Chapter 111: Chapter 111: Julian Hayes Comes to Interview

The weight on my heart was finally gone, and I felt completely refreshed.

After leaving the maid’s house, I went back to the voice acting company with Sebastian Forrest.

It happened to be interview day. I wasn’t in the mood to get involved with the hiring process earlier, but now that I had some free time, I thought I’d go check out the scene.

When we got to the company, Sebastian Forrest turned to Henry Paxton. "You stay with Chelsea."

"Yes, President Forrest."

After Sebastian Forrest left, Henry Paxton and I walked into the voice acting company.

"Miss Joyce..."

The moment I walked in, someone immediately came up to greet me. "Didn’t you say you weren’t coming in today?"

I gave a small laugh. "Don’t mind me, you all carry on with your work. I’m just here to see what’s going on."

The person seemed to let out a quiet sigh of relief before handing me a file. "The candidates who came in for interviews today are all quite qualified, especially this one..."

I glanced at it instinctively, but I froze when I saw the name ’Julian Hayes’. "What is he..."

"You know him too, Miss Joyce?"

I nodded. "He’s a former colleague." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The person’s face lit up. "No wonder a master of his caliber would apply to a small, unknown company like ours! He’s a friend of yours, Miss Joyce."

I couldn’t help but feel a complicated mix of guilt. I obviously hadn’t expected Julian Hayes to be here for an interview. ’Doesn’t that mean he—’

And just as my mind was racing, I suddenly heard an all-too-familiar, gentle voice. "Joyce..."

I spun around instinctively and saw Julian Hayes standing not far away, a gentle look on his face.

"Hayes, what are you doing here for an interview?"

Julian Hayes chuckled. "I wasn’t happy at my old company, so I quit."

I was touched. I knew Julian Hayes wouldn’t have just left Wind-Whisper for no reason. It was the top voice acting company in the country. ’It must be because of me...’

"Hayes..."

But before I could say anything, Julian Hayes smiled. "I just finished talking salary with your manager here. It’s double what I was making before, so I guess I have you to thank."

Hearing him say that only made me feel more indebted to him.

"Are you free for lunch? How about I treat you? I saw a Shandong restaurant downstairs that looks really good."

"How about I treat you instead?" I said quickly.

Julian Hayes didn’t refuse, just nodded with a smile. "Alright."

Just then, however, the smile on his face faded slightly. His gaze fell on something behind me. Confused, I followed his line of sight and saw Henry Paxton, head down, texting someone on his phone...

"This is your turf now. You don’t mind showing me around, do you?" Julian Hayes said, pulling his gaze back as a smile touched his lips.

I quickly nodded. "Of course not."

Despite saying I’d show him "around," I took Julian Hayes straight to the recording studio. As one of the top professional voice actors in the industry, he would naturally recognize the value of the equipment in the room.

"This President Forrest of yours is certainly generous..." Julian Hayes remarked with an unreadable smile, glancing around the room.

"Huh?" I blinked. "You mean Senior Forrest?"

Julian Hayes smiled and nodded. "I looked up the company’s information before I came. I know he’s the man behind the scenes..."

I quickly nodded. "Right. Senior Forrest said he was interested in the voice acting industry, so he started a company. He just doesn’t know the first thing about it, so he asked me to help manage it..."

"What a coincidence..." Julian Hayes’s lips curved into a smile. "It’s almost as if this Master Forrest opened the company just for you..."

As he spoke those careless words, I heard footsteps outside the door. I turned instinctively and saw Sebastian Forrest pushing the door open and walking in.

"Senior Forrest? What are you doing here?"

"I came to see if you were finished," Sebastian Forrest said with a slight smile. Then, he turned his head slightly, his gaze sharp and piercing as he stared directly at Julian Hayes.

"This is Hayes. You’ve met before. He’s here for an interview today..."

Sebastian Forrest’s lips curled. "An interview? My humble establishment is too small. I’m afraid we can’t accommodate a man of Mr. Hayes’s stature."

I looked at Sebastian Forrest in surprise, easily detecting the hostility in his tone.

But—

’How did Hayes get on his bad side before?’

’Why does Sebastian Forrest dislike him so much?’

"It has nothing to do with the size of the establishment. I came for Joyce’s sake. We were colleagues, after all. I have to help her out, make sure she doesn’t get scammed by someone with ill intentions." Julian Hayes’s gaze was fixed on Sebastian Forrest.

The two of them were suddenly locked in a standoff. Despite the distance between them, sparks were flying, and I was caught right in the middle of the crossfire.

"Um..." I quickly spoke up, trying to defuse the tension. "It’s getting late. Why don’t we go get that lunch? My treat!"

Julian Hayes turned to look at me.

But before he could say anything, Sebastian Forrest spoke up in a measured tone. "Fine by me. I happen to be hungry. Let’s go."

It wasn’t a long walk from the company to the restaurant, less than two hundred meters, but I felt on edge the entire way. It was clear the tension between these two was thick enough to cut with a knife.

’Do they really have some old grudge against each other?’

And so, the entire lunch was fraught with tension.

Once we had finished eating, Julian Hayes suggested we head back to the company. He said he’d brought several projects with him that he wanted to discuss with me.

My spirits lifted the moment I heard that.

"Okay!" I nodded eagerly, unable to hide my delight. "You’re amazing, Hayes! You even brought your own projects..."

’A master of the voice acting world, indeed!’

Julian Hayes smiled. "I have a script that I think is quite good. You can take a look at it later. For a new company, the most important thing is to build name recognition."

"Mhm," I nodded quickly, already growing impatient. "Should we head back to the office now, then?"

"Alright."

I stood up at once and glanced at Sebastian Forrest. "Senior Forrest, we’re going to..."

But before I could finish, Sebastian Forrest suddenly spoke up, his voice low. "By the way, there’s something I forgot to tell you..."

"What is it?"

"Your older brother has been hospitalized..."

"What?" I was stunned. "My brother? What happened to him? Is he sick or hurt?"

Sebastian Forrest’s eyes flickered over Julian Hayes’s face before he shrugged helplessly. "I’m not too clear on the specifics. It just happened this morning..."

"Do you know which hospital he’s in?"

"That I do know." Sebastian Forrest’s Adam’s apple bobbed. "Do you want to go see him now?"

I hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Yes."

’Even though we parted on bad terms last time, he is, after all, the only family I have left in this world.’

"Let’s go. I’ll take you there."
