"Can't hold her liquor, can she? Actually got drunk."

Shin supported Yoruichi as they made their way back to the Second Division barracks. Her face was flushed, and she could barely stand on her own.

"Drunk? I'm not drunk! Where am I drunk?" Yoruichi slurred, waving her arms. "I can still drink! I'm gonna drink that woman Unohana under the table!"

Her shouting drew the attention of several passing Shinigami, and just their luck, they ran right into Shunsui Kyoraku.

"My, my, what are you two up to, all tangled up like that? Could it be..."

"Could it be what?" Unohana's voice suddenly cut in, sending a shiver down Kyoraku's spine.

"Captain Kyoraku, I've had a bit to drink. Right now, I might not be able to tell a Shinigami from a Hollow. You understand, don't you?"

"Oh, dear, I just remembered I have some urgent business back at the Eighth Division. I'll be on my way, ahaha."

Kyoraku beat a hasty retreat. He knew exactly what Unohana was implying—she wanted to cut him down. If he didn't leave now, he might not leave at all.

"What are you doing here?" Shin asked, looking at Unohana.

"I came to check on her. It's not convenient for you to take care of her, so I'll do it myself." Unohana smiled, taking Yoruichi from Shin. A playful glint appeared in her eyes.

"You can head back, Shin. Yoruichi can stay at the Fourth Division barracks for the night."

"Alright then, I'll head back." Shin glanced at Unohana, then nodded.

With that, Unohana helped Yoruichi back towards the Fourth Division. The moment they were inside, she let go.

Yoruichi stumbled and fell to the ground.

"Damn it, what was that for? You did that on purpose, didn't you?" Yoruichi glared at Unohana.

"Why not continue the act?"

Unohana looked at Yoruichi with amusement. She had known all along that Yoruichi was faking it.

"How did you know?" Yoruichi dropped the charade. Shin wasn't here, so there was no point in pretending anymore.

"It was simple. You were too obvious. Your acting is terrible. You probably couldn't fool anyone with that performance."

"Hmph, someone fell for it. Shin believed me," Yoruichi said with a snort.

"Did he? Do you really think he fell for it? He just didn't call you out. You can't honestly believe he didn't see through it, right? Don't underestimate his perception."

Even she had seen through it, so of course Shin had. Unohana was certain of it.

"You keeping me here... you're not planning something, are you?"

Yoruichi looked at Unohana suspiciously. She had a feeling Unohana was up to no good and that she needed to be on her guard.

"No, I was just worried 'you' were up to no good by pretending to be drunk."

Unohana said flatly. "You can stay here for the night. You can leave tomorrow."

With that, Unohana ignored Yoruichi, who was left wondering if Shin had really seen through her act. If he had, why didn't he say anything?

———————————

On his way back, Shin ran into Kyoraku again.

"That was close. I almost lost my life back there," Kyoraku said, looking genuinely shaken.

"So what are you doing in front of me? I'm warning you, you creepy old man, stay away from me. Don't you know your reputation in the Seireitei is in the gutter?"

Shin took a few steps back, putting some distance between them.

"And whose fault is that?!"

Kyoraku shot back, looking genuinely aggrieved. "My reputation with the ladies is in tatters, and it's all your fault!"

Ever since Shin had joked about Kyoraku being gay, the rumor had spread like wildfire, and now every Shinigami in the Seireitei believed it.

The female Shinigami avoided him, and the male Shinigami avoided him too. He had no idea how it had gotten so out of hand, but the root of the problem was undoubtedly Shin. If he hadn't said it, his reputation wouldn't be in this state.

"Ahem, I can assure you, I'm not the one who spread that rumor," Shin said. And he was being honest.

"It doesn't matter anymore. I've accepted it. In a few decades, no one will remember," Kyoraku said. His attempts to explain had been fruitless, so he was just going to let time do its work.

"Do you need something?" Shin didn't think Kyoraku was just here for a chat.

"I came to find you."

"What for?"

Shin asked Kyoraku. If it was a simple matter, he might help. If it was complicated, then he could forget it.

"I need you to investigate the matter of the disappearing souls in the Rukongai."

"You're giving me a mission? Is this from Old Man Yamamoto?" Shin asked with a roll of his eyes.

"It's not from Old Man Yamamoto. It was a request from Shinji Hirako, but I'm a bit busy at the moment."

"Then go ask Jushiro Ukitake. You two are close—he should be the one helping you."

If it were an order from Yamamoto, Shin might have considered it, since he still wanted to make some money off the old man. But a request from Kyoraku? He didn't have time for that.

"I would have, but he's not in the Seireitei. He went to the World of the Living. You're the one I'm most familiar with, so I came to you."

"Alright, I'll consider it. But first, let's talk about compensation. You're not expecting me to work for free, are you?"

"You want something in return? Fine. But you'll have to ask Shinji Hirako for it."

"Then forget it. That cheapskate? I'd be lucky to get a bean out of him."

Shin turned and left. Kyoraku was about to chase after him, but he sighed and gave up. Knowing Shin, he wouldn't do anything without a reward.

"Looks like I'll have to do it myself. If you hadn't asked me, Shinji, I wouldn't be doing this tedious work," Kyoraku complained.
