Chapter 189: CHARITABLE DEEDS

The sun was setting and the workers in the construction site seemed to be rounding off.

"Goodbye, Miss Aris." Dahlia smiled as she escorted Aristia to the gate. She squinted slightly against the setting sun and raied a hand to her face.

There weren’t many children near the entrance and none of the workers had begun to leave. But Dahlia still lowered her voice.

"The building is almost finished. I checked with the workers and the furnishings are almost finished. In a few more weeks at most, it’ll be ready. I really can’t thank you enough."

Aristia turned to look at the building, then back at Dahlia. It was just as Dahlia had said.

"It’s what I should do for the kingdom." She said in a show of patriotism when it was anything but.

However, this only increased Dahlia’s admiration for her.

’Only six years old, yet already thinking about the kingdom.’

Her small form spewing serious words about helping the kingdom was amusing but also very commendable in Dahlia’s eyes.

Anyone else would find Aristia’s words laughable, asking what this little child did for the kingdom, but not Dahlia who was aware of the great length Aristia had gone in helping not only herself and her sister, but also the children under their care.

Aristia continued.

"If I wanted to build such a thing, of course I had to buy the land."

Yes. She had bought not only the land the sisters’ cottage was on and on extension the cottage itself, but also the surrounding land that served as the open ground.

"It’s good if you all can move in a few weeks. The rooms are cramped. It’s summer and the weather is hot. It could make sleeping uncomfortable."

Thinking about Leilani’s adorable form not sleeping well made Aristia frown. If that happened, there would undoubtedly be dark circles under the girl’s eyes.

[Wouldn’t she look just like a panda? I’m sure she would be even more adorable.] She almost chuckled at the thought.

But just because she thought that way didn’t mean she actually wanted that.

Dahlia nodded. She could guess the reason Aristia was saying this. Hadn’t the princess just come out of Leilani’s room when she saw her?

Suddenly, a slight embarrassment enveloped Dahlia. She knew the conditions weren’t something a favored princess like Aristia was used to.

But their living condition had greatly improved. They would also move to a better place.

And it was all thanks to the child standing in front of her. Who would believe it?

If she told anyone this, they would probably laugh until water spilled out of their eyes.

In the carriage.

The carriage had just begun to move when, all of a sudden, a bird flew in from the window.

"Millie," Aristia slowly and gently rubbed the space in Millie’s neck underneath the feathers.

Millie reverted back to fox form, lying snugly in her arms.

After some time, the carriage slowly entered the gates of the Grand Duke’s Mansion.

"We’ve arrived, princess." Lucas announced.

Aristia got down from the carriage with Adeline’s aid.

The carriage drove away, leaving the two alone.

The surroundings were dark and the only illumination came from the lit mansion.

It was just an hour until dinnertime. Aristia entered into the mansion. Millie continued to lie leisurely in her arms.

Servants walked around the wide corridors busily, still carrying out tasks. They moved so coordinatedly and the only sound that could be heard was the light shuffling of feet and the tapping of shoes on the marble floors.

As usual, they bowed in greeting when Aristia passed them by before continuing their steps.

Aristia headed towards her bedroom. She still had some time to herself before the arrival of dinnertime.

After taking a bath for the night and doing a few things, she headed to the dining room.

"Did Leilani like your gift?" Catherine asked in the middle of dinner.

Everyone turned to Aristia, waiting for her answer.

"She did. She said she loved it very much." Aristia replied, a faint smile playing on her lips.

Catherine and Wilson nodded approvingly with faces that unabashedly said that it was supposed to be that way.

[Just as I thought. These guys are secretly tyrants. What would they do if I said Leilani didn’t like the gift? It’s no wonder Aristia was such a little tyrant. She actually inherited it.]

She cleared her throat and sipped from her glass before looking at her parents.

"The new building will be ready in a few weeks. The Kendall sisters’ and the children will soon move."

Her parents nodded.

All of a sudden, Wilson asked.

"You’ve bought the lands and built on it for the children. If a famine occurs, food will be scarce."

His words ended there, but they could deduce his meaning.

When food became scarce during famine, those children would still have to be fed, right?

According to Aristia’s plan, the building wasn’t only for the children living with Dahlia currently. They would welcome more children.

Likely, most of the children who had no hope would be brought there. It would be a very significant increase.

Even though they would sell the stored food at an affordable price for commoners, it was true that prices of things would undoubtedly rise. Would the sisters be able to provide for all those children?

Their salary was such that it could last them a year which was impressive for a commoner, but when children were added to the equation...

The children needed not only food, but clothing and other necessities. It could become a bit much for the sisters to manage.

However, Wilson wasn’t asking this question because he cared about the sisters or the children, no matter how much the truth hurt. He was just interested in knowing how his daughter would deal with the situation.

To him, Aristia had already done a lot by building a large place like that for children.

The Kendall sisters now had the responsibility to take care of the children. They wouldn’t expect a six year old child to do that for them just because she had helped them.

Aristia paused in the movement of raising her fork to her lips.

She hadn’t thought of this. No. It would be better to say that she had forgotten all about the famine.

[It’s next year.]

She furrowed her brows a bit.

She had decided to build an orphanage. How it ran and the children it housed was now part of her responsibility.

But she wasn’t worrying.

"If a famine happens, the Vanilla Courtyard will increase food prices for aristocracy and slightly for commoners. But aside from that, I will provide what the children need."

The dining room fell silent for a moment at her words, but in the end, her parents didn’t object.

’Anyway, it’s directly helping the kingdom. Aristocracy, nobility in particular, are obligated to ensure the Kingdom’s condition improves.’ Was the thought going on in Wilson and Catherine’s mind.

How else to do it if not by improving the commoners’ lives.

Thinking this, Wilson turned to Aristia.

"Just like you said, the aristocracy will have to make charities to the people to improve the Kingdom. Your plan is very thoughtful, Tia." He praised her.

"Thank you, papa." Aristia beamed.

"When the time comes, I’ll ensure the ladies do not fall back on making charitable contributions to the kingdom. It’s all for the betterment of the kingdom." A soft chuckle escaped Catherine’s lips.

Wilson nodded in agreement, his hand resting on the back of Catherine’s.

[No. It’s just what you want to do to help me. You’re not thinking about the kingdom, you’re thinking about me.] Aristia shook her head mentally.

"Thank you too, mama." She thanked.

She knew that her parents were talking about charitable deeds as a way to make the aristocracy contribute to the orphanage’s upkeep.

If the aristocracy made donations, it would obviously be generous. It would undoubtedly help the orphanage a long way and reduce the effort Aristia had to make and the money she had to put in.

"Of course, it makes us proud that you’re considering the kingdom. The King and Queen are too." Catherine said.

"Fedor has asked us to visit the palace. We will be going in a few days." Wilson said.

"Yes, papa." Aristia and Alaric nodded.

Dinner continued in silence, everyone in their own thoughts. The only sound that could be heard was the clinking of silverware and the pouring sound of liquid.

A while later, the family retreated to their respective rooms and got ready for the night.

Aristia got under the covers, watching the ceiling as she slowly pulled the blanket to her chest. Millie curled up beside her beneath the blanket.

"Goodnight, princess." Adeline blew out the lights.

"Goodnight, Linny." Aristia muttered.

The door to the room closed as Adeline left the room. The room was entirely quiet now.

The only sound left was Aristia’s soft breathing and

A soft yawn escaped Aristia’s lips as sleep finally pulled her in. She still remembered that Wade had asked to see her tomorrow.
