Chapter 249: You need to do something for me!

Entrance of the suburbs, 400 meters from the Children’s Park. This was the spot where Nanzhi had been grinding EXP before parting with Zhao Lin and the others.

The four of Lin Weihao had just finished killing a group of alien beast hounds and rats, harvesting twenty-three spars.

"Brother Lin, should we continue further?" Feng Rang asked, wiping sweat from his brow. The afternoon sun scorched the neighborhood, making him uncomfortable. The last time they had come here, sister-in-law had been like a hungry wolf, chasing every alien beast without mercy. Even the infant rats retreating into drainage pipes hadn’t been spared.

There shouldn’t be any more alien beasts left. These twenty-three creatures were likely drawn here by the noises the group had made the other day.

Lin Weihao’s eyes swept over the suburbs.

To the left of the road stood a small school, a modest business district, and the orphanage. To the right were rows of apartments, private houses, and a few villas. They had already scoured the area for jades and other useful items; the place was essentially empty.

Nanzhi wanted to escort the children and Uncle Wang’s people to the base, so she had asked him to at least make it look believable that they had found salvageable vehicles. Lin Weihao also wanted to check and clear their escort route ahead of time.

Bingwen used his metal ability to clear debris from the road, saving energy for later.

"Where’s the next stop after this?" Lin Weihao asked.

Bingwen picked up a map. "Heyuan Road. There’s a gas station, bus transit hub, truck rest stops, some small shops, and motels."

With a wave of his hand, Lin Weihao summoned a modified bus from his space. It had been reinforced by Hei Qian and supplied by Nanzhi and Bingwen. The other vehicles were too small to accommodate everyone, and separating forces would make the journey harder.

It was afternoon, and the sun beat down on the empty streets. They did not linger.

The noises from the one-sided battle echoed through the quiet neighborhood.

In one of the three-story villas, two men dragged their exhausted, injured bodies to the window.

When they saw four human figures at the suburb entrance, their expressions shifted immediately.

If Nanzhi had been there, she would have recognized the two men as Lan Fuyou and Lu Jian.

They had escaped the mutant frogmen, but not unscathed.

Lan Fuyou’s right arm had been caught by a mutant frogman’s tongue. The bones were broken, leaving his arm dangling uselessly at his side. He would never use it again; he was practically crippled.

Lu Jian’s right leg had been pierced by a wind blade, tearing ligaments. Now he could not walk properly without support.

Even from this distance, Lan Fuyou recognized Lin Weihao instantly.

"Lin Weihao! He’s still alive!" Lan Fuyou hissed through gritted teeth. If that bastard had made it here, he must have encountered those frog monsters along the way. So why was he alive and unharmed? Why was I the only one injured?

Rage boiled within him.

Ever since Lin Weihao spearheaded the Lan Family’s impeachment, Lan Fuyou had wanted to tear that man’s face apart.

Not only had Lin stopped the impeachment, he had destroyed the Lan Family’s businesses overnight, including underground operations. The family vaults were emptied, and even Swiss bank accounts were untouched no longer. The Lan Family had nearly been destroyed in a single night.

Lan Fuyou had been forced to flee like a rat, facing charges of human trafficking, illegal firearm possession, second-degree murder, and smuggling prohibited drugs.

It was not hard to guess who had orchestrated the Lan Family’s downfall. Only Lin Weihao had the manpower, resources, and motive.

Previously, Lan Fuyou had feared Lin Weihao. After losing his arm, that fear vanished. Seeing the man alive and unscathed, he felt a burning frustration inside him.

"I don’t see Lu Nanzhi," Lu Jian said cautiously, noting she was not among the four. "The girl who defied your orders before. Could she have perished on the way?" He smirked inwardly, hoping it was true given his poisoned state. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Lu Nanzhi? That girl’s name is Lu Nanzhi? From your Lu Family?" Lan Fuyou’s hand shot forward, grabbing Lu Jian by the collar and squeezing. "Are you screwing with me? Is your family secretly in cahoots with Lin Weihao? Did you have a hand in the Lan Family’s downfall?"

The Lu Family’s influence and connections were far smaller than Lan’s. They had some dealings with the Lan and Zhou families’ underground businesses. With Lin Weihao’s ruthlessness, the Lu Family should have been destroyed, but they had only suffered minimal losses—unlike Lan’s.

"Could it be that you knew of her strength and deliberately encouraged me to fight that woman? Well played, Lu Jian! I saved your mother and uncle, and this is how you repay me?" Lan Fuyou’s eyes burned with rage. He had been generous, and they had played him all along.

A space ability user was not indispensable to Lan Fuyou. He could have simply tortured Lu Jian for the supplies and found another replacement.

Lu Jian dared not offend him. He still needed this lecherous pig’s help to return to the base, reunite with his mother, and take the antidote for his poison.

"No! You’ve got it all wrong! The Lu Family cut ties with Lu Nanzhi long ago! Her father was kicked out for embezzling company funds! My mother helped confiscate their assets! We have been at odds since childhood! She even caused me losses! That is why I loathe her. I have no idea about her strength, and I have no intentions of using you. You must believe me!"

Lan Fuyou’s grip did not loosen. Although slow-witted at times, he had built an underground business and met all kinds of people. Trust did not come easily to him.

"Then why didn’t you tell me her identity earlier? Did you also know Lin Weihao was inside the base all along? Did you and your uncle also tampered with the scouts and deliberately hide information about the frogs to get me killed, hoping your uncle would take the base?" Lan Fuyou’s eyes narrowed.

Lu Jian and Lu Chenyu were not close. How could he know how Lu Chenyu managed the base? As for the last part, it could not be denied. He knew his uncle’s personality and suspected designs for the base owner’s seat.

Lan Fuyou’s emotions were unstable, and his arm made him disoriented. He could not risk speaking his thoughts aloud. Lu Jian had to coax him carefully.

"I absolutely didn’t know about Lin Weihao! I didn’t mention Lu Nanzhi because I thought she wasn’t important! You have to believe me! If you have doubts, ask my mother or uncle. They planned Lu Nanzhi’s parents’ car accident to seize her father’s shares! How could we possibly be on good terms with her?"

That revelation calmed Lan Fuyou somewhat. He recalled the chaos in the Lu Family after the patriarch’s death, with everyone vying for the chairman’s seat.

Lan Fuyou snickered but his eyes still held anger. "What you said better be true. If not, I, Lan Fuyou, will not let you off."

Lu Jian sucked in a cold breath as his leg touched the floor, forcing a smile. "T-thank you... Emperor Lan." This lecherous pig! Once we reach the base, I’ll see how mother deals with you!

At that moment, the door opened. A blue-eyed man, battered and bruised, strode in, ignoring the argument. "I found a car. We need to leave."

From a hidden angle, Lu Jian’s eyes lit up. Finally, he could leave!

But Lan Fuyou had other plans.

A sinister grin lifted his lips. "Lu Jian, I’ll believe you for now. But to regain my trust, you need to do something for me." His gaze flicked to Lin Weihao leaving through the window.

Lu Jian’s silence drew a scowl from Lan Fuyou. "What? You don’t want to?"

Lu Jian lowered his head, hiding his expression, and replied reluctantly. "An order from you—how can I refuse? Just tell me what I need to do..." He gritted his teeth secretly.
