Natural Disasters Strikes: I stockpiled like crazy!-Chapter 248: Mental Diagnosis
The two uncles quickly helped change the beds.
At this time, Baoyin came in carrying a pot of warm water.
"Sister Nan, here it is!"
"Miss Yu, let me." The older guard took the pot and placed it on the desk.
"Baoyin, bring the medicine bag here," Nanzhi said, giving her a look. She did have a bag to cover her bringing out things from the space.
"Okay, just a minute!" Baoyin understood and quickly brought a bag to Nanzhi’s side.
Because the office was small, the two uncles and Baoyin left and closed the door.
Outside, the eight children stared worriedly toward the room. They had heard Wang Ziqing’s screams and feared something terrible had happened.
"Uncle, what happened to Auntie?"
"Did she get hurt?"
"Can we see Auntie?"
The uncles put away their anxious expressions and forced gentle smiles.
"Don’t worry. Madam Wang is giving birth. Soon, we will welcome her child."
Baoyin crouched down and spoke softly to the children.
"The uncles are right. Let’s go to the swings and give Auntie some space. Oh, I found some candies on the road. Who wants to try them?"
Hearing that Wang Ziqing was not hurt, the children’s worries faded as they followed Baoyin.
"Me! Me! Big sister!"
"I haven’t had candy in a long time!"
"Wu, this tastes like strawberries!"
"Mine tastes like milk!"
Gradually, the heavy atmosphere lifted.
"I hope Madam Wang delivers safely," the uncles murmured in prayer.
Nanzhi opened the bag and pretended to take out things. It were hospital gown, gloves, and a mask. She gave the same set to Uncle Wang.
Uncle Wang and Wang Ziqing were dumbfounded and were slow to react: She even has hospital supplies?!
Not waiting for Uncle Wang’s query, she went under the covers, wiped the area with a warm towel, and checked. There was no crowning.
She emerged between Wang Ziqing’s knees.
"Madam Wang, I still can’t see the baby’s head. Try to push. Breathe slowly. In... out... In... out..." she instructed.
Uncle Wang fought back dizziness and followed her rhythm.
"In... out... in... out..."
Wang Ziqing screamed as she pushed.
Nanzhi checked again, but there were still no signs.
"Let’s try again. You’re doing fine," Nanzhi encouraged, her voice calm and steady. "Look at me. Inhale... push!"
"Come on, daughter-in-law... push... push!" Uncle Wang urged from the side.
Wang Ziqing took another deep breath and pushed.
"Ah!"
Nanzhi checked for the third time but still saw no sign of the baby.
"Still nothing. Try again!"
Another hour passed, and there was still no crowning.
The labor room grew heavy and silent. Wang Ziqing’s body trembled with exhaustion; sweat slicked her hair to her forehead. Her hands clutched the sheets, her eyes barely open.
She was running out of strength. Yet the baby still had not come out.
Anxious, Uncle Wang wiped her sweat and lifted the water to her lips.
"Daughter-in-law, hang on. Don’t faint..."
He turned his head, but when he saw Nanzhi shaking her head, despair crept in.
"Xiao Nan, could something be wrong?" he asked cautiously.
Wang Ziqing no longer had the strength to push. Her voice cracked.
"Miss Lu... I don’t care what happens to me... just save my child."
Uncle Wang’s heart sank.
"What nonsense are you saying? Don’t say such ominous things! Both you and my grandchild will be fine!"
Nanzhi frowned. The baby’s position was correct. At eight months, labor should not be this prolonged. So why was the baby not coming out?
"Father-in-law, I’m really tired..." Wang Ziqing murmured, breathless.
"If something really happens, just take care of the child. I won’t blame you." These were her last words before her head sank to the pillows.
Uncle Wang’s fear intensified when Wang Ziqing fainted. She had not eaten properly for a long time and had suffered severe morning sickness. Her body had finally reached its limit, even with the water from Nanzhi’s space.
"Daughter-in-law!" No matter how many times Uncle Wang called, Wang Ziqing did not respond. His mind went blank, and he began to blame himself.
"It’s my fault. I didn’t prepare well enough! I should have gone to the base even at the risk of my own life! My son, your father has failed you!"
Nanzhi checked Wang Ziqing’s pulse and quickly reassured him.
"She’s fine. She just fainted, Uncle Wang."
Uncle Wang could not help but plead. If Wang Ziqing had not been holding his hand, he might have knelt on the spot.
"Xiao Nan, I know I’m asking too much, but I truly have no one else to turn to. Please... please... save them. Uncle Wang will do anything for you!"
Nanzhi let out a tired breath.
"Uncle Wang, I need some peace and quiet so I can focus. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of them both—mother and child."
Uncle Wang hesitated, but he could see that Nanzhi was already exhausted. He complied, afraid his presence might disturb her.
"Alright, Xiao Nan."
Once the door clicked shut, Nanzhi brought out the ultrasound machine from her space, along with lithium batteries.
She needed Uncle Wang to leave; otherwise, explaining the device would be complicated.
The monitor buzzed, and not long after, a gray-green image appeared in her hand. She scanned the uterus, tracing the shapes and flows, her eyes hardening.
No wonder the baby wouldn’t come out. The umbilical cord was looped around its neck.
Her mind raced. This was beyond her usual expertise. But as she looked at the life on the monitor, she could not do nothing.
[Why don’t you use your mental power?]
Nanzhi’s brows wrinkled.
"Easy for you to say."
When controlling objects or blowing up alien beasts, she had nothing to consider. This matter was entirely different. She couldn’t see it directly, couldn’t touch it, and could not tell how much force was too much. She had to account for the frequent contractions and identify the cord precisely under layers of skin, muscle, fat, veins, blood vessels, organs, and amniotic fluid. One wrong move could tighten the cord, cut off blood flow, or worse, kill the baby.
[If you don’t decide soon, the life force of that child will run out.]
Nanzhi’s heart tightened.
[You don’t have a choice.]
"How much time do I have left?" she asked solemnly and urgently.
[About two hours or less. Situation may change.]
Nanzhi’s body went cold. There was no more time to stall.
She closed her eyes and decided to follow the system’s advice. She tested the mental exploration on herself first, targeting her lower abdomen to familiarize herself with the human body’s structure. Her main worry was accurately locating the cord without touching anything else.
Sensing energy signatures was easy. Her current mental exploration worked by sensing patterns in the surroundings and sending back feedback. The mental threads she sent interacted with objects, matter, and energy; whenever they hit something, they bounced back, giving her a mental echo.
For example, tossing pebbles into water: each pebble creates ripples. Some ripples bounce off rocks, jagged and sharp; some bounce off leaves, soft and wavy. Her threads and spar were the pebbles and water, and energy signatures or pulses were the objects.
Alien beasts gave off chaotic, jagged pulses. Ability users emitted structured waves, colored by their attributes.
She had learned this during prior Mental Exploration.
But one thing remained she didn’t explore yet: the human body.
Nanzhi carefully divided her mental power into hair-thin strands and spread them outward. Her threads lightly bounced off the skin. She hoped this method will work.
The strands crept deeper, from skin to muscles, to fat, to veins and blood vessels. As they moved, they sent back feedback. Each pulse was different, and Nanzhi familiarized every pattern.
Unbeknownst to her, two stone monoliths lit up within her Mind Palace.
After what felt like an eternity, Nanzhi opened her eyes. She wasted no time. She moved to Wang Ziqing’s side, threading her mind gently through the mother’s abdomen. Each layer responded differently: the skin was soft, the muscles resistant yet pliable, the fluid shifted with each pulse. The baby moved subtly with contractions. Her senses strained as she distinguished the cord’s delicate pulse from the mother’s heartbeat, blood vessels, and amniotic fluid.
This was the hardest part.
Time stretched. Every second felt like an hour. Nanzhi guided the currents of fluid, the contractions, and the baby’s small movements, nudging everything into alignment. The cord loosened fractionally, then shifted again. Her breath caught. One misstep, one misread pattern, and the baby could suffocate before it even emerged.
Then, slowly, so slowly it almost felt unreal—the baby’s head began to descend.
There’s crowning!
Nanzhi moved back to her original position, maintaining her mental power with extreme focus.
Wang Ziqing trembled with another contraction. Nanzhi’s mind threaded through the subtle, invisible currents again, ensuring that each movement did not tighten the cord, each pulse flowed correctly, and the baby moved safely forward.
Beads of sweat dribbled down Nanzhi’s scalp, soaking her hair and back.
Almost there... just a little more... she whispered.
Finally, a wail cut through the silence.
Outside, Uncle Wang and the others, who had been shrouded in despair, heard a piercing, unmistakable cry.
The door opened, revealing Nanzhi carrying a small baby wrapped in a towel. Her face was lined with obvious fatigue, yet she still forced her body to move to deliver the good news.
"Both the mother and child are safe."
Uncle Wang sank to the floor. Every worry, every fear, every moment of despair melted in an instant. Relief, gratitude, and awe tangled in his chest.
"Thank you... thank you, Xiao Nan...I don’t know how to ever repay you..."
Nanzhi gave one last look at the baby before passing him to Uncle Wang. Though mentally drained, the moment was emotionally rewarding.
