Chapter 262: Trying to woo me

"Oh," Jian Ci said, the single syllable heavy. From that alone, he could tell Yu Xi didn’t remember what had happened last night otherwise he would mention it.

He awkwardly scratched the back of his head as he followed Yu Xi into the kitchen. "You could have messaged me. I thought you were gone."

Yu Xi glanced back, his expression softening. "You were sleeping so well. I just didn’t want to wake you up."

The words eased Jian Ci’s panic, but only slightly. His heart was still racing, torn between relief and the ache of knowing Yu Xi had no memory of the moment he couldn’t forget.

Jian Ci pursed his lips, watching Yu Xi carefully plate the porridge for them. His head throbbed, the hangover still clawing at him. "My head hurts so much," he muttered.

Yu Xi glanced at him knowingly. "We did go overboard last night. We should never do that shit again." He reached into the bag he had brought back earlier and pulled out a bottle of hangover drink. Handing it over, he added with a small smile, "It was a lot of fun though."

"Thanks," Jian Ci said, twisting the cap and taking a sip. The bitter liquid burned down his throat, but relief followed.

Yu Xi carried the bowls to the table, setting them down neatly before sitting. Jian Ci slid into the seat beside him, close enough that their shoulders brushed. "You are so sweet," he said softly.

Yu Xi’s lips curved. "Am I now?"

"Yeah," Jian Ci replied, his voice warm. "Very sweet."

He scooped a spoonful of porridge, the fluffy sweetness melting on his tongue. His discomfort eased instantly, replaced by a quiet joy. "Mmm, this is so good."

Yu Xi chuckled. "My grandpa told me about this place, so I went there to get it."

"He seems to know a lot of spots. Is he a foodie?" Jian Ci asked.

Yu Xi’s eyes flicked toward him, teasing. "Just like a certain someone."

Jian Ci pointed at himself, feigning innocence. "Me?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

"All you can think about is where we are going to eat, what we’re going to eat, what you want to make next," Yu Xi said, amusement lacing his tone.

"So you don’t like it?" Jian Ci asked, his voice dipping uncertainly.

Yu Xi shook his head. "I never said that... I love that about you."

Jian Ci’s breath caught. He bit his lower lip, his legs swaying under the table in barely contained excitement.

Yu Xi took another spoonful, his expression softening. "If you were trying to woo me, you won."

Jian Ci’s heart jumped violently in his chest, the words echoing inside him. He swallowed hard. "Last night... what do you remember?"

Yu Xi leaned back casually, his smile easy. "I remember your heartfelt performance." His eyes gleamed as he added, "It was breathtaking."

Jian Ci’s lips parted, his voice low. "Was it now?"

Yu Xi nodded, smiling at him with quiet certainty. "Yeah. It was."

Jian Ci leaned closer, his voice low, almost teasing. "Are you just being nice to me?" His leg brushed against Yu Xi’s under the table, a subtle tap that carried more weight than he intended.

Yu Xi met his gaze steadily. "I am being honest."

Jian Ci leaned back, a smile tugging at his lips. "Your dance was phenomenal. "

Yu Xi chuckled, shaking his head. "I barely remember much of it. I was fucked up already." His tone was casual, but the truth was heavier. He really didn’t remember. At that point, he had been seeing two Jian Cis, the room spinning, his body moving on instinct. How he even ended up in bed was a mystery.

Jian Ci’s smile faltered. "You don’t remember anything after that?"

Yu Xi paused, his spoon hovering midair. His brows furrowed as ye asked, "No. Why? Did I do something last night?"

Jian Ci’s chest tightened. ’You didn’t do anything... but I did,’ he thought to himself. The memory of the kiss burned in his mind, reckless and unspoken. He swallowed hard, forcing his voice steady. "No. You just passed out, and I brought you upstairs."

Yu Xi nodded, accepting the explanation easily. "Okay."

Jian Ci exhaled, the breath heavy with relief, yet disappointment gnawed at him all the same. It was a storm of conflicting emotions.

When they were in the kitchen, Jian Ci lingered at the doorway, his eyes fixed on Yu Xi’s back as he quietly put away the dishes. The simple domesticity of the moment made Jian Ci’s chest ache with warmth. He cleared his throat, his voice soft but deliberate.

"Little Xi, I want to take you somewhere tomorrow."

Yu Xi turned, meeting his gaze with curiosity. "Sure. Where are we going?"

Jian Ci smiled faintly, trying to mask the nervous flutter in his chest. "It’s a surprise."

Yu Xi’s lips curved. "Sounds fun. Dress code?"

"I will pick clothes for you," Jian Ci said quickly, almost too eagerly.

Yu Xi walked over, ruffling his hair with a teasing grin. "So mysterious."

Jian Ci’s heart soared, his invisible tail wagging with joy. He had a plan, and it was simple: take Yu Xi somewhere special, cook his favorite meal, and finally confess his feelings. But first, he had to deal with his family.

As soon as he left the condo, Jian Ci headed straight home. The house was quiet, too quiet. Jian Rui and Jian Wei were nowhere to be found. Suspicion prickled at him. He called Jian Wei, and only then did he learn they were in his mother’s sanctuary.

Jian Ci’s jaw tightened. He already knew they were discussing things without him.

What he didn’t know was that Seraphyne was considering revoking the mandated blood oath she had placed on Yu Xi. She had made it to protect Jian Ci, to keep him safe in case Yu Xi decided to do what that bastard do to her.

But now, seeing that her son actually loved Yu Xi, she knew it wasn’t right to impede them.

Seraphyne didn’t like the idea of Jian Ci being with an esper. Her own past was scarred by trauma, by experiences that had left her wary and bitter. Yet beneath that, her goal had always been simple: she wanted her children to be happy.

And she refused to let her own pain dictate their futures. Thus she was discussing this matter with her sons.
