trusted partner.

"What, Clay?" Eva mimicked Claire’s expression, mocking.

But before Claire could burst out in fury, Eva continued, "If you don’t like it, then complain to the Laby hospital."

Claire, who was indeed going to let out a string of curses, swallowed her words back.

"I ain’t eating all that." she pouted.

Eva harrumphed, "You don’t have a choice. Who told you to go drink like a drunkard and make ruckus?"

Without giving Claire a chance to speak, she continued:

"And not only that, you didn’t even apologize! You instead started to beat them up for talking loudly!" Eva scolded.

"But they were loud! And rude!" Claire protested, "Who the fuck do they think they are?!"

Eva raised a finger and scoffed, "The fiance of the vice guild leader of the Sanguini?"

"Sanguini? Since when are we supposed to be scared of that rag tag bunch of retards?"

"Since you decided to get so drunk that you cannot even dodge properly." Eva shook her head, "Stop arguing like a child and eat. That’s your prescribed diet as it’s rich in vitamins that make your bones heal faster, or something."

Finally taking out a small tetrapack of flavoured milk, Eva tossed it over to Claire before ignoring the pouting blonde beauty.

Instead, she turned towards me.

"Aaron, wanna eat some pizza?" she said, giving Claire a side-eye.
