Shin said to Yoruichi before vanishing in a flash, giving her no chance to refuse—which he knew she absolutely would.

The moment he was gone, Soi Fon's voice cracked.

"Lady Yoruichi, he's... gone."

Yes, she was truly on the verge of tears. While Shin was there, Soi Fon had put on a stubborn front, but now she felt incredibly wronged.

"There, there, Soi Fon, don't cry." Yoruichi patted her head, a gentle smile on her face. "I have a difficult mission for you. Do you think you can handle it, Soi Fon?"

"I guarantee I'll complete it!" Soi Fon instantly straightened up, her wronged expression replaced by one of serious determination.

Though her image of Yoruichi had taken a hit just moments ago, Soi Fon's faith in her captain was unshaken. In Soi Fon's eyes, Yoruichi was still someone to be revered.

"Excellent. I have high hopes for you, Soi Fon. This difficult mission is all yours. Make sure you do a thorough job."

With that, Yoruichi handed Soi Fon the "difficult and important" mission—which was, of course, copying the Second Division regulations.

Even though Shin had explicitly told her not to have anyone else do it, Yoruichi now had an excuse. Shin had run off, so she could just say she was busy with the Second Division business. It was a pretty good reason.

"Lady Yoruichi..." Soi Fon stared at her, dumbfounded. The heroic image in her mind shattered once again.

"I wonder where that guy ran off to," Yoruichi muttered to herself, clenching her teeth. "My guess is he's off on a date with some vixen."

"Um, Lady Yoruichi... do you have feelings for the captain?" Soi Fon asked, tilting her head.

Thwack!

"Ow, that hurts!" Soi Fon clutched her head, crouching down as tears welled in her eyes.

"Don't talk nonsense, you little brat. What do you know about love?" Yoruichi chided her.

Soi Fon felt wronged. 'I may be young, but I'm not naive.'

A faint blush colored Yoruichi's cheeks, unseen by Soi Fon, who was now miserably copying the squad rules for her. Yoruichi felt not a shred of guilt for bullying Soi Fon—in fact, she felt rather pleased with herself.

Yoruichi's guess wasn't entirely wrong. Shin's business did involve a woman, but it wasn't some vixen—it was Retsu Unohana.

And it was Unohana who had invited him. If Yoruichi hadn't returned, Shin would have already left to meet her.

"Captain Unohana, did you call me here just for a meal?"

Shin asked, looking at the lavish spread on the table.

"Have you forgotten? Today is your birthday," Unohana reminded him.

"Huh, my birthday?"

Shin thought for a moment. He had indeed told Unohana his birthday once. He didn't usually pay much attention to it, but seeing that she had gone to the trouble of celebrating it for him, he was genuinely touched.

"The Seireitei has been so peaceful lately," Shin remarked, sitting down with Unohana. "So peaceful it's almost boring."

"Is such a peaceful life not to your liking?"

Unohana said with a smile. Hearing such words from her would have been unimaginable in the past, but her personality had changed a great deal.

"A peaceful life is nice, but if it stays this way forever, it gets a little dull. I have a feeling something big is about to happen in the Soul Society," Shin said with a mysterious smile.

Unohana's expression turned curious. "And I suppose this has something to do with you?"

"Nah, it has nothing to do with me. I won't be getting involved this time. I just want to watch the show."

Shin shook his head with a laugh. Getting involved would be pointless—he much preferred being a spectator.

The event he was referring to, of course, was Aizen's plot. It was already in motion, and while no one else had noticed, Shin, who had been keeping a close eye on him, knew exactly what was happening. Of course, Aizen had no idea he was being watched.

After all, among the Gotei 13, Shin was known for keeping a low profile and rarely causing trouble.

"I must admit, I'm curious about what this 'something' is."

Unohana was intrigued, but she didn't press him for details. One of the best things about her was that she never asked about things Shin didn't want to talk about.

"Let's put that aside for now. Let's eat. We can't let all your hard work go to waste."

Shin said, looking at the food Unohana had prepared. Her cooking had gone from terrible to top-tier, a testament to the effort she had put in.

After being ditched by Shin, Yoruichi had pondered the situation, then promptly dumped the work on poor Soi Fon. Whether Soi Fon could handle it or not was her problem now.

"What are you doing here?" Unohana asked, her tone clearly unwelcoming. Yoruichi had a habit of showing up at the worst times, and it was starting to get on her nerves.

"I'll come here whenever I please. What's it to you?"

Yoruichi shot back with a huff, though she had to admit, she had been spending a lot of time at the Fourth Division lately.

But that was all Shin's fault. If he, her captain, didn't keep running off to the Fourth Division, she wouldn't have to chase after him.

"It's all Shin's fault," Yoruichi grumbled, glaring at him.

"Hey, what does this have to do with me? I'm here to celebrate my birthday. Unohana prepared this for me," Shin said to Yoruichi.

"Your birthday? How come I didn't know? You told her but not me?" Yoruichi suddenly felt a sour pang of jealousy, as if she'd swallowed a bottle of vinegar.

"You never asked. Why would I tell you? Am I supposed to just randomly announce when my birthday is?" Shin said with a shrug.

Yoruichi sat down, not standing on ceremony. She'd freeloaded enough meals here to feel right at home.
