On Our Wedding Day My Husband Announced His First Love Online-Chapter 7: Clara Langley Has Severe Depression
"Shut up!"
My mother-in-law wasn’t about to humor Clara Langley. After glaring at her, she turned to me and asked urgently, "Chelsea, what was that you said about a scandal?"
But before I could speak, Theodore Grant, who was beside me, said in a flat tone, "Mom, the paparazzi were just chasing shadows. It’s all fabricated. I’ve already had my people take care of it."
The moment my mother-in-law heard that, she knew exactly what was going on. She couldn’t help but shoot Theodore a look as she quickly pulled out her phone.
And there it was, on the front page of every major news outlet: Clara Langley’s divorce announcement, coupled with news of a scandal. The accompanying photo was a glaring shot of Theodore Grant holding Clara protectively in his arms!
Even though the paparazzi had been "kind" enough to mosaic Theodore’s face, Noah Brown, who was standing beside him, was fully visible in the photo.
And anyone who knew Theodore Grant also knew Noah Brown.
—SLAM!
My mother-in-law slammed her teacup down, clearly furious. Her gaze sharpened as she stared at Clara Langley. "Theodore might not understand the ins and outs of the entertainment industry, but you should! Clara Langley, I’m warning you. Theodore and Chelsea are about to have their wedding. You’d better not try to pull any stunts!"
"Ma’am..."
"Don’t. This humble home of mine can’t accommodate a star of your magnitude!"
"Hailey, what are you doing?" Vincent Lombard couldn’t watch anymore. He frowned, trying to ease the tension.
My mother-in-law was livid. She shot him a vicious glare. "You shut up!"
Vincent Lombard’s face darkened as he pressed his lips together, but he didn’t say anything else.
But Clara Langley suddenly stood up. "Ma’am, Theodore and I grew up together. Yes, we had a relationship in the past, but now I just see him as a good friend! I didn’t want the paparazzi to take that picture either. It’s not like I could control any of it..."
"It seems I came at a bad time. I’ll just head back for today..." Her voice paused for a moment before she continued righteously, "But that doesn’t mean I’m in the wrong. There’s nothing going on between Theodore and me. Our relationship is completely innocent."
With that, she grabbed her bag and turned to leave, her head held high in defiance.
"Clara..." Seeing this, Vincent Lombard quickly chased after her. "Uh, I’ll see her out..."
Without waiting for my mother-in-law to respond, he was gone in a flash, which only made her even more furious.
For a moment, no one in the living room spoke. The silence was almost unsettling.
"You two are having a wedding?"
Just then, a casual question from Sebastian Forrest broke the silence.
As if relieved that the troublesome Clara Langley was finally gone, a smile returned to my mother-in-law’s face. "That’s right. We never had a ceremony because the old master was critically ill. We just registered the marriage. Now that his health has improved, we’re holding a proper one."
"I see..." The smile on Sebastian Forrest’s lips faded slightly, his lips thinning into a line. "Looks like I came back at just the right time."
Theodore Grant smiled. "Why did you suddenly go into seclusion at the research institute last time? Well, perfect timing. You can celebrate with us now."
Sebastian Forrest instinctively lowered his gaze and said nothing.
...
Soon, dinner was ready, and the table was laden with all sorts of delicacies.
Theodore and Sebastian hadn’t seen each other in a long time, so they naturally had endless things to talk about, though their conversation still revolved around business matters.
Perhaps because of my pregnancy, I felt exhausted, so I went straight upstairs after dinner.
I had planned on waiting for Theodore in our room to have a frank and honest talk with him, but I must have drifted off at some point.
In a daze, I felt someone approach. A pair of strong arms pulled me into an embrace. As warm breath washed over the back of my neck, a hot body pressed against mine, and a pair of large hands began to travel up from my waist...
I woke with a start and quickly grabbed his wrist.
"Did I wake you?" Theodore’s chin was resting in the crook of my neck, his breath fanning across my cheek and sending a tingle through me.
I instinctively turned my face away.
Theodore’s lips landed on my cheek, planting soft kisses as they moved closer to my mouth.
The smell of alcohol on his breath made my stomach churn. I immediately placed a hand against his chest to stop him. "I have to ask you something."
Theodore frowned, seemingly displeased by my rejection.
He propped himself up and looked down at me. "Still jealous of Clara Langley?"
His piercing gaze was overwhelming. I sat up and met his eyes directly. "My mother saw the news about you and Clara Langley today. She was so overcome with anger that she fainted and had to be rushed to the emergency room."
Theodore froze for a second. "Is your mom okay?"
"They revived her. Her life isn’t in danger for now."
Only then did Theodore let out a sigh of relief. He then got up and grabbed the car keys from the table. "Come on, let’s go to the hospital."
I was taken aback. "To do what?"
"To explain everything to your mom in person, of course."
"Explain what?" Thinking of Clara Langley’s ’good friend’ excuse, I felt a surge of nameless anger.
’These days, even men can develop... complicated feelings for each other. And we’re talking about Clara, his unforgettable first love, hiding behind the "just buddies" excuse!’
Theodore pressed his lips together and didn’t say much. Instead, he took out his phone, scrolled for a moment, and then handed it to me.
I frowned slightly.
On the screen was a screenshot of a news report. The picture was a shocking car crash scene, with a man covered in blood lying on a stretcher...
Just as I was wondering why Theodore was showing me something so bizarre, he suddenly spoke. "That’s Clara Langley’s husband. He saved my life years ago. Both his legs were shattered in the accident, and he was permanently disabled..."
I looked up at him, completely astonished. It took me a moment to find my voice. "But... but didn’t Clara Langley just get a divorce?"
"Yes." Theodore nodded. "If it weren’t for me, they would still be a perfect couple, the envy of everyone. So, I’m the one who wronged them..."
’I never would have guessed this was the reason for Theodore’s special treatment of Clara Langley.’
’But even if he feels guilty, there’s no guarantee old feelings won’t resurface...’
"So, your feelings for her..."
Before I could finish, Theodore ruffled the top of my head. "And you say you’re not jealous."
I couldn’t help but glare at him, raising a hand to fix the hair he’d just messed up. "Well, it’s because you got so incredibly nervous when you saw Clara Langley break a single glass..."
’I could understand if he were tense about Clara being in a car accident, especially since her husband was the one who saved Theodore in a crash.’
’But it was just a broken water glass. That’s making a mountain out of a molehill.’
"When her husband was diagnosed as permanently disabled, she tried to kill herself..." Theodore reached out and took my hand, his voice low. "She used the shards of a water glass."
"She might seem carefree and outgoing on the surface, but it’s all an act. She’s been battling severe depression, so she can’t handle any kind of shock."
My jaw dropped in surprise.
’If that’s the case, then Theodore’s unusual behavior around Clara suddenly made sense.’
’But...’
"Feeling indebted is one thing, but we can repay them in other ways. Your relationship is a sensitive one, after all. It would be better if you two had less contact in the future..." I added, still feeling uneasy.
Theodore nodded. "Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing."
Hearing his firm answer, I let out a sigh of relief, but a faint sense of worry remained...
’I just hope Theodore really means what he says and will follow through.’
