On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 20: The Lies Exposed
Their eyes met, and a strange, wonderful feeling filled the air around them.
Jasper suddenly raised his hand and gently caressed the girl’s face. His long fingers sled along her cheek to the back of her head.
Watching his handsome face draw closer, Chloe’s heart suddenly skipped a beat. But just then, an unexpected ringtone shattered the moment.
Jasper Lockwood was lost in words.
"...It’s my phone." Chloe picked up her phone from the table. The screen displayed an unknown number.
’Silas Coldwell again!’
’What does that guy want now!’
"It’s an unknown number. Do you recognize it?" Jasper asked.
Chloe’s brow furrowed slightly. She hung up the phone. "Just a patient. I can ignore it."
"Oh? It’s not some psycho, is it? Calling so late at night."
"..."
Immediately after, the phone rang again. It was the same number.
Chloe gritted her teeth. She hung it up again, and then said, "Let’s go back to the house."
After a two-second pause, Jasper said, "Alright."
The two left the wine cellar.
Meanwhile, at a hotel....
Silas downed a glass of strong liquor in one gulp and smirked. "Hanging up on me! Lynn Chester, just wait and see!"
Just then, a subordinate came over. "Boss, we’ve identified the people who were with Miss Chester. They’re students from the First Medical College of Crestfall."
"Students from the Medical College? Lynn Chester is running around with them now?"
"These three are all top students at the Medical College, and they’re participating in an experimental project in the college’s most classified laboratory."
Silas narrowed his eyes. "So, Lynn is working for the First Medical College now."
"Most likely." After a moment of hesitation, the subordinate added, "Boss, I think Miss Chester is dead set against joining our Nocturne Group. Even setting up a branch for her would be difficult..."
"Bullshit! You think I don’t know that?"
He knew better than anyone how many times that woman had rejected him.
The subordinate didn’t dare make another sound.
Silas said irritably, "Get out."
"Yes, sir."
At the Lockwood Residence...
Chloe returned to her bedroom.
Jasper didn’t go to bed. Instead, he went to the study and summoned Henry.
"You wanted to see me, sir."
Jasper handed him a piece of paper with a phone number written on it and instructed, "Find out who this number belongs to. And don’t let the Madam know."
Henry took the slip of paper and nodded. "Yes, sir. I’ll have someone look into it immediately."
"Go."
Back in the wine cellar, he had noticed Chloe’s expression when she saw the number. It was a mixture of resistance and helplessness. Jasper’s intuition told him it wasn’t just some patient.
Three days later, in the afternoon...
Chloe was walking out of the laboratory building.
When Damian Rivers suddenly came and greeted, "Chloe."
"Hi, Young Master Rivers!"
"Chloe, I came especially to thank you. My grandfather is fine now, and it’s all thanks to you."
"It was Miss Sinclair who saved Old Master Rivers with the spirit pill. You should be thanking her."
"My parents will go to the Sinclair Family to express their gratitude. But I want to thank you. I’ve booked a restaurant. Please, let me treat you to dinner, alright?"
Chloe Sterling bluntly refused, "No thank you."
Damian Rivers: "...I’m the Heir of the Rivers, you know. Can’t you at least give me some face?"
"I don’t accept rewards I haven’t earned."
"But you did earn it! If it weren’t for you, who knows how much more my grandfather would have suffered these past few days."
"It was nothing."
As the two were talking.
Esther approached with another girl from the Medical College.
She saw Chloe standing with a man next to an orange supercar—a clear sign that he was either rich or powerful.
The girl sneered. "Chloe really has a way with men, doesn’t she? She has one after another."
Esther had recently attended a banquet hosted by the Rivers Family, which had boosted her popularity considerably in her circle of third-rate socialites. Many of the girls around her were hoping to ride her coattails.
Looking at the pair, Esther was full of disdain. "She thinks she’s so charming, but she’s nothing more than a plaything."
She had never met Damian Rivers, so she had no idea that the man right in front of her was the very Heir of the Rivers she was so desperate to get close to.
"Exactly! A country bumpkin like her will never make it in high society. She can’t ever compare to you."
Esther’s arrogance had grown. "Don’t even bother comparing her to me."
A flash of awkwardness crossed the girl’s face before she forced a fawning smile. "You’re right, my mistake. She’s not even worthy of being compared to you."
Esther gave a malicious smile. Looking at Chloe Sterling, she asked deliberately, "Got a new boyfriend already? Are you and Young Master Xavier over?"
"Over?" the other girl mocked. "More like Young Master Xavier dumped her!"
"Julian?" Damian Rivers asked. "Is your boyfriend Julian Xavier?"
Chloe’s expression darkened. "No."
"So these two are just talking nonsense?" Damian glanced at Esther and her friend.
The girl said in a snide, passive-aggressive tone, "Well, handsome, she’s hardly going to admit she hooks up with a lot of men right in front of you, is she?"
Hearing this, Chloe shot a sharp, menacing glare at the girl. She didn’t say a word, but the threat was visible.
The girl knew Chloe had fighting skills and, worried she might actually get physical. So she took a wary step back.
A cold glint flashed in Damian’s eyes. He said coolly, "Even if that were true, she deserves all of them, unlike some people who are always ugly and delusional."
The girl’s face turned livid, and she snorted coldly.
Gradually, a crowd started to gather and watch.
Chloe hated this feeling and turned to leave.
Damian blocked her way. "Chloe, get in the car. Let’s go eat."
Chloe frowned. "I already said I’m not going."
Damian resorted to being shameless. "Then I won’t let you leave!"
Chloe’s eyes narrowed. She suddenly grabbed the man’s arm and twisted it behind his back. Damian’s face contorted in pain, but he gritted his teeth and forced himself not to cry out.
The crowd was totally speechless.
Just then, Julian walked over. "Chloe."
When Esther saw Julian arrive, she put on an expression like she was about to enjoy a good show. She was convinced that Chloe was depending on Julian, and if he found out she was hooking up with other men, he would definitely dump her, and maybe even get her kicked out of the Medical College.
She said deliberately, "Young Master Xavier, you’re here! Did you and my sister break up?"
Julian shot her a look and said coldly, "Esther, stop spouting nonsense. Chloe and I are just friends."
Esther froze for a second, and her face showed the embarrassment.
"Chloe, what’s going on?" Julian walked over and looked at the man Chloe had just released, his face a mask of surprise. "Young Master Rivers!"
Damian looked slightly awkward and cleared his throat. "Yeah."
’Young Master Rivers?’
Esther looked at Damian Rivers, shocked and confused. He was one of the Rivers!
’Which Young Master Rivers?’
Chloe glanced at Julian. "It’s nothing. I’m just leaving." With that, she turned and walked away.
Damian rubbed his arm, not daring to stop her again.
Watching his movement, Julian couldn’t help but smile. "Heir of the Rivers, I’d advise you to stay away from Chloe."
Damian put on a proud and defiant look. "I refuse to stay away from her!"
Upon hearing the words ’Heir of the Rivers,’ Esther was petrified.
’This man is actually the Heir of the Rivers! How could he possibly know Chloe!’
The girl next to her got even more shocked. Esther had claimed she’d met the Heir of the Rivers at the banquet, but here he was, and she clearly didn’t recognize him. Obviously, she had been lying about this before.
Feeling the other girl’s gaze on her, Esther knew her lie had been exposed, and her face went from red to white in humiliation.
