Maya Jacobs and the others left soon. But Chloe didn’t wait for anyone. She walked to the roadside, hailed a taxi, and left.

When Jasper walked out of the hotel, Chloe was already long gone. He immediately called her, but after two attempts, there was still no answer.

Jasper’s handsome face was cold and grim, his deep gaze fixed on the distant night.

Henry could clearly sense his boss’s extreme displeasure. He spoke cautiously, "Sir, I believe your wife has already gone home. She probably didn’t wait for you since her colleagues were there."

Jasper’s lips thinned into a hard line and after a moment, he said, "Let’s go home too."

With that, he strode forward.

Sitting in the taxi, Chloe gazed at the myriad lights of the city outside her window, but her mind replayed the scene from the hotel.

Phoebe liked Jasper. It seemed the two of them had some history.

She couldn’t help but wonder if they had been a couple. Everyone had a past, and it wasn’t her place to interfere. Especially with a man like Jasper—there were numerous women who admired him, both at home and abroad. Having an ex-girlfriend was as normal as it got.

But the thought of Jasper being intimate with another woman still made her chest tighten.

Before she knew it, the taxi had stopped in front of the Lockwood Residence.

Chloe paid the fare and got out of the car.

Just then, a familiar voice called out, "Chloe."

Chloe froze for a moment before turning toward the voice.

Jasper had already returned and was waiting for her at the entrance. Henry had been flooring it the whole way back, ’A boss in love is a terrifying thing,’ he lamented inwardly.

Chloe looked at him in surprise. "How did you get back before me?"

Jasper walked up to her. Instead of answering her question, he explained, "I have nothing to do with Phoebe. It’s always been one-sided on her part. I’ve never gone to look her. Don’t get the wrong idea."

At his words, Chloe’s mood seemed to lighten, but her expression remained nonchalant. "Oh." She put on a magnanimous air and smiled. "I wasn’t getting the wrong idea. Even if there was something between you, it was already history, right? Everyone has a past. Don’t worry. I won’t mind."

Jasper was lost in words.

’Won’t mind? Does she not mind his past, or does she not even care about him?’

"Then why didn’t you answer my calls?"

"Calls?" Chloe had been lost in thought the entire ride, with her phone tucked away in her pocket. She quickly pulled it out and saw two missed calls from Jasper. Her phone, she realized, had somehow been set to silent.

"My phone was on silent. I didn’t hear it, sorry." As she spoke, Chloe quickly turned the volume up.

A knot of frustration tightened in Jasper’s chest.

He’d thought she was angry over a misunderstanding and was ignoring his calls on purpose. That was why he’d had Henry floor it all the way back. He wanted to explain things to her as soon as possible. But it turned out this woman didn’t care in the slightest.

Jasper’s deep eyes fixed on her and asked suddenly, "You just said everyone has a past. So, have you had a boyfriend before?"

"No," Chloe answered crisply. She paused, then asked him, "What about you? If not Phoebe, have you been with anyone else?"

Seeing her finally show some concern about his life, the knot of frustration in Jasper’s chest loosened a little. Still, he deliberately teased, "Weren’t you the one who said you didn’t mind?"

"..."

Just as Chloe was about to turn away, Jasper said suddenly, "There has been no one else. Only you."

A barely perceptible smile touched the corners of Chloe’s lips.

Jasper Lockwood it instantly, and his mood was brightened further. "Let’s go inside."

Chloe nodded. "Okay."

The two walked into the estate, and their moon-cast shadows stretching long and clinging together as one.

"I’m suddenly in the mood for a drink," Chloe said.

Jasper glanced down at her. "Red wine?"

"Perfect."

"Then let’s go to the cellar and pick one out."

"Okay."

When they arrived at the wine cellar, Chloe was stunned by the sight. She’d never pegged Jasper as a big drinker, yet here was a massive cellar stocked with an exhaustive collection of world-renowned wines.

Jasper selected a bottle of Romanee-Conti worth millions. They then sat at a table inside the cellar, as the dim lighting created an intimate, charming atmosphere.

Chloe enjoyed drinking, even spirits. She loved the feeling of slight light-headedness, as the feeling gave her a cloud-floating sensation.

She had a high tolerance and rarely got drunk. She usually just reached a pleasant, tipsy state—much like she was now.

The corners of Chloe’s lips curved up as she gently swirled her glass. Her beautiful eyes were fixed on the red liquid within, and she seemed to be in a very good mood.

Jasper gazed at the young woman before him. The light made her fair skin seem to glow, and her delicate, exquisite face was so beautiful it made his heart skip a beat. He was suddenly reminded of the first time he ever saw her.

He had been in Country E on a business trip back then. One evening, he went to a bar with a business partner.

Amidst the cacophony of the bar, his gaze was captured by a coolly beautiful young woman. Of course, she hadn’t just captured his attention. Most of the men in the room were watching her too.

They watched her with covetous eyes but didn’t dare approach. The last man who tried had been beaten brutally and was lying motionless on the floor. His face a bloody mess.

Later, a man whose arms were covered in tattoos entered with a group of thugs, making a beeline straight for Chloe Sterling. Jasper wasn’t one to meddle in others’ affairs, but he had intervened to help her that time. He’d been curious about her, had wanted to get to know her, but she had simply vanished.

"Chloe, why did you go to Country E two years ago?" Jasper asked.

At his question, Chloe froze for a second, then asked in surprise, "You remember seeing me two years ago?"

Jasper’s intense gaze fixed on her face. "A face like yours isn’t easy to forget."

"I was looking for a friend. An online friend, to be precise."

Jasper raised an eyebrow. "Running off to a foreign country by yourself to meet someone from the internet? You’re certainly brave."

Chloe took a sip of wine and said nonchalantly, "I travel alone often. There’s nothing to be scared of."

"Why do you travel alone so often?"

Chloe’s lips curved into a slight smile. "I’m a Pharmacist, and a practitioner of traditional medicine. Naturally, I go where my patients need me."

After gazing at her for a moment, Jasper said softly, "From now on, wherever you want to go, I’ll go with you."

"..."

A strange feeling fluttered in her chest. Chloe took a sip of wine before continuing, "Jasper, thank you for helping me two years ago. I had to leave in a hurry for an emergency and never got the chance to properly thank you."

That night, she hadn’t just been harassed—her drink had been spiked. If Jasper hadn’t stepped in, she probably couldn’t have handled that many thugs on her own. Even if she had managed to take them all down, she would have been injured herself. The consequences were beyond imagination.

It was just that at the time, she hadn’t known who Jasper was or what his motives for helping her were, so she had disappeared.

She had no idea that for the next two years, Jasper would be looking for her.’

"I’m very glad I went to that bar and helped you that night," Jasper said with sincerity.
