My Servant System-Chapter 1300 - 1299: Challenging Trials (4)
"So what is it that causes you to have such a strong aversion to people utilizing magic during their fights? You seem to be rather... strongly against it, at least from my observations."
The journey towards wherever it was that we were going was a long, boring one, and since there were only a handful of monsters that thought we were worthy prey we had little to do besides walk, so I decided that opening a dialogue with the Demon Wolf would be worth the effort and time.
Even more so since it kept my mind from wandering into dangerous territory, and especially since there were things that I still wanted to know about her that pertained to her actions and how I should treat her - and what I should avoid doing - going forwards during this forced time together.
Glancing back at me for breaking the silence, the Demon Wolf pursed her lips and caused the various scars - deep and faint - to wiggle around her face as she thought it over, while that silver eye flashed again as she pinned me down with it.
It was like a damn spotlight catching me outside at night; all encompassing, forcing me onto a stage, and making me feel like there was no escape at all from her eye, which could see all of me...
Suffocating was definitely a word I would use to describe her neutral gaze, and prolonged exposure to it seemed like it would be harmful, so when she turned away I let out the breath I didn't realize I had been holding and relaxed a little, letting some of the tension out of my shoulders.
"It isn't that I am against it, nor that I am angry that people would decide to utilize it in their fights. It is a tool in your arsenal that can help guarantee victory, after all, and victory is what matters. However, those who overly rely on something like magic develop terribly, and if it is ever taken from them...
That is what causes my dislike of spell swords. Of people who fight with magic in close quarters. They have created a crutch for themselves and haven't realized it, and then they become arrogant and easily butchered because they have a talent that few can claim. You have treaded that path during our training, and it is why I broke you back then."
The reminder of that hellish week spent training beneath this Demon Wolf was enough to make me shudder, and again she glanced back at me, but this time it was with a smirk as she added "You are right to fear that memory. It is a reminder that you are capable of dying, that there is someone stronger then you who can take that magic you pride yourself in and use it against you.
Yes you can cast your magic fast, but you cannot confidently claim that all of your spells can stop all of your opponents. So if they get close enough to you, and they have shrugged off a spell or two, what can you do to them besides roll over and die like the good dog you are?"
Her smirk widened a little as another shudder slowly climbed up my spine, and it was clear she was taking a lot of enjoyment from this despite causing me to fear her a little more, my original purpose for asking the question now dashed into millions of pieces in my mind...

"That makes things a whole lot easier for us."
Mom Chordeva cracked her neck and stared down apathetically at the warring battalions below, the sound of their weapons crashing against shields and armor ringing throughout the forest as they fought to slaughter one another.
A trial about finding and killing two targets each that we were not allowed to tell one another about had become a little simpler now that we realized all of the potential candidates for this trial were down below us.

After searching for so long we found them, and it really was going to make it easier even if there was the risk of them dying before we reached them; the trial was a simplistic one that had us searching for two targets each that we had to kill, and if we killed both of our targets we got a better reward.
If we killed only one target we still got something, but I had no idea how 'lesser' of a reward it would be, and apparently if we didn't kill either target the trial just spat us back out and considered itself completed, meaning we wasted our time and the potential reward here, which was a large quantity of metals of our choosing.
My targets were actually quite simple; they were apparently 'Paladins' of the Xeralite Church that wielded ceremonial great spears and had feathered helmets, shields and engraved pauldrons with scripture on them.
There were only a handful of people down there that matched that description, and although we couldn't communicate to one another who our targets were I could still look at their gaze and follow it to get a clue.
Although it was a simple trial, the battle below was massive, and the soldiers in it looked quite strong, so even though we were at an advantage of sorts I really did need to make sure I found my targets so I could get the best reward...
There were more descriptors that had been given to me that I could use, like how one was blonde and the other had a cut that robbed them of an eye, or that they both wielded Wind Magic... it helped narrow it down, but there were still well over ten thousand people below us fighting, so...
"Well, let's get this hunt started. Try and get at least one of your marks, and lets... I guess we should move together, hm? Attempt to find your mark and guide us towards them, and we'll keep the killing to a minimum. Aim to maim and let them kill one another so that we don't fail this by killing someone else's target."
